I've rated 21 rye beers. I really like German Roggenbier especially when it is fresh. American versions range from OK to great.

But rye beers normally do not use caraway seeds, only the malt made from the rye grain. There may be a specialty beer that uses caraway seeds along with the rye malt, such as a beer that mimics a corned beer on rye sandwich (if there is such a thing).

Was in Denver this weekend and had the Sazerac from Upslope - really good beer but one of the few rye beers I've had.

I've never had a rye beer that says it used caraway seeds. Spicy/peppery might not be the best term but it seems that rye has a sharper grain flavor, I definitely register it as spice and similar to peppercorns

Just rated Pretoria Fields Rye Charles IPA. I would love to hear from some else that had tried this. It was interesting to me because I don't care much for aggressively bittered IPAs (West Coast). And that made it a challenge for me to review and rate. I am sure people who like those styles would really like this. The hop aroma profile is more subtle stonefruit vs citrus. Just as a lot of the discussion points on this thread; the rye added some subtle spice and a slickness to the mouth-feel. It also finishes well on the dry side. This particular brewery is in Albany, GA (south GA) and they grow their own barley and rye for the hrain bill. The beer btw is named in homage to Albany born Ray Charles.

I agree on pepper but I wouldn't know what to call the note if not spicy. It's an herby kind of spice, doesn't specifically bring caraway to mind for me (although mmm I could go for some rye bread). Rye is a small part of the landscape here in Belgium because the subtle complexity and the extra touch of body load fit well with the national beer character. Struise makes several, for those who see their stuff stateside. Locally, Dochter van de Korenaar makes a nice triple with it. Haacht makes a saison with it that shows up in some run-of-the-mill bars. I'm sure there are more, memory evading me at the moment. If you find yourself in Ireland, seek out a Kinnegar Rustbucket.

This reminds me how much I miss Ruthless Rye IPA. I haven't seen it around in a couple years.

Hmm, don't recall seeing that one. But I remember getting a 6 pack for $10.99 and needing more of that in my life. If I could get a sixer of that beer again I'd be very, very happy.
