Pretty sure you're talking about the Acropolis. But I hear Sassy's...uh...Ballet Theatre...has the better taplist and pint prices. And it's convenient for Modern Times. But that's only what I hear.

As for @Stevedore, let me know if you end up needing food/drink/transit/amenities/general info for the Beaverton side of town. I'm happy to help.

I will, blatantly, take this opening to mention, again, my buddy Tyler's food cart, Avenue St. Charles, which is out there.

That Tri-met pass is a bargain.

Perhaps another difference with Portland (and the PNW) vs the rest of the country is that the concept of a "tap takover" doesn't occur here very often. I know some other places in the country they're super common. Loyal Legion probably does them more than anyone else (pFreimsgiving is actually a pretty nice taplist, although it starts next week) and I've seen them happen at Beer o'Clock too.

In their place, we tend to have pop-ups. Temporary bars that set up in event spaces. There's a space on NW 23rd that typically hosts brewery pop-ups called Function. In fact, apparently they're having a Stickmen pop-up right now.

I think this is completely accurate. Every once in a while I'll see a tap takeover at Beer O'clock,
Roscoe's, Alefire, Orenco Station and Arch Bridge, but it's not very common. Belmont Station hosts periodic special events throughout the year, some of which are quite good (would recommend getting on their email mailing list to stay abreast).

That being said, off the top of my head I can't think of anything special going on this weekend. Not that that really matters. There's never a weekend in PDX when I've had any trouble finding a range of good stuff on tap to imbibe. Most places in town keep a fairly up to date online tap list, and so you might want to glance at what's on offer over at Bailey's Upper Lip, Belmont Station and Beermongers for example (the latter location just put on some Fremont BA stout goodies). For a variety of different reasons I'm not a big fan of the Apex, but they just had their annual stout event, and there should still be a number of interesting left overs you might want to sample (2015 BCBS and the 2012 BA Old Rasputin, for example).

Bailey's Taproom is hosting Brewpublic's Killer Beer Fest 11.0 on Saturday from noon to midnight. The taplist covers a wide variety of beer styles from many of the best NW breweries, with a few Bay Area entries and ciders for interest:
    • Machine House – Autumn Bitter on Cask
    • Epic Brewing – Big Bad Baptist: Peanut Butter Cup
    • Ecliptic Brewing – Barrel-Aged Sedna Tiramisu Stout
    • Fremont Brewing – BBomb: Spice Wars
    • Boneyard Beer – Secret Agent Blonde Stout on Nitro
    • de Garde – The Frais
    • Little Beast Brewing – Pomme Sour
    • Aslan Brewing – Fremontii
    • Ruse/Ale Apothecary – Dreamscape
    • Gigantic Brewing – Blackberry Bramble
    • Upright Brewing – Oregon Native
    • Rare Barrel – Speaking Tongues
    • Russian River – Shadow Of A Doubt
    • Breakside Brewery – French Quarter
    • Chuckanut Brewing – Dortmunder Lager
    • Deschutes Brewery – King Crispy
    • 10 Barrel/Wicked Weed – Floresca
    • pFriem Family Brewers – Ariana Single Hop Pale
    • Bale Breaker Brewing – Brewshed IPA
    • Great Notion Brewing – Plump
    • Block 15 – Sticky Hands Volume 1: Greatest Hits
    • Alesong Brewing – Raspberry Rhino Suit
    • Firestone Walker – Old Man Hattan
    • 2 Towns Ciderhouse – Branch & Barrel: Imperial Heirloom Cider
    • Cider Riot! – 1763
Something for everyone. Don't miss out on that Dortmunder Lager from Chuckanut.

Not seeing a whole lot on this list that piques my interest, but that Dortmunder lager... I just may need to stop by just for a pint of that.

Also... has de Garde recently expanded their brewing capacity? Since getting back from China last week, I've been seeing bottles of their stuff everywhere, and many places in town have had their beer on tap. I can't ever recall a time when it was this easy to find de Garde stuff in PDX.

An extra data point for you gents: Craft Pour House out near me in Beaverton seems to do a small scale tap takeover almost every week, where they dedicate 4 or 5 taps to a single brewery.

For instance: Last week they did Brewery 26 and tomorrow it's Coldfire.

Fair enough, but there are plenty of breweries on that list which may be of interest to someone visiting the area from out of state.

Agreed. I mostly posted a response to second your recommendation of the Dortmunder Lager (which I think is outstanding as well). It's worthy of a special trip, no matter what any naysayer may say about the rest of the list. :sunglasses:

I think maybe a huge delivery was just made to the area. A couple weeks ago I saw ~16 cases stacked up in Belmont Station, then the next day saw a bunch of bottles at World Foods, and subsequently almost every bottle shop I've popped in since. I suppose we'll know if we still see lots of de Garde in January.

I've noticed bottles for sale at the taproom in Tillamook have lingered for way longer than they used to. I don't know if that's indicative of an increase in capacity or less interest in people driving out there. I do know when de Garde moved one of the main reasons was growth (I can't recall the details of how much), and it's been long enough now we might just finally be seeing the bottled results of that given their LONG turnaround times from brewing through barrel aging to bottle conditioning.

I also remember a PDX Beer Week talk a few years back where Trevor talked about a goal of smaller bottles of "gueze" sold in cases like they do in Belgium. Maybe that will be on the horizon.

Yes, and only $10 for a 6 ounce pour. :sunglasses:

My understanding is that they've been pouring the same keg for a number of years now, and always break it out again when they have their annual event. Seems like every other year or so, they kick the price up another buck for a 6 ounce pour.

Help me understand this guys- thinking about checking out Upright tomorrow afternoon while waiting for my wife to join me for dinner. Am I right in seeing that Fantasia is available at Upright for $8 a bottle per the listed PDF on the website? Is this for an onsite bottle/bottle pour or for to-go bottles? The latter doesn't seem right to me..

It's the to go price. It's is 12.7oz bottles now, not there 25.4s that you're probably thinking about.

That price is certainly pause-worthy (for someone accustomed to CA prices) ... but that beer is so tasty. Pretty sure I left drool marks on the floor of the FW barrel house when I saw more barrels of PNC.

yeah they have been upping the price each year or every other year. Since this is a once a year deal for me, it doesnt bother me much.

    Their Pliny price tho........yikes :slight_frown:

The things I dislike about the Apex are too numerous to list, but their pricing is definitely one of those things. That being said, I don't think the price point for this beer is all that terrible, especially when compared to some of the other stouts on offer at the Apex. What I find annoying is that almost every stout they sell comes in a 6 ounce glass, generally for a dollar an ounce or more. Even the Lagunitas stuff (which can be found for $10 or $11 a 6 pack) and regular Speedway stout, typically sells for $6 for a 6 ounce glass.

As near as I can tell, offering PtE for the highest price in town is a point of honor for the owner of the Apex.

Even $8 for a 375ml of a beer of this quality, to go, seems way too low.
