Jackie O's 2019

Still not clear what beer we're talking about here, but sounds like we're all assuming it's Black Maple...?

There's almost no maple character in it, and you really have to reach to detect it. So if you like a beer with minimal interference from adjuncts this isn't far off at all.

I've regretfully revisited this beer more times than I care to count, on draft and in bottles The only thing there's an overwhelming amount of in that beer is booze and barrel. It's the least nuanced beer they do in that regard, and IMO the worst of their more highly touted "clean" ba bottles. I love a number of their beers, particularly their quads, bws and intentional sours, but absolutely hate BM. Although kudos to them for consistently nailing the same level of burn each time around, when it's not infected.

 

I'll have to stop and see if they still have it today, and get the name.

I find beers brewed with maple, as opposed to finished in one way or another with maple or oak that held maple flavored liquor, often see the maple flavor fermenting out before packaging. At least I did with this one. Although I did find some honey character survive the journey. Plenty of barrel for ya in Middle of Nowhere.

 

What was the temp. when you had it on draft?

I disagree with just about everything here. When the descriptor of booze is used I take that to mean fusel alcohol notes, and I really don't think that's the case for BM. It consistently has some of the best barrel character out of anything they do year after year, in a lineup filled with beers with great barrel character. I love it - haven't had a 2019 bottle yet though.

 

That's pinpoint accurate as to what I mean by booze...most especially in the case of BM more than just about any other JO beer I can think of.

 

I really enjoyed Middle of Nowhere, I think the Honey and the Maple came out nicely. I do not think you will be disappointed in it.

 

Anyone else get the email?

The looks to be worth just for the pre-sale and cellaring options alone. Let alone the 18 bottles. I'll probably save at least 300 in gas alone. Also, no more burned comp and vacay time to make the 6 hour round trip on random Fridays.

Claiming Your Scout Beers

• All membership transactions will be handled through our online store.
• Throughout the year, members will be asked to claim their bottles online by “purchasing” free membership bottle products. This way there is an order associated with each bottle so we can ensure everyone receives their beer.
  • At this time, you can assign an optional proxy you allow to pick up your beer.

Additional Beer Sales and Pre-Releases

• Members will also have the opportunity to purchase extra Scout beers (as quantities allow) AND pre-purchase bottles & cans from ALL of our 2020 releases.
  • These purchases can be cellared along with the other membership beers.
• Members will be notified of allotments in advance of the sale opening.
• If additional bottles remain after the initial offering, we will drop the allotments and have an additional members-only sale one week later until all bottles are gone.

Cellaring Your Beer

• Each membership includes a dedicated cellaring space that can be emptied at any time with 72-hours notice. To schedule your pickup, please contact: [email protected]
• Bottles can be cellared in our warehouse. You will be required to clear out your cellars at least twice a year:
  • June 30, 2020
  • December 20, 2020
• There are no exceptions to the dates listed above. Anything left in cellars after those dates will be forfeited without a refund and will be available for your fellow members to purchase.

Picking Up Your Beer

• Members will coordinate with our membership liaison to arrange beer pickups.
• You may list up to 2 proxies to assist with your pick up of bottles and/or your merchandise.
• Pickups must be arranged with at least 72 hours (3 days) notice.
• Beer is to be picked up by a member or proxy at the location listed below:
  • 25 Campbell St., Athens OH
  • Beer pickup must be made by someone 21 years of age or older with valid identification

Shipping

• We are able to ship within the state of Ohio.
• If you are located out of state, please contact our liaison for limited out of state shipping options.

The Rules

• DO NOT resell bottles..
• If you’re caught reselling bottles, you will be banned from the Scouts, without a refund.
• Please note that your proxy will not receive emails, newsletter, access to our private Facebook group, discounts, etc. and will only be able to pick up your pre-paid beer &/or merchandise.
• We reserve the right to send these beers to regional and national events, pop some bottles at members-only parties and at special events in our locations.

Got the email as well. Plan on joining. I can’t make it down as much and having the bottles stored and presages sounds perfect.

How do I apply for membership if I don't have the email? I don't see anything on JO's website. Thanks.

 

Based on the text of the email, it's invitation only at this point. There are 200 spots available, so if they don't get 200 applicants from the emails, they'll open it to the public for the remaining spots. If there are more than 200 applicants, they'll choose the members via drawing.

I'm not sure how they chose who got the invitation email.

 

Any idea when the info would come out if they got the 200 people or are doing a lottery.
