Man sounds pretty legit. And I didn’t know about that other brewery in Gowanus either

I'm sure this place will be on the pricey side, but if I can get some proper cask ale and Franconian lagers - like they say they're going to offer - it'll be worth the occasional splurge.

If they run this one as well as ChurchKey, gonna be a nice addition to the neighborhood.

Between Collective Arts and Sixpoint opening in that area of Gowanus, OH, Folksbier and Svendale already set up, Finback and Wild East opening soon(ish), Owl Farm.....jesus that area is going to make for a nice walking beer tour next spring/summer. Folksbier -> Svendale -> OH -> Sixpoint -> Collective Arts -> Owl Farm -> Wild East -> Finback -> Strong Rope -> Mission Dolores -> Threes. @jrnyc is gonna need a bigger suitcase.

Engert is the reason the DC beer scene is what it is. All of his places around here have very good selections, and at one of his places you can get 3F and Cantillon bottles pretty much whenever you want.

Most of his places are pretty pricey though, but there also aren't many bars in the US that has the selection he puts together.

I agree to a certain extent - he has access to beer other bars in DC don't have - but I would also argue that DC not having as much competition makes it easier too, both from an access to beer and pricing perspective. That area of NYC has Top Hops, Fools Gold, and One Mile House all within close vicinity. If he prices stuff higher, people have other options in close proximity. Additionally, stuff like Hill Farmstead pops up from time to time in NYC at these other places already, I believe. NRG's close relationship with Shelton might give them something of an advantage, but in terms of the regular draft stuff, I'm not sure how easy it will be to be different, to get access to local stuff none of these other bars are getting, or to have pricing power.

Yeah, I don't think it's Engert, it's the purchasing power of NRG. Engert is the PR tool NRG uses to promote their bars and restaurants as great beer destinations, which a lot of them are, but the superior access they have due to buying volume for 15+ locations is what allows them to separate themselves from the pack in DC in terms of selection and availability of high-demand stuff. Well, that and the fact that they can legally import via the grey market and resell stuff at an absurd markup. I swear, the bottle menu at ChurchKey looks more like something designed to get suckers to overpay for average and/or easily obtainable beer than it does a well-curated selection of the best beer available to them.

ChurchKey's bottle menu isn't anything special. The Sovereign, however, is a different story. It's one of the better bottle menu's I've seen at a bar/restaurant.

Its not opening in Gowanus. It's opening in the basement of Essex Market in the LES . I wonder how Top Hops feels about that? You can't even walk around that stupid food hall with a beer. You HAVE TO sit at the counter at Top Hops and drink. Flawed from the very beginning.

No pictures of the space, no mention of the beer. I’m suspicious.
