Since you asked the question...it's human nature of love, inclusion, and being in control etc.... Some of us at some instance want friend or family to enjoy what we experience. ie. There's only so many sunsets we enjoy alone before we want someone to share it with. The same with good beer. Better to ask than not at all. Besides, this thead is in keeping my interest in the craft beer realm.

Most recently-cantillon st-lamvinus. That was rough. A couple months ago, I offered a member of my extended family a torpedo. He took a few sips, proclaimed "I love it!" Two hours later, I saw it sitting, half full, by the sink.

Well, speakink for my own experience, my dad likes craft beer. He readily buys Bud Light, but at the same time he likes a good IPA and and has really enjoyed OskarBlues' line up of late. So, when he rejected the Breakfast Stout it definitely threw me off. The opposite holds true with my wife. She's not a beer hound. So, when I offer her something and she does like it, I'm pleasently surprised.

why do you keep trying to "convert" her to something she just doesn't like? I can't stand most American IPA/DIPA/IIPAs, but I love stouts, RISsen, porters, Baltic porters, Belgians, etc. Just let your wife enjoy her malty beers, which leaves more hop bombs for you!

It wasn't easy finishing the rest of the 22oz bottle when my friend only took 2 sips, but it had to be done.

    I
    Well said sir

I'm not sure why i still find it suprising when i let friends/family try a favorite craft beer of mine, only to receive a disgusted face. I would have the same reaction if a wine drinker handed me their favorite vintage or w/e. For me it was a gradual process from drinking King Cobra 40's to craft beer, so i guess i can't expect others to just wake up one day and enjoy craft as much as i do.

Worst experience of this happening, dollar wise - drainpour by friends of their shares of a bottle of tactical Nuclear Penguin - literally 50$ worth of beer down the drain.

Worst offender by a craft fan - my buddy who is moderately into craft rejected my offer to share a bottle of Black Tuesday after I already opened it. I had to drink the whole thing alone.

One that hurt the most - I tracked down one of the 6 bottles of Cantillon Gueze that has come to my area in the last 6 months, and shared it with two friends. Both griped at the "foul" taste, wouldn't take a full glass.

I brought Cigar City Good Gourd to a Halloween party and no one wanted to drink it because it the beer had "too much alcohol" (it's 8.5% ABV). Muled from Florida on my last trip.

Meanwhile, they had no problems drinking Malibu and cola.

    Fuckin' heathens.

I know I'm probably going to come off as the bad guy here but in spite of that I'd like to echo the "Why are we having this conversation?" sentiment. Almost every post in this thread describes the act of giving some of the most extreme examples of a particular style of beer to someone who doesn't normally drink a lot of craft beer, or beer at all for that matter. So I have to ask, what exactly did any of you think was going to happen?

Yes, we know that these beers are good, but a lot of us also came to like the over time after trying less intense varieties and developing our own personal taste preferences. Several beers mentioned in this thread are amongst the most polarizing beers even as far as craft drinkers are concerned.

I hate to say it, but it's this kind of thinking that makes people view craft beer drinkers as pretentious. The same can be said for wine drinkers, foodies, or any other demographic subset. I feel that it's a very poor attitude to hold and can only be damaging to something like craft beer which we as beer drinkers (I hope) would want to expand beyond its existing followers. People like what they like and that's it.

I'm not saying don't share the beers you like with people who don't normally drink craft. I offer people tastes of whatever I'm drinking more often than not. But, maybe you should take into consideration what you intend to share and think about whether or not the person is actually likely to enjoy it. Otherwise, please get off your high horses and quit being offended or crestfallen when these people decline or end up disliking the DIPA/Sour/gigantic RIS/etc.. because it's going to happen sooner or later.

High horse? Wtf is this dude talking about? I don't have friends/family try a beer in hopes of them hating it and some how making me feel "cooler" or "more refined". It's usually because i think a beer is glorious and i ask them to try it in hopes, their face will light up and enjoy it as much as i do. Also, when i'm reviewing a beer and i can't quite figure out what "that" flavor is. I find someone that doesn't drink craft and doesn't think too much of what the ingredients are or what brewer made it. Give a straight forward, non bias account of what they're tasting, whether they like it or not.

Did your worthless post REALLY have to be 4 paragraphs long? We get it, your needy and you think your better then us because you drink your beer in a dark corner by yourself and offer some to no one. Geez get off your high horse and share a brew with someone...

Excuse me, i'm about to go force feed my brother some Enjoy by IPA. Hopefully he hates it.

I think what many people are doing is commiserating over the perceived waste of quality beer. It's totally understandable that people don't want or like extreme examples of beer, or cannot appreciate their rarity, etc. What these posts are about is collectively sharing that internal groan when you see someone abusing an amazing example of the medium. In sharing our stories we remind ourselves of both the isolation sometimes felt by our fixation and the camaraderie found on this site with regards to craft beer (to link this back up to the touchy-feely feel good spirit of the holidays :stuck_out_tongue:)

My point exactly. If someone gave me a glass of wine and said "It's a vintage from '86, it cost me $1000 and i've been searching for it for years!" It would still taste like shit to me, though i would force myself to finish the glass and never drain poor something that someone finds so precious.

Maybe, but I don't care what other people drink, nor does it bother me if they don't like what I like. We can still be friends.

It would be similar to someone trying to get me to like watching or playing soccer just because they do. Sorry, it ain't gonna happen. And since I know my own attitudes in such circumstances, I understand theirs also. I've got good friends I can enjoy good beer with. I don 't need everyone I know to like craft beer too.

I actually enjoy getting shot down. Just more good beer for me. There are even some beers I won't even offer to share. Damn my greed!
