I'd be down with scotch ale/wee heavy. Happen to have a barrel-aged bomber of one on hand.

My thought process there is that there may not be a ton of examples of each of those available to people, so by making it a bit broader, it might make it easier on people. But, Im fine with whatever.
    For sure.

For a date, I suggest Saturday, Nov 30. Thanksgiving weekend in the USA, but a couple of days after the big family meal, and a day after "Black Friday" (if that is even still a thing with every store pushing it earlier and earlier...).

I think Nov. 30 is a great suggestion...and I’m in for whatever style(s)...marking a hold on the calendar!

Since this pic was my afternoon, I was chanting "Weizen Doppelbock" when I started reading @FBarber 's post, and then as if by magic:

I've never seen anything from Brauhaus Riegele in these parts. Where'd you find that, Total Wine?

It's available on the Island. Maybe Total Wine has it. I got that particular bottle at Half Time. I can tell that every Augustus I've had recently has been old. Wouldn't be terribly surprised if those bottles even date back to the first Sierra Nevada Ofest collaboration. Privat is the easiest to find and I've had some this year that tasted good. If you ever see their Pilsner let me know... I had that once and I'd kill for more.

The end of November sounds great, as I'm still doing Sober Octember until the middle of the month. When it comes to styles, my vote goes to either American/English Strong Ale or Doppelbock, which both seem like great fits for the season.

Weizenbock would be just fine too. Amazingly I haven't had one of those in almost 5 years!

Well, since Founders Backwoods showed up in town, I'd be up for that.

Wee Heavies are really only BB.

Any imported German effort in. OST any style is probably a year old or more on the shelves here. Probably true on most styles. Whether that’s still representative in beyond me, but I’d suspect not. Regionality might really come into play here as to who can participate.

Availability can be an issue as I badly mis spelled above, so a style choice could be unfairly dependent upon where you live. So participation might be localized into pockets, and absent in others. If it’s a Wee Heavy maybe 2 off the top of my head here. Most German beers that are not seasonal might be well over a year old here, they’re not popular.

Could a broader brew work? It’s Oct how about a Winter Brew, it’s around the corner for most, and something seasonal is available most everywhere in one form or another. Lots of big boys, but quite a few regional and smaller breweries also brew a seasonal, in many styles. Could be an ipa, could be an ale brewed with spruce tips etc. If it’s a seasonal even imports are more likely to be fresh and relevant. So a winter brew not a fall beer, no pumpkin beers. Just a thought.

The date sounds great. I'd suggest we taste German Hefeweizens. Ayinger, Franziskaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Paulaner, and Weihenstephaner seem to be everywhere, and they're delicious!

Online tastings have varied in theme, from specific beer, to specific style, somewhat broader style, to broad category (e.g. Beers You Inexplicably Haven't Had).

I like the ones that "make" me explore a style that either I have not had before, or that it's been a long time. Hunting down a couple or 3 is part of the fun, but I need enough advance notice, especially for relatively specialized European styles. Even better if I can find a local (or at least, midwest) brewer who brews the style and puts it into distribution.

However, I'm game for just about anything.

Hefes are a seasonal for our local brewers. Spring to early summer.

Any of these work and November 30th sounds like a good time. Somebody call it so we can all start shopping. I'm in regardless.

    Alright, November 30th it is.

I am leaning towards weizenbock & doppelbock. I am well aware of the range, but my concern is that if I just did weizenbock, people might have a hard time tracking down examples, so including doppelbocks opens that up a bit. Both are great styles for the cooler weather.

If anyone strongly objects let me know - I won't set up the tasting thread until a bit closer to Nov.
