Now that I am retired, I play more golf. Three days a week suits me just fine. No offense to my father-in-law, but golf five days out of seven just doesn’t appeal to me. I play with a group of guys, almost always on the same course. I am the baby of the group, at 71 years of age. The rest of the guys range from 73 to 84. Depending on who shows up, we’ll play with three to eight people. There’s always gambling involved. The stakes are low, so even if you lose big, you’re only out $10 or so.

This past Friday we had a foursome. Our third hole is a 105 yard par 3. The green is a little tricky and there are a couple of sand traps, so it’s not as easy as you might think. My partner in this match is an 80 year old guy with a bad knee and a chronically sore back. He hit an 8 iron right into the cup for a hole in one! We’re all excited, jumping up and down, but he’s very blasé about it. Turns out that was his third hole in one on that hole, and the last time was just a year ago. We finished the round, then celebrated in the clubhouse with a beer.

Speaking of beer, now is the time and this is the place, for you to try a new beer and tell us about it. How does it look? What is the aroma? How does it taste? How does it feel in your mouth? Give us an overall impression. Post a picture too.

    Have a great Sunday!

PS: For the record I have had two holes in one in my golfing career. The last one was over twenty years ago, so I’m due.

You hole-in-one guys with all your holes-in-one. I've been playing over 30 years and have logged at least 1,000 rounds and have yet to ace anything but the 19th hole. :sob::sob::sob:

Speaking of golf, 18 holes and other shenanigans around Houston on Sunday will delay my chance to bring a new beer to this table until late Sunday night. But LNNBS sometimes can be the best NBS, yes?

Hope everybody enjoys a good one today!

    Don’t Call Me Honey Boy

Local brewer collaboration with local meadery. The can says this is a lemon tea honey kolsch. I think it’s silly that the brewer doesn’t have its name or logo on the front of the can. This is one super murky “kolsch.” It’s amber colored. Not much of a head. Smells like a sweet lemon lozenge. Tastes a lot like tea with honey. It’s pretty dry (which helps a lot). As a collaboration with a meadery, I wonder what they brought to the table besides the honey.

Happy New CANned Collab Beer Sunday (Week 770)!

I don't play golf nor do I feel that my life is in disorder so I don't have much to offer early this Sunday morning.

I was up in Lititz both Friday & yesterday for the annual General Sutter Inn/Bull's Head Public House Cask/Real Ale event. I was surprised NOT to see either @Imbiber or Steve Jones of Oliver, both of whom have been attendees in the past. I ran through most of them & I think that I am satiated, even with Friday the Firkenteenth upcoming at The Grey Lodge in PHL next month.

This Friday is Black Friday and Funck's in Leola is putting on a GIBCBS event while Hunger-n-Thirst is having a 'do. I am more interested in drinking while out on the town as opposed to adding to the backlog, which I am winnowing down today, beginning with:

I played a lot of golf and became a scratch player in my early 30s. I've had 3 hole-in-ones, 3 eagles on 4 pars and two double eagles. I made an ace on my birthday in 1977 and an eagle on a 4 par on my birthday in 1982. Birthday golf was always fun. Arthritis has limited my current golf status, but I miss it badly. My Dad was a top amateur golfer for years and I inherited his putting prowess. Play on everyone!

Another excellent Barrel Aged beer from Founders, eh?

My ability to speak Canadian is limited but I figured I would add the “eh?” part above as a tribute to today’s beer: Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout. @TheDoctor

I have had this beer in the distant past on draft: a small glass (9 ounces or smaller) for a gazillion dollars. I am excited to try this beer for the first time from a bottle with a ‘full pour’ of 12 ounces.

Below is how Founders details this beer on their website:

    “CBS

    2017 ABV: 11.7%

    RateBeer Rating: 100

    Availability: Dec

CBS was born when we stumbled upon some bourbon barrels that had previously housed maple syrup. We opted to put the same base beer as KBS, an imperialized version of Breakfast Stout, in the maple barrels and, after one taste, we knew we had something special. Rich maple syrup, roasted coffee and velvety chocolate meld together in what can only be described as a transcendental drinking experience.”

I guess they couldn’t be bothered to update this for 2019?

Well one metric is different for this 2019 release; the ABV is 11.3% ABV.

Well, I am salivating just reading that so: Let’s drink!

Served in my Gulden Draak tulip glass:

    Appearance:

A deep brown/black color with a BIG fluffy khaki- tan head.

    Aroma:

Wow! I can smell this beer three feet away!! There is a complex combination of coffee, cocoa, vanilla,…

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a complex combination of coffee, cocoa, vanilla,… flavors. There is a moderate bitterness. There is nothing specifically that ‘says’ maple syrup to me and frankly that is A-OK with me. There is no perceptible alcohol ‘heat’ with this beer.

    Mouthfeel:

The mouthfeel is luscious and silky with an off –dry finish. There is no real aspect of sweetness to remark upon.

    Overall:

    This beer is excellent!

A few weeks ago I discussed Founders Underground Mountain Brown via: “I very much enjoyed the complex combination of flavors which all played very well together like a world class symphony.” I think this observation is deserving of this beer as well.

Cheers to Founders for producing another excellent barrel aged beer!

    2SP - Pale Smoke

Here’s yet another smoked Helles in a 16oz can. I wonder why so many of these popped up in recent years. This is a great looking beer. Clear gold and good head. German clarity. The smoke character is the biggest I’ve experienced in a Helles. It starts aggressive, almost burnt rather than just smoked - but I like this quality. Unfortunately, smoke character tends to disappear for me far too quickly as I adjust to a beer, and this is no exception. I wish it would linger longer. The beer underneath is clean but undistinguished. Overall, I’m quite happy though.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Now on to my new beer. I have to thank @FFFjunkie for this one.

Raspberry Gose from The Sour Note Brewing.

Fairly easy drinking. Slight tartness to this. The raspberry isn't too strong, but it's pleasing.

    Review:

    3.73/5 rDev -8.6%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Pours a light red/pink color. 1 finger white head. Head retention is good. Some lacing on the glass.
The nose is a pleasing sour raspberry aroma. Slightly tart, but there's a hint of sweetness in the aroma.
Taste - There's a hint of raspberry, but it's not strong. There's a hint of the salt. Slightly tart.
The body is good. Not watery. About right for the style.
Tasty, and I could see pounding these on a hot summer day.

I'll be back with more later. Cheers.

Chris, how about Grodziskie style beers, are they more available in the NYC area?

Last evening at a local beer bar I had a pint of Grodziskie from a new-er local brewery of Well Crafted (Lansdale, PA):

    “Wolinski - Grodzinskie - 3.3%

A traditional Polish beer brewed with 100% oak smoked wheat malt and noble Saaz hops. An unmistakable smoked malt character from start to finish with light effervescent herbal and spice overtones. Light and quite sessionable. Na zdrowie!”

I think they did a good job brewing this beer. I enjoyed drinking it.

    Cheers!

Good day New BSers! Well, it's yet another rainy morning here in NW PA but at least it isn't snowing, the earlier forecast for this morning. I haven't touched a golf club since college and I think of golf as the waste of a pleasing walk - 300+ drives onto the green were easy but putting KILLED me. I've served my time drinking the Costco Advent box for this year, so I finally get to drink above average beers again! Today's excursion into excellence is courtesy of @2beerdogs and NBS #10:

Received from @2beerdogs in NBS BIF 10 – Thanks Derek! Reviewed 11/24/19.
Undated bottle other the “2018 Edition”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 55 degrees (As stated on bottle) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Medium amber, slight haze.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to direct light, red-amber and hazy.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.3 cm, aggressive center pour), light tan, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a three mm crown and thin partial cap.
Lacing – None – as expected
Aroma – 3.75 - Weak bourbon, like an empty glass from yesterday that you forgot to wash. Oddly, no coffee.
Flavor – 4.5 – Bourbon is the predominate flavor but is smooth and mellow, not the gullet-burning nose hair-singeing crap that costs $10 a half gallon but the bourbon your best friend serves with a smuggled Cuban on a leather-chair night of reminiscing and bonding. No alcohol (13.3 % ABV) flavor or aroma, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. Coffee rides in on the aftertaste, carried by the bourbon glow. Gastric warming starts slowly and builds to a faint ember. No hops are noted in either taste or aroma.
Palate – 4 - Medium, a bit syrupy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.5. Damn, this is good! A gentle bourbon flavor predominates before yielding to a smooth, non-acidic non-bitter heterocyclic coffee flavor. The 13.3% ABV warms the abdomen gently, ignoring the potential to burn and ulcerate the esophagus. Overall, a wonderfully delicious experience!
    Rating 4.21, rDev +5.8%.

Thanks again, Derek, for this wonderful experience for my taste buds. If I ever get back out the Anaheim area, locations are on you and drinks are on me!

Essentially no. A grodziskie is an auto-purchase for me. What I've been seeing are a lot* of brewers imitating the Schlenkerla Helles but actually using smoked malt.

*By "a lot," I mean way more than one would expect... and 2 qualifies as more than I would expect. I've been suspicious that there's been a huge sale on smoked malt.

Starting out early with a 13.3% bourbon barrel aged barley wine from The Bruery... Was this a needed antidote from the Advent calendar beers?

Ian, I'm sorry to hear that it took a DUI to make you think that maybe you had a problem. I went through the realization process a number of years ago when I nearly lost my family to drinking - those slap-in-the-face wake-up moments are painful but lifesaving. I hope to see you here for many more years, but at a controlled, low-level, interface. Good luck!
