Good evening, NBS. Back with one I wanted to get to a couple weeks ago, but it just kept slipping to the next week. Fixing that now, as I am almost done with Oakspire, by New Belgium.

The description of the beer indicates it was "aged with bourbon-steeped oak spirals and char from inside the barrel" - which seems to indicate it wasn't ever actually in bourbon barrels. Based on the taste, I could see that. The bourbon notes seemed more directly from the liquor than coaxed out of the barrel wood. This can lead to too sharp a bite, but that is not the case here.

In my review, I note the bourbon and its char (however that was introduced) brought some smoke tot he nose and some spice to the taste. The beer was restrained in many aspects, and perhaps a bit too much so on the base beer. It didn't seem to bring too much to the party. Perhaps this was all in the plan to build a light "strong ale" with a focus on showcasing the bourbon on a more blank beer canvas.

I didn't dislike the beer and did like the bourbon notes, but I sort of missed having a bit more influence from the beer's components - malt or hop. I can see why other reviewers have rated this one pretty low, but I think it has its good and bad points which total up to an average beer.

New Beer Sunday: English Strong Ale

Evenin’ NBSers. Time for a report on a new sipping beer.

This evening’s new beer is from The Lost Abbey and is called “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

Since this is a beer for sipping my review will be subject to revision for a while, but the current version can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/18149/72285/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are heavy on the bourbon, but also show a background of dark fruit and dark caramel malt along with some bits of peach and of tea even further in the background. While there’s just a bit of alcohol burn it’s not really unpleasant. A fairly enjoyable and interesting beer that is complex, sippable and would be great on a cold evening before the fire. That all said, I’ll probably not be looking to try it again, but caveat is that’s basically because the last few years I find myself being less and less interested in repeating such high ABV beers.

Some of the Music on the Player tonight seems to fit nicely with at least the name of tonight’s new beer, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

    Cheers, all!

    De Dolle Brouwers - Oeral

Continuing with the B United cans is this one from De Dolle Brouwers. With their tendency to produce very highly carbonated beer... or even gushers (and given people's tendencies to age their beers), this brewery doesn't feel a natural fit for the tanker-to-canning line project, but they went with the smallest beer in the lineup. At 5.8% ABV, it's even slightly smaller than the BeerAdvocate listing of it at 6%. I was surprised when I realized I never had this one before... at least I think I haven't.

It's awesome. If there even is a line that divides saisons and more generic Belgian pale beers, it's certainly blurrier than people might think. I think the term "saison" is overprescribed anyway. Having said all that, this beer falls nicely into beer geeks idea of a saison even if the brewer doesn't think of it as such (or beer websites like this one for that matter - it's classified as a BPA here). It pours with a great big head. It's light amber. It starts sweet and finishes dry. There's a very high level of spiciness from the yeast and a nice hop bitterness... neither of which interfere in the drinking process. This beer has no trouble disappearing from the glass. Argh, I want more.

I've got one more new brew for the evening, and I'm keeping the ABV upward trajectory going with this one.

Prairie / Cigar City Let's Get This Done 12% imperial stout with vanilla and Brigaderios

This was a brand new beer for me - not just in NBS terms, but as in, when I saw it, I'd never heard of it. Surprisingly, I'm also the first review! 0.0% rDev here I come!!! :grinning:

Bottom line up front: I don't quite get the gimmick, perhaps, but this is a delicious pastry stout, replete with deep, smooth tones from the stout, and vanilla, cinnamon, and dough from the additives. Thick but not chewy, sticky with no burn. Overall: sweet, dark, delectable, and delicious.

We (Mrs Lizard and I) quit attending a couple of years ago - it keeps getting bigger and attracting more and more people - I feel it has lost a lot of the family orientation and local feel - no table cloths, metal detectors, what's next - body cavity searches? If you haven't tried 5 Stones yet, you should probably check them out

Happy New Back to the Beer Future Sunday, Part 5, Mission II (Week 763)!
It has been quite a productive day despite a late start on my part. I CANtinued with a marginal beer (but the brewery calls it an "Ale" so I feel justified):

CANundrum: CANtinue or CANurtail events until next Sunday? My six (6) (!) remainders are a) too much for me at this point & b) they will make more sense next week as they also lend themselves to a segue into an all-new brewery horizontal! I am going with the latter & pulling the plug for this week.

If Doc @lordofthewiens starts us off at MIdnight (EDT) next week, I will have ample time to run through this next one. See yinz then, with more … stuff!

Very strange; that quote linked to my post, but I'm fairly certain it was not me who actually posted it! Strange things are afoot. I think perhaps I should have another beer. :grinning:

    Wild Leap -- Rockweave

    3.49/5 rDev -15.7%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.5

Dirty golden yellow body; frothy, sudsy head; clinging sheets of foam inside the glass. Muddled smell combination of dull cereal grains and old citrus pith; caramel. The taste blends elements of citrus rind, powder sugar, caramel, alcohol, and some vinous hop bitterness. Medium body; residual sugar presence but some ethanol burn on the palate; a bit sweet with a tart juiciness but also a noticeable boozy dryness.

Well, it has a dirty haziness and some old citrus smell and taste elements, but the entirety just falls into a muddled blop of a beer. Overly sweet, not enough fresh juiciness or memorable hop character.
    ----
I must be turning into a crotchety old man beer swiller. This is another in a number of recent beers (mostly hazy/NE IPAs that I just find to be jumbled messes. Perhaps my pea-brain is calcifying against new beer flavors and textures (and trends). Perhaps the beers actually are pretty mediocre. Most likely, it's a combination of the two possibilities. I'm inclined to think I'm in the gray zone of appreciating these beers. Well, I calls 'em as I sees 'em...

Hello again late night (Thought It Was A) New Beer Sunday. This $9 bottle was purchased off the new beer shelf at my weekly stop a couple weeks ago. I didn't notice until tonight it's a "vintage" 2018. I've never caught this shop pulling these shenanigans before, so I'm assuming distributer. On to the beer...
    The review:
500mL bottle VINTAGE 2018 (1 year old) poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at fridge temp 8.6% ABV. The beer pours dense very dark brown with some medium brown highlights and mocha colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island leaving behind some lacing. The aroma is pumpkin pie and little else. The taste is mostly pumpkin and pie spice with just a little roasted malt thrown in. The finish is mostly dry with medium bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and adequately carbonated with just a bit less than medium. No alcohol presence in the aroma or taste. Overall, ok. More pumpkin pie beer than stout with pumpkin added. I would be interested to try it fresh but wouldn't pay this price again.

The Mrs. is in bed and kids are wrapping up homework, so I finally have time and quiet to answer @cjgiant's opening question. I was not able to attend any Oktoberfest type celebrations this year. It is something I look forward to in a short three years when we will go from having two active high schoolers to an empty nest. I've read both Nashville and Cincinnati have great ones. I am, however, extremely seasonal in my beer drinking. Oktoberfests in August & September. Fresh hops in October. Stouts, big Belgians & barleywines from November to January. Then I tend to get a bit eclectic until summer where plain old lagers and cream ales interplay with IPAs. I'll always make an exception for a fresh or desirable find anywhere in the calendar, if the mood strikes.

That's it for me today. I think I'm going to put a splash of Bulleit Rye in this glass and take it over to WBAYDN. We are hosting and feeding 26 high school soccer players (my son's entire varsity team) tomorrow night for their Sectional dinner. I need a little rest before then. Cheers all!

    Dutchess Ales - Ghost Beer

This is a weird one. Little Dutchess Ales started out by producing cask bitter out of a desire to fill the void of traditional cask bitter in my area... and they did their part to trickle in a tiny amount of their niche product to the few places that would have it. It was certainly unexpected to see a canned beer from them. This beer was brewed at Great South Bay - a place that seems to be growing as the craft brewers' contract brewer of choice just outside of New York City. Here's a description of the beer from another site:

I didn't read that description before having the beer, and I really did not know what to expect with this one. The murky appearance of this beer was a disappointing surprise/non-surprise. Tastes of mild apricot (in odd synergy with the description above), and possesses a herbal hop quality. The beer is 4.8% ABV and feels like it. It's nothing like a NEIPA despite the appearance. It's far more mild and more herbal than fruity. The entire experience was quite unique. It's in a class of it's own rather than being of a style, and I'm not sure there's really an audience for it. I enjoyed it.

Woodstock Brewing - Look Inside Kolsch

Gonna cut to the chase - I hate this beer. There’s an oakiness that demolishes anything else present. This wasn’t the right kind of beer for this. They don’t even mention the oak on the label.
