Are stovepipe cans the new bomber?

For this thread bomber is a 22oz bottle.

Bombers seem to be on the decline, with more special releases being sold in 4 packs. Recently, i’ve Seen multiple breweries, Modern Times specifically, doing special releases in stovepipe cans.

MT released Double Dry Hopped Booming Rollers, which I thought would be great and wanted to buy. However, i’ve Only seen it in stovepipes for $4-$5. How is this different than bombers? Today on their IG they announced another stovepipe only release.

Are breweries now just switching from bombers to stovepipe cans? Does the beer industry prefer cans over bottles so much that people are more willing to buy stovepipe cans but not bombers? Is the a newness to stovepipes that people like?

Personally, I rarely buy bombers because the costs per oz is so high. I’d rather just pay a few more dollars and get 2/3 more beer. Especially for beers like pale ales, ipas, stouts etc. I do buy large format bottles for beers such as BA stouts, barleywines etc. but I would always prefer to pay a little more up front for more beer at a much better price per ounce.

I love finding new stovetops from Upslope. I don't know if they ever did bombers but I don't really care if they did.

Why do you live finding new stovepipe cans? Not being snarky just curious.

If by "stovepipes the new 22s" you mean that they're pointless, goofy, and annoying, and that they should go away promptly, then yes, I agree.

I didn't think I could hate a format more than I hate 22's, but, along came stovepipes......

Singles, that I can drink and form an opinion on during 19.2 ounces of beers in my preferable packaging. Shrugs.

The specific example you cited seems like a weird one, I think the two cans of DDH Booming Rollers were 5$ a piece. That's like 26c an oz which works out to about 4.20 for a 16 oz can. Not a crazy good deal, but also not out of line with their typical stuff, which I see for about 4$ a 16oz can.

In general I don't mind the format, and I never minded 22 oz bottles either (other than the cases where the same beer was available in a different format for significantly cheaper/oz)

I know pony bottles aren’t economical, but I mean...I wish the trend was sizing downward for a lower price. Stovepipes are never convenient. Ponies, however, are as convenient as can be!

I hardly ever see them. So I'm going to say no. Clearly just a flash in the pan.

This may not fit DDH or Modern Times beers, but stovepipe cans are very impactful for larger breweries according to what Revolution’s Doug Velicky has said. The entry into convenience stores, train stations, etc is significant to a brewery.

What’s weird about that MT example? $4.20 for a 16 oz = $16+ for a 4 pack. Generally their 4 packs are $10.99 to $12.99. Either way it’s a way for the brewery to charge a premium just because it’s in a large format can.

If it’s an alternative package option I can see the value but when breweries release stovepipe cans only, just like special release bombers only then I think it’s just a way for the brewery to sell said beer for a premium.

I am good with bombers if it’s also sold in smaller format. Then the consumer has the option. I am just not a fan of the larger format only releases.

Funny that you mention that, as there's an article in the latest issue of The New brewer (the house organ for the brewers association) on the rising popularity of 8oz cans in the "lifestyle" category. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I also haven't seen any in the wild.

For those times when 12 or 16 ounces just isn't enough, but 22, 24 or 32 ounces are too much. I like the concept although I've not bought any yet.

I agree it’s a stupidly useless format, better for Tall Boys.

I'm all for more options other than 12 oz and 16 oz beers. I actually like the stovepipes for higher abv stuff worth splitting. 22 oz bombers are good too, but I like the variety.

I guess if it was just one of their regular shelf beers for the increased price, but to me seeing a specialty beer from them for about 1$ more than regular (per 16 oz can) seems pretty reasonable.
Honestly most of the 19.2oz cans I see are stuff like GF blonde ale and Da Shootz from deschutes and All Day from founders and they are like 1.99 - 2.19 for the stovepipe. So my experience of it has been more like a large format value brand package
