Fortunately, there's not a lot going on around the Lloyd Center, so it shouldn't really matter. :sunglasses:

My office is over at the Lloyd Center, and safety-wise, I think it's pretty comparable to a lot of the downtown areas. There are problems with derelicts and homeless types, but they're easy to avoid and don't cause any safety issues (maybe some sanitary issues).

Otherwise, I completely recommend Larry's recommendations, and would throw in Wayfinder as a recommendation as well (which is just a few blocks from the HOTD tasting room). Would also recommend Lardo/Beer O'clock if the you're staying over on the west side @JMecc

Everything @NWer @John_M said is correct. I live in the Pearl and you can walk around at all hours of the night and it's perfectly safe. About the only area I'd say to avoid at night is Old Town, and that's primarily because the concentration of homeless people is highest there. Basically if you don't engage with anyone who appears to be high or crazy, you won't have any problems.

Generally the east side of the river is going to be more residential (except the Lloyd Center, that area doesn't feel very "Portland") and the west side will be more urban. Downtown is a perfectly reasonable place to stay. You can walk to any of the breweries in the Pearl or the central eastside pretty easily, or take public transit / bikes / scooters to practically anywhere.

The Old Town area is probably the only part of town I might recommend that someone from out of town avoid. My wife and I drive through there to get home every day from work, and it's by far the most unpleasant part of the drive. The area smells bad and just looks rundown (there's junk piled everywhere), and there's in ordinate number of meth heads roaming the streets, talking to themselves on the side walk, or screaming off into space. It's unpleasant, but even so, I think it's still a fairly safe part of town to walk around.

Perfect; thanks all! I picked Pearl district to be central for walking.

For those interested in such things, beermongers just put out some bottles of spice wars, along with regular kds and bbomb.

Any chance BA Fremont will be floating around at the end of the month? Will be out there for Zwanze Day. Thanks.

Hard to predict, but I'd say yes. Beermongers seemed to have a pretty good supply the other day. It doesn't seem as if there's a huge pent up demand for these beers, so there's probably a good chance that they'll still have some left by then.

Everything I've had from little beast is delightful. Their fruited beers are well balanced, not too tart or acidic and not overly fruity; however as the kids say...are juicy bangers.

Mrs. vurt and I will check 'em out soon. BG Food Cartel is a 10-minute MAX ride away, and we're big fans of the place. (Especially the Speakeasy, where they always seem to have pFriem and Barley Brown's on tap.)

Hey everyone. Quick question. Have an Oregon trip coming up. Have most of Portland planned out already but trying to add 1 more spot. Leaning towards Ruse or Little Beast. I know they're completely different breweries. But your thoughts would be helpful. Cheers, have a good night.

Hi, I've never been to Portland, but I'll be coming on a brewery journey in a few months. Please weigh in on what I've been developing, conceptually. I'm under the impression this is an aggressive itinerary, and I'm interested in breweries only, not beer bars. My intention is to grab flights and move on.

    Day 1:

    Cider Riot!
    Mt Tabor
    Base Camp
    Cascade
    Rogue Eastside Pub
    Modern Times
    Hair of the Dog
    Lucky Labrador Brew Pub
    Ground Breaker
    Baerlic
    Grixsen

    Day 2:

    Hopworks N Williams Pub
    Lompoc
    Stormbreaker
    Ecliptic Brewing
    The Widmer Brothers Brewery
    Ex Novo Brewing Co
    Upright Brewing
    Culmination Brewing
    Breakside Brewery
    Great Notion Brewing NW

    Day 3:

    Deschutes
    Backwoods Brewing
    Rogue Pearl
    10 Barrel Brewing
    Back Pedal Brewing
    Von Ebert Brewing
    Avid Cider
    Rock Bottom

That does seem a bit assertive. BTW, Lompoc is closing this coming Tuesday.

Aggressive is putting it mildly. Though, if you travel at light speed, time will slow down sufficiently to allow you to enjoy all these spots.

Jokes apart - what are you hoping to achieve (if that even is the right word) with this itinerary? Is it to try as much as possible from as many spots are possible or to get a feel for the brewery scene over here? If the latter, here are my recommendations:
    Old guard/institutions
    Deschutes
    Rogue
    For those that like beer
    Upright
    Hair of the dog
    New school with national hype
    Great Notion
    Modern Times
Decidedly local institutions that punch well above their weight
    Breakside
    Culmination
    Ex Novo
    Little Beast
    Ruse

With the list above, you should get every style of brewery - large, bright and airy, dark and (somewhat dingy), intimate, raucous, twee, comforting, sterile and everything in between.

A bit of both. I care most about drinking the local product, and with only a few days time, want to really make the most of it.
