My dad and I used to drink a lot of good German beers like DAB and Dinkelacker, but on a whim I picked up a 6 pack of Hoegaarden and damn this stuff is blowing me away!

Do Belgians brew anything else worth trying? Tips appreciated.

    Cheers!

Too many to begin to try and name. In the menu at the top of the page click on beers. Then click on beer styles. Lots of different styles and lists of Belgian and Belgian styles....

You can go to any good beer store, find the Belgian section, and fill your cart. Most of the beers now in your cart will be those mentioned above. If it's worth the expense of shipping it to the US, it's going to be a good beer.

But don't ignore the American breweries in the Top Belgian list because some very good Belgian-style beers are brewed locally. They just haven't been around long enough to be classics yet. And Belgian hybrids are pretty good too. I think I've liked every Belgian-inspired IPA that I've ever had.

Ommegang from NY makes great Belgian beers. Also, the same can be said for Unibroue from Canada.

Let's take a breath for a minute here guys. The OP mentioned Hoegaarden, by which I assume he means White (with citrus/corriander) - pretty much all the beers listed above are fantastic, but very few are in the same flavor category.

OP, are you asking specifically for beers similar in style, or Belgians in general? I love so many of the beers listed in this thread - there are stouts, lambics, dubbels/tripels/quads, etc. They all have their own characteristics. If you work your way through these suggestions you'll find excellent examples of any.

It's funny that ~15+ years ago almost all this site talked about was belgian-style beers and IPAs and today we get this question. No offense intended, of course. It's just interesting how things change.

Do you think that 15 years from now "IPAs" will still be a beer style commonly discussed?

    Cheers!

I assume Hoegaarden is the best one reading through the forums and I love it too! I really want to know are there any Belgians that are like the German beers my dad and I are into?

Yes, Hoegaarden is the best. Don't even bother with the other Belgians; none will come close.

What kind of German beers are you into?

Hoegaarden is a Belgian Witbier, and it self-declares as the original Belgian Witbier.

But, according to the ratings on this site, it is not the best Belgian Witbier (let alone the best Belgian beer). It is ranked at #51 for the style. The best of the style (according to the ratings on this site) is White from Allagash Brewing Company (Maine), with the 2nd best being Wit from Brouwerij St. Bernardus NV (Belgium).
