I feel like Petrus Oud Bruin is much less sour than Rodenbach Grand Cru, and really tastes more like Duchess de Bourgogne. It's a traditional style Flanders Red Ale that's not meant to be puckering. In fact, I would really describe it as almost not sour at all.

You may be confusing that with the Petrus Aged Pale, which is exceptionally sour.

I prefer them as well, but to say that Rodenbach Grand Cru isn't sour, is sort of like saying that Yeti isn't a dark imperial stout.

Yep..totally flip flopped them. The aged pale is the one...it's that lemon and apple tartness...and it's glorious.

I never said it wasn't sour. I said it wasn't all sour (it seems to have more sweetness than most other sours I have had) and referred to it as tart. Regardless, I think you know what I mean.

    tart2
    adj
    1. (of a flavour, food, etc.) sour, acid, or astringent

BTW, Yeti isn't a dark imperial stout :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry. When I read your original post "I'd say tart/sweet combo, not all sour which I personally prefer. Delicious regardless."

My brain inserted the word "at" before the "all" in your quote. So I thought you said "not at all sour". Reading comprehension is fun.

Monks cafe is the worst out of every beer mentioned so far in this thread.

Lol, understood. You actually had me second guessing what tart actually meant. I had to look it up just to be sure my understanding of the word hasn't been wrong for the past 34 years

Oh I don't know about that. I think the Petrus Oud Bruin is worse by a good margin. Ratings agree, but I understand not everyone does.

Yeah. I don't even know what the ratings are on a lot of these. I just know monks case is the least sour by far, in my opinion.

I am pretty uneducated when it comes to the shelf sours available here. I have never had Duchesse, Monks, Petrus. I just leap frogged them and went straight to the "world class stuff". I have had Cuvee Rene and Goudenband as far as shelf sours go though.

I think many people would assert that Petrus Aged Pale is a world-class sour. And I personally enjoy Duchesse a lot.

If you get a chance to try it on draft it's a much better beer, although I enjoy the bottles. Unlike the really puckering sours that it seems like most of us enjoy more, Monk's I feel I could drink as a session beer...or certainly polish off a full 750 with no trouble.

The Rodenbach Cru is as drinkable though...and deserves world-class status.

I agree. I've polished off an entire Rodenbach Grand Cru 750, it was an enjoyable experience.

Anyone had the Vintages? I will compare when I get my hands on Grand Cru sometime this week. 2010 is good.

I am filled with much rage to know that Rodenbach Grand Cru is available in Dallas and Houston but not San Antonio.

I pestered the beer dood at one of the Spec's in Dallas about Rodenbach (so some Dallas friends could buy every bottle he had and bring it to me) but said dood always said they didn't have any. Aaargh!

I gots me some Oud Bruin Petrus, but it aint' the Cru.

The Grand Cru was on the shelf for one day at the Whole Foods on Lemmon. I picked up a bottle--first time I've had it in almost a decade. I went back the next day planning to pick up a few more, and it was sold out.
