Hennepin is a saison, not a witbier.

You like a very accessable Belgian witbier?

Here's a list of Tripels and Quads that are $12 a bottle.

In my experience it is difficult to compare Belgian beers to German beers. There are similar styles, but the Belgian beers give off different aromas as well as the tastes caused by the Belgian yeast strains.

You're question is "Do Belgians brew anything else worth trying?"

To be clear, Belgians are a nationality from the country of Belgium.
"Belgians" do not brew Hoegaarden, and have not for a while, it is an InBev product that is indeed made in Belgium but let's not call it a Belgian. Because it bastardizes the whole thing.

If you like the style of beer that Hoegaarden, a Belgian White, a once renowned and excellent brand that literally saved the style then yes, Allagash White is your best bet. If you are referring to any beer brewed in Belgium, by Belgians, be aware that there are hundreds and hundreds of interesting brews to explore.

This question is dangerously close to trolling.

If you like Hoegaarden, you will probably enjoy Allagash White.

If you want to go German, you may want to try a good Hefeweizen. Both wheat beers, but distinctive of the country they originated in.

Generally speaking, I think Belgium and Germany both excel in different styles of beer. So rather then looking for a German style Belgian beer, why not just go straight to Germany for styles that Germany excels at and enjoy the different styles that Belgium has to offer?

Since it's still brewed in Hoegaarden - which you acknowledged in your edit(?), it seems like you're being a bit too extreme with your distinction and judgement.
I'm not so sure about it saving the style. Before Celis, witbier was more like a lambic.

Yep. Agreed. Technically it is a Belgian. But in spirit, hardly. A very good marketing strategy though. In my judgement Hoegaarden is worse than even a domestic light adjunct lager. ABI dumbed it down to the point it is hardly recognizable, but they can advertise it's greatest quality, brewed since forever in Hoegaarden!

Before MJ defined it as a "style" it was, as were all other styles, simply a beer from a particular place. Celis bought the brewery in '66, which is over a decade before "Belgian White" was a named style, or any beer was defined by style. And well after the beer we call Belgian White was being brewed. And when the last white beer brewery in the town of Hoegaarden closed, it was Celis that bought the brewery and continued to make the beer.

So, Pierre Celis did indeed save the style known as Belgian White.

    Cheers

also, need to mention Shock Top!

Are you saying it used to be better? Should I try to pickup older bottles?

Gotta disagree with Duvel. They cut Double Jack and Wookey Jack when they bought Firestone. Therefore everything they touch is tainted. With all due respect, fuck Duvel.

This site's ratings have an American bias, but there is no doubt that Allagash White is very good.

Disagree. All the new stuff they have been coming out with (e.g., the luponic distortion series, etc.) more than makes up for those old things. Plus Duvel is a great beer for drinking and they resurrected Goudenband.
