My only objection to doppelbock (as much as I love them) is that an online tasting for the style was done here as recently as Feb. 2017. With so many styles to choose from it seems a bit soon to be repeating one.

    Thats 2.5 years ago!

Edit: Ok, if not a dopplebock - what about dunkelweizen?

Would definitely be harder to track down than dopplebock though. :grimacing:

Perhaps, but not if it involves driving >20 miles one way to procure one beer, which right now it looks like it would.

Many times these online tastings emphasize less than common beer styles, so procurement does become part of the deal.

I'll drive ~20 miles round trip for a couple of different weizenbock beers .... not as bad as 40 miles, for sure, but not my corner liquor store, either.

But, it does need to strike a balance to accommodate people who want to join in.

    Do you have another suggestion?

Well, my first choice was scotch ale/wee heavy. I could get several of those close to home or work.

    Dunkelweizendoppelbock? Doppelweizendunkelbock?

IOW, any beer where the style name starts with "German" and contains "dunkel", weizen", "doppel", or "bock"!

For Weizenbock, I’d be really surprised if you couldn’t get a big bottle or a sixer of Vitus by you.

I'm up for just about anything, so don't go by me, but if we do go with weizenbock, I can choose from among the #1, #2, and #4 rated for the style on this site, plus a USA-brewed weizenbock... although the USA one is officially retired, so it may be pretty old on the shelf... I haven't checked it out yet... waiting on an official call! :sunglasses:

Vitus, sure. But I was referring to Dunkelweizens (see posts #323, #324 & #326). Of those, Weihenstephaner is the only one I can be sure of obtaining easily. How old it would be is another matter.

If we go with dunkelweizens, I'll be sure to pick up some Shiner Holiday Cheer!

These shares always end up at times that are inconvenient for me, so I have little desire to try to force a hand, but:

What about including the 5 styles @FBarber first listed? Those with only wee heavy/scotch ales should be able to find 2-4 around. Those that want to find the more obscure German styles can find those. If people want to sample 3 different beers on that day, then they may be able to cross styles.

If you go down to only the obscure, it’s going to be a lot of the same. And if you go all the way up to scotch/wee, it’s going to be the same national/regional, and then some super obscure locals. Some of the locals may not be crazy obscure, which makes it more fun (in my eyes).

The tasting goes all day, so feel free to post (if you can) at whatever time you can.
I would prefer to keep it somewhat narrowed to keep the discussion focused. IN the past, if the tasting wasn't focused enough, we've had the thread get merged with WBAYDN since it wasn't a "specific tasting".
Yea, there will be lots of overlap, but thats ok - its a tasting so its honestly nicer to have everyone able to discuss some of the same beers.
