I’m hoping to get some advice on a few places to stop off at while driving from Buffalo to Brooklyn at the end of the month. I’m planning to go as directly as possible, so am not looking to make long detours, but an extra 20 or 30 minutes off a direct route is fine. As I will be driving, I’m looking more for beer to go.

Also, if you had a full day in Brooklyn to visit a few breweries and bars, which ones would you recommend I visit?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Not sure of your exact route, but an alternate version via google maps that is 10 minutes longer than the default route takes you right past Equilibrium (tho i believe their releases are Sat and a fairly serious time investment), Rushing Duck and then Industrial arts and district 96 not terribly out of the way.

There's a ton of other spots in the Hudson Valley like Suarez, Hudson Valley brewery etc. if you are willing to make more of a detour and come down the other side of the river.

In Brooklyn, Other Half and Grimm tho in my opinion OH is above them all. I'm sure others can give you more specifics on Brooklyn.

Yeah, I’d definitely stop by Suarez on your way south. Plan Bee Farm Brewery, too, especially if you like wild ales.

    Thanks for the response.

I’m actually planning to end the day’s drive on Friday at Equilibrium where I am meeting up with friends coming down from Montreal. We are planning to stay the night in the area and then head into Brooklyn in the AM. I’ll look into the others you mention in the area. Of the three, I’m o my familiar with Industrial Arts and quite like what I’ve had from them. Thanks.

I’m seriously considering a detour to Suarez, likely on the way back though. . I love their beer. I’m coming from Toronto, and without stops, that detour makes it about and 8 hour drive to Equilibrium. I might try to convince my friends coming down from Montreal to stop there on their way down to pick some stuff up for me, though I would like to visit myself.

Other Half and Grimm are at the top of my list for Brooklyn for sure.

    Thanks

Plan Bee is another one I’d like to add to the itinerary but am worried about the added time to the long drive. I’ve never had anything by them and have wanted to try for a long time. Is their beer available at shops in New York State?

    Thanks.

Yeah, you can get them at good bottle shops in the region. We get them here in New Jersey and I’ve seen them when I’m up in Massachusetts as well.

That being said, it all depends on your itinerary. If you go to Suarez you could take the Taconic southbound and hit Plan Bee on the way, I think it’s only like ~15 mins off the exit, iirc. It’s a really beautiful little brewery, well worth a visit but if you’re in a rush I’d say just skip it get bottles at a store.

You can get most of Industrial Arts cans at DeCicco’s (grocery with incredible selection). I recommend hitting up Suarez if it’s between the two.

Woodland Farm Brewing in Marcy (outside of Utica). It's literally 5-6 minutes off the Thruway and, for my money, the most underrated brewery in the state. After that you can jump right off 90 in Guilderland to go to Westmere Beverage, which is the best beer store in New York. You'll for sure be able to find Plan Bee bottles there, and also cans from myriad awesome breweries.

On your way down 87, Arrowood Farms Brewing's outpost is 4-5 minutes off the highway right in New Paltz. It's an extremely cool spot and they make killer beer. Bacchus is also a quick walk from there with great beer and solid food.

i totally agree, had a good time at plan bee the time I visited and they had a lot more bottles and options then you will generally find in the store (not a surprise by going to the source). I'd vote for them and Suarez, if you head up that way but it depends on what your fave styles are.

Also know Industrial Arts has another location in Beacon if you decide to hit Hudson Valley Brewery, tho like others mentioned you can grab IA cans around at shops.

    Thanks for all the info.

Follow up question: will cans to go likely be available at Equilibrium, Hudson Valley and Suarez on a Friday in the late afternoon or evening?

Equilibrium maybe, HV definitely not unless they're doing a Friday release, Suarez probably. If no cans, Suarez will 100% have bottles, though, which you should be grabbing anyhow.
