    All Valid.

My wife will be about 32 weeks pregnant, and it will be the day we leave to return back from visiting her family (a solid 14 hour drive without pregnancy pee stops). I certainly plan to try since we won't be leaving until the afternoon, but I don't know if it will work!

Well, Friday afternoon in Indiana is Saturday morning in Japan... pretend you're in Japan! We won't mind!

In fact, that can be part of the fun... comparing notes, etc.!

Fair enough, a weizenbock isn't really what anyone thinks of when it comes to a roadie.

    Bump...
We are about three weeks out. I have at least one example of each style discussed, so I'm not worried about that. We do need to start a thread for the tasting and keep it on the front page or participation will be limited. I'm working all day on the 30th, but look forward to joining in later in the evening.

Haven't forgotten! I have it calendared to start the tasting thread on Saturday. If I start it too early, the mods will delete it.

So what are we doing, Weizen/Doppelbock?

    All three? Cool!

I'll do Weizenbock for sure; I already have 2 different ones in my 'fridge... one German, and the other an interesting "Americanized" one from a local brewery. I may also do a couple of Dunkelweizens; it depends on what I can find; the German ones will be easy (if perhaps old) but the only local ones I can find so far are brewery-only... maybe I'll resort to my earlier "threat" to include the Shiner Holiday Cheer.

(My problem will be wanting to do too much... )

(Let's see... if I start at just after midnight, Nov 30, Kiritimati, Kiribati time and end at midnight Nov 30 Pago Pago, American Samoa time, I'll have more than 2 days! - from 4:00 am on Friday until 5:00 am on Sunday, my time!):sunglasses::astonished:

@FBarber - just for clarity, are you specifically thinking of various strength Weissbier or any Doppelbock in general? In other words, Doppelbock in the sense of Aventinus, or would someone bring Celebrator to this thread?

Aventinus is a Weizenbock, Celebrator is a Doppelbock, so they should both be fine, I reckon.

Personally, I'm still debating whether I'm going to do one of each style, plus an Eisbock maybe, or just a few Doppelbocks, which is by far my favorite style of those. I don't really think that the Dunkelweizen fits in that well with the Bocks or the season, to be honest, but whatever :stuck_out_tongue:.

I just wanted to be sure we casted a wide enough net to ensure that people can find something and run with it.

And yea @Snowcrash000 It would probably make more sense to do a dunkel/dunkelweizen tasting separately ...

Aventinus is both (just not the way people like to use the terms here). Take a look at the “Weizen - Doppelbock” on the bottle label on the brewer’s site. It’s a big wheat beer. That’s why I was uncertain about the intent for this tasting with:
    Dashes and slashes.

The important distinction between a Weizenbock and a Doppelbock being that the former is a top fermented wheat beer and the latter a bottom fermented Lager, of course. So a Weizen-Doppelbock is really just a stronger Weizenbock.

Semantics, I guess, but the terminology is somewhat unfortunate here. A Weizenbock doesn't suddenly become a Lager just because it's brewed to a higher ABV, as indicated by the "Doppel". It remains, at its core, a Weizenbock.

Hence my use of "Weizen/Doppelbock" as the two are two completely different beer styles.

I think many people apply characteristics to Bocks that are not inherent because they are caught up in the notion of styles. If one can accept the logic of a “Weizenbock,” then a Weizendoppelbock follows the same logic even if the word looks silly to Americans (yeah, of course I know where you live ). We can just agree to disagree. Looking forward to your contributions to the tasting thread.

I wouldn’t trust the beers here on the shelf as far as age goes, Jever runs at 15-16 months old. I’d probably have to travel to Charlotte to get fresh Old Mecklenburg, and that’s an hour and a half drive one way. I’ll probably have to rain check this one, Red Oak doesn’t brew and or bottle those beer.

How about an online tasting of the highest damn ABV beer you can find in your market/state? Cold weather is approaching and we need some anti-freeze! I know I can get an 18%, and if I get Utopias then it would be 28%.

Regarding the styles in discussion, Weihenstephaner and Paulaner date their bottles (but you need to look up the Weihenstephaner code)... and you can trust them.

Ok, I’ll take a look, but I don’t have much hope. This store has its German beers at the back of the store buried on shelves, not even in a location a casual buyer would ever see them. Red Oak brews a Dopple but it’s on tap only they have no Weiss.
