Welp, three storms in October already, and I'm in the mood for something dark and local. I dig barrel-aged beers, but sometimes I just want to sip on something simpler and with a much lower ABV.

Thoughts on your favorite Colorado stouts? I don't care if it's got milk or some chocolate or some hops in it or whatever, just so it's not barrel-aged and not like 10% ABV.

For me, Koffee Kream Extra from Comrade and Baere's Stout are my favorite local examples so far.

Check out Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter from Dry Dock if you're in the area of their south dock location... It's a porter but a dark beer and it checks the box for me in terms of a cold weather beer..

Yuri’s RIS from Equinox is absolutely banging this year. Probably doesn’t help you if you’re outside of Fort Collins though..

Big, chewy, and fairly roasty.. has nice dark chocolate, mild coffee notes, along with some subtle dark fruit flavors... all really well balanced for a RIS, as well as minimal hoppy bitterness.

I still think normal Yeti is the best of 'em all for big stouts. For milder ones, Gilpin from Hogshead and TRVE Stout O))) > All others. I also love the new Comrade Koffee Kream and Stonehenge from the Bull & Bush.

Any number of Mountain Sun offerings come to mind, but they rotate so often that it's hard to make a firm recommendation. Finkel and Garf Oatmeal Milk Stout is a good one. If you can extend to porters, I like Crooked Stave Coffee Baltic Porter a LOT.

Stretching to neighboring states, I drink a lot of La Cumbre Malpais and now that they have distro in CO again I'll be drinking Snake River Zonker.

I am still a big fan of Left Hand's Milk Stout.

I miss Avery's Tweak when it was non barrel aged. Epic's Son of a Baptist is a worthy replacement on the coffee stout front.

Can never go wrong with Odell's Cutthroat Porter.

It gets no love here but I (still) love Bristol Winter Warlock when it hits. Fairly low alcohol so I can have three or so without feeling chit-faced. Now if they'd do XXX Warlock again.....

Winter Warlock is still really good. At least it was the last time I had one. Probably 2-3 years ago. Now XXX Warlock...different story. I don't think I liked it on day 1 or day 5001. It was like when Triple Bock goes awry, Only XXX tastes like that every time. They must have made a boatload of it as bottles pop up pretty regularly.

I just had one on tap a few nights ago. I guess I’ll need to look into that.

Still posted as a year round on their website. That it has yet to receive the can treatment might be an ominous sign. I hope we don't lose that beautiful beer.

Interesting. Just curious, have you ever tried Dark Lord or WW Stout? Winter Warlock reminds me of those and I can't handle them either. There's a raisin'y thing going on that I just don't like...and I actually like raisins. I think there's something in there that reminds me of gas station wine.

Ska's Steel Toe Milk Stout is under-appreciated sometimes... even I have to run into it to remind myself that it's SOLID.
