Yeah just saw it at my local Binny's. They must have just got it.

Just curious - if this years' DT is, as reported, a blend of 1,2,3, and 4 year old DT, how is VSOD different?

I would assume it's only 3 or 4 year old blended in.

VSOD says it's a blend of barrels aged 2 years. I guess my point is that it SEEMS like regular DT would be more complex, but figured I'm missing something. @Veliksta1 any insight on this?

Hadn't really read up on it. Hmmm. It's interesting for sure.

I think the VSOx beers are 2 year minimum. So even though DT had components that were in the 2-4 year range it might now be a large component whereas VSOD will only have 2+ year aged beer. I also would think choosing different barrels to blend is part of what differentiates VSOD from DT e.g. choosing more "prestigious" barrels for VSOD vs more run of the mill for DT.

Anyone spot any Deth's Tar at any Meijer stores yet, btw? They usually have it, and I thought it was slightly cheaper than Binny's, but I haven't seen any yet.

When $24.99 for 48 ounces of world-class BA stout just doesn't seem low enough....:grin:

Hey, I go through a massive budget this time of year, so if I can save a couple bucks, I will!

Keep in mind that we're on this constant search to always be making these beers as unique and complex as possible. The winemaker approach to blending dry and sweet components, with various amounts of age on each barrel help ensure that the new batch is never the same as the last. Deth's Tar saw approximately 20% of the final blend be a combination of 2, 3, and 4 year barrels that we had socked away. With V.S.O.D., you're looking at the majority (if not entirety) of those barrels being 2+ years. I haven't had the formal sit down tasting with Marty to break down all the specifics (that will come after the holiday), but in passing he's told me that you should expect a crazy amount of fudge and oak out of this new blend. While it uses the same base beer, can, and name as V.S.O.D. from 2017, it will be a completely unique final product in the end. I can't blame anyone for comparing this new batch about to be released to the one from 2 years ago, but I would encourage you to think of it as a new take, since we continue to evolve and advance our techniques and philosophies. The principals and beloved base beer remain the same though, making it Very Special Old Deth indeed.

I mean, I remember being pumped for the next iteration of VSOD just based on the jump in quality regular Deth's made in the last couple years. This year's DT tastes like it has some "old" stout in it, but not to the extent of one of the VSO releases, imo.

Cracked my first Straight Jacket from the recent batch...it's excellent. Caramel forward, with hints of dark chocolate, mild bourbon and wood, and a lingering cherry sweetness.

We're spoiled that such a phenomenal beer is easy to obtain for months at a time in Chicago.

I've been drinking a lot of good items lately, and seriously, they're drops of Deths Tar, Cafe Deth, and Straight Jacket are amongst the best available. Rethinking my strategy for purchases come 2020...May be happy with just these 3 from Rev.

i've had cafe deth on tap and in cans now, and I'm truly baffled as to how it's garnered the unadulterated praise it has.

quite thin with hardly any barrel. sure it's coffee forward, but there is no richness nor balance to it.

YES! Opened my final 4pk the other night - had one and gave one to a buddy. Saving the other two to share with the 2019 version coming soon.
