Happy Thanksgiving Day Sunday, New Beer Sippers. Hope the Americans in the crowd had a good Thursday holiday and that the rest of you had a good random late November Thursday. For those who had to deal with family, I hope it all went well and no one had to do anything like ban a crazy uncle from the dinner conversation since you will probably have to interact with the whole family again at a Christmas dinner.

Speaking of Christmas, anyone get into the Black Friday mayhem? Or as craft beer patrons, did you opt for Small Business Saturday yesterday? Or as obvious web users, are you waiting for Cyber Monday tomorrow? Or maybe you and the family decided against gifts for self-reliant adults, finally?

Getting back to Black Friday, did any of your local breweries have releases this weekend? It seems a few breweries around me have bought into the Black Friday release concept. Even if your locals didn't, maybe you got in on some of the Goose Island Bourbon County offerings; I'd be a little surprised not to see a couple posts of them today.

On the topic of brewery releases and shopping, they sort of lead me to the point of this thread. Did you find a new beer recently, perhaps from a brewer near you? Are you willing to share a few specifics of your thoughts on that beer today with us? You don't have to give a categorical review based on look, smell, taste, and feel, but we'd like some of your objective-as-possible thoughts on your initial encounter with your beer. We won't judge like your family might, though we might chime in with our thoughts if we've also had the beer - you know, for the sake of discussion.

So let's assume you have a new beer. The pricing here is the same as always - your time and willingness to put together some verbiage into a post to inform others. Sorry that there's no discount this weekend, but we do really appreciate the time you spend crafting your observations into a nice review post. After all, it's the thought that counts - a ha'penny for yours?

Howdy NBS (S: Sunday, Sippers...?) and thanks @cjgiant for starting it...

So, no. I did my best to ignore this Black Friday thing, beside buying food and a couple beers (priorities).

I did another beer errands early this morning hoping to find a new beer or two and I found something that may be interesting... from “Brasserie Lion” in Belgium, an IPA

A 330ml bottle poured into my usual Guinness pint, leaving a few inches of a white head... 6% ABV. Best before May 2022.

The color is Amber and slightly opaque, with a nice retention and lacing.

This smells like this is going to be another hop bomb, with wheat malt and typical Belgian yeast.

On the palate, this IS a hop bomb that goes down dangerously quickly! Great quaffable IPA that reminds me of a Sierra Nevada IPA Hop Hunter regarding the taste, which is surprising if it’s a Belgian IPA. Not sure what HOPS were used though...

Overall, this is a winner and a rare find, I mean; probably a fairly recent release from Belgium that hit our shelves this week. Great IPA for roughly 2€.

    Have a great Sunday NBS!

    Black Friday? Ugh!:rolling_eyes::stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes::-1:
Definitely favor Small Business Saturday. Preferably last & next Saturday.
I was going to go out , because of some things needing checking on at work, but ......had a flat, & apparently my jack was another casualty of September's truck accident. (Two 50+lb tool boxes smashing into it. ) By the time I got a jack from my brother, & the tire changed, nobody near me had the time to repair it. Wasn't going to drive all over on the donut, so........did everything I had planned, & then some, yesterday, including picking up some new beer, and also the (almost:wink:) obligatory BCBS . Pleasantly surprised at the almost-normal traffic.

I still have some work I'd like to get done before the snow hits, including driving to my work to grab some more stone*, so I'll be back later, with new-to-me beer. (1-3, depending ....)

    * The other person's insurance company dragged their feet , finally sending the (entirely inadequate) check 2 MONTHS:astonished: later . Had to buy something in the meantime, so am now hauling sh*t with a small car. It takes more trips.:grin:

    Welcome to December, y'all.
Similarly to those above, I'm not really one for black friday. Don't like crowds, not much of a consumer/shopper, and have too much crap already. And any online deals seem to just be the random third party stock they couldn't sell at full price so they display it as being on sale to try and move stuff that wasn't otherwise moving. I just worked all through the holiday.

I've been debating this bottle for a couple of sundays now... Ale Apothecary is a small one man (I think it's still just the one guy, yeah?) operation down in Bend that's long been well regarded around here for his use of the Ws... wild and wood. I've always been intrigued, but hesitant to pull the trigger, primarily because I can never really justify 30 bucks for a single bomber and my hand wanders elsewhere. Well I've been seeing smaller format bottles on the shelves lately, and while still on the expensive side (15 bucks for a 12+ oz bottle), that's a little more palatable, even if still more of a special occasion kind of thing.

Tonight I finally cracked into my bottle of Ralph. The bottle bills it as a, "wild fermentation ale brewed with fir needles & honey, aged in wine barrels." Sounds interesting.

This is the batch bottled 12.14.2018, so if I'd REALLY been paying attention I would have waited two weeks and opened it just after its 1st birthday. Stupid Kestrel.
So being the pretentious fuck that I am, I smelled the cork after popping it. It got me quite excited for the contents of the glass to come. Sweet honey and berry flavours meld with a yeasty funk and a big blast of pine fir sap. Dope. Looking back to the bottle I see a slow surge of buzzy foam oozing its way towards the newly provided exit point, so I figured I'd let it sit for a moment before disturbing its fruitless progress to transfer to a glass.

I swear the pour came out thicker than this liquid actually is. Like it was a viscous pour of a non-viscous liquid. I'm trippin' y'all. Anyway, the liquid in front of me in the glass is actually a darker richer shade than I'd imagined in my mind brain. Not sure why I pictured it lighter, but this is more of a caramel amber. Not quite clear, but not murky. Mostly just... opaque. Develops a bald spot then slowly loses all its hair fuzzy off white head, leaving just a spotty continent and ring around the cuff. Some bits of lacing too, which surprises me for some reason.

Nose is immediately big wood (get your mind out of the gutter). The pine fir has a deeply sappy character and layers over everything else. Under that there is some dull yeasty funk (less sweet than the cork), with elements of green apple, and some musty earthiness. Wine barrel influence is less notable, but combined with the honey it lends a rich sweet counterbalance to the earth and wood found elsewhere. As it warms in the glass the fir yields some small amount of ground and the wine and yeast assert themselves a little better.

Initial impressions on the tongue lean more into the fruitier side of it, to my surprise and delight. The fir (I remembered this time!) still finds a way to connect, as it adopts a passing interest in the lighter sweeter character I've found imparted by spruce tips in the past (and at least once before with fir in Fort George's Magnanimous IPA). This is at best a supporting role, though, as there's some light citrus and some rich sweet berry/stone fruit. I was trying to figure out where I got the berry thing from when it hit me: it's the wine barrels. It gives the impression of the flavours found in the tasting notes on the back of a bottle of wine moreso than what I find the wine usually ACTUALLY presents, and certainly moreso than I've ever gotten from wine barrel aging before. Still that omnipresent wood, both from the barrel and the fir needles. The tart wild character keeps bringing the word 'raspy' to my mind, and I keep getting flashbacks to childhood hauling crappy green firewood into the house. The kind that's not dense at all, splinters easy, and has those tiny red fuzz splinters under the bark and makes for terrible firewood. Well, it's delicious beer anyway.

I'm a huge fan of this one. I mentioned the price point causing me to shy away above. It's still a major consideration, but armed with first hand knowledge of what could be lurking within that bottle, it's a compromise I'm more willing to make more often.

Cheers y'all and hope your December gets off to a wonderful start as well!!

Good day New BS ers! It's starting off as another rainy day here in NW PA, ie a typical fall day. Since most of our relatives are dead, Black Friday is a day to recover from Gluttony Thursday - but as usual Mrs Lizard found it necessary to do some grocery shopping, bringing home the average of one bag/hour gone. I'm seriously thinking about taking over the grocery shopping.

Today's New Breakfast Beer as well as my New Beer Sunday Entry is from @2beerdogs in NBS BIF #10: The Bruery Cherry Chocolate Rain: (attempt to post pic):

Another distributing craft brewery new to Pennsylvania

Over the past year some well-known craft breweries expanded into SEPA. First 3 Floyds, then Toppling Goliath and just last week some Surly Brewing beers became available.

Bill Manley of Surly explained in a BA thread how Surly beers became available here:

“Throughout 2019, Surly has been working with a group called "Brew Pipeline" -- a new company testing out a distribution model that gets breweries into new markets without being forced into a binding distribution agreement.

Basically, it works like this. Brew Pipeline signs the distribution agreements on behalf of breweries. The brewery works with Brew Pipeline to send beer to a specific geography for a set time. The distributors work to pre-sell the brands into accounts, the total volume orders come in, and the brewers produce the beer.

Essentially, it's a great way for brewers to do small drops of beer over a limited time span in new markets, without the expense of supporting a rep in the market, or the burden of locking-in to a distribution agreement (which in some states, can hold-true for forever.)

We had great success in NYC earlier this year, the SEPA market right now, and in Northern California.”

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/surly-in-philly.627303/#post-6703695

The fact that Surly is cooperating with another business (Brew Pipeline) to make their beers available outside of their regular distribution area is an intriguing business concept.

So, I purchased a couple of Surly 4-packs and today I will discuss Surly Furious. From the Surly website some details of Surly:

    “IPA

    Color: Reddish Amber

Hops: Warrior, Ahtanum. Cascade, Simcoe, Amarillo

Malt: 2-row Golden Promise, Aromatic, Medium Crystal, Roasted Barley

    OG: 15º Plato

    Yeast: English Ale

    IBU: High

    ABV: 6.7%”

Also there is a paragraph on the back of the can listing:

“This undefinable crimson-hued ale delivers aromas of citrus, pine and caramel-toffee. Aggressively hopped, beautifully balanced with a caramel malt backbone, Furious delivers a moment of pure beer bliss that is a style all its own.”

As a homebrewer I found the grain bill to be intriguing. Many ‘modern’ IPAs have fairly simple grain bills (2-row Pale Malt and maybe one other malt). As I considered the specific grain bill and the color description a ‘lightbulb’ went off: I wonder how similar this beer is to Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA? And since I have some Sierra Nevada Celebration on hand (it tis’ the season you know) I figured let’s find out.

My wife will join me in this exercise so served in four small-ish tulip glasses; she will be drinking her beers blind (no knowledge of the beer brands or even beer style).

    Appearance

Surly Furious IPA: A medium amber color and an off-white head.

SN Celebration: A medium amber color with a BIG off-white head.

These two beers look very similar.

    Aroma

Surly Furious IPA: The hop aromas dominate with a combination of pine, citrus and floral. There is some caramel sweetness in the background.

SN Celebration: The hops aromas dominate with a combination of floral & citrus. There is some caramel maltiness there as well.

    Taste:

Surly Furious IPA: The flavor follows the nose. There are the hop flavors of pine, citrus and floral. The malt aspect is more noticeable with the caramel flavors being in the forefront. There is a moderate bitterness.

SN Celebration: The flavor follows the nose with a combination of hop flavors (floral, citrus) but the caramel flavor is more prominent on the palate. There is a moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel

Surly Furious IPA: Medium body with an off-dry finish.

SN Celebration: Medium body with an off-dry finish.

    Overall

Surly Furious IPA: This beer is very good. I really enjoyed the aroma.

SN Celebration: This beer is very good. I always buy Celebration Ale every year and this year is a ‘bonus’ year since I purchased a case (24 bottles) during a recent trip into my neighboring state of Delaware.

This side-by-side tasting was intriguing. I preferred the aroma of Furious but I preferred the flavor of Celebration especially the floral aspect. Two enjoyable ‘old school’ IPAs.

Oh, and my wife expressed her preference for Furious. Her exact words were “I like A” (Furious was marked as “A”).

    Cheers!

Pours an extremely dark brown with a dense, well retained one finger dark tan head that left islands of lacing. Smells of dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, cherries, oak and a hint of red wine. Taste is more cherry forward than the nose would suggest, dark chocolate, cocoa, espresso, roasted malts, red wine, oak, vanilla, caramel and a hint of tobacco. Not a hint of peppers despite the fact that Mexican Cake is one of the base beers used. Full bodied, medium carbonation, finishes with a slightly lingering tart cherry quality, plush mouth feel.

Happy New Oliver Beers Sunday (Week 771)!

It has been quite a week with me being off since walking out of Hand MS on F, 22 November at the end of the school day. I was supposed to be there until the beginning of the Christmas break on F, 20 December, but when my employer, Substitute Teacher Services (STS) called to invite me to take a 5-week position at Manheim Township's Landis Run Intermediate School to cover a 6th grade Social Studies classroom until their new teacher arrives, I jumped on it! Why? Better clientele & given the antics at Hand leading up to Thanksgiving, it was just going to be more of the same for three weeks. It also turns out that the contracted teacher going into that billet is a woman who currently teaches at Hand! Small world & big excitement all around!

I went to dinner with my maternal uncle on Thursday & my Black Friday took the form of going to The Comic Store (a local small business) to buy some MAD paperbacks that I had my eye on anyway & a gift for my most gracious monthly host. I would divulge more, but I don't know how loose @JackHorzempa 's lips are …

From there, a bunch of us met at Dominion Pizza (another local small business) for their GIBCBS event before segueing over to Hunger-n-Thirst for their Black Friday event of (mainly) RISs. I had some Fifty-Fifty Tequila-Bbl.-aged beer that still has me licking my lips! Yum!

Yesterday, I went to see "Parasite" & then joined my aforementioned uncle, plus his sister & her husband for supper. The latter are up from DC & brought me a raft of the Guinness Bulleit Bourbon-Bbl. aged Stock Ale! :astonished:

Today, the emptying of the reefer backlog CANtinues in earnest. My plan is to empty the reefer & then refill it, empty it again, and so on until my backlog is eradicated.:grimacing: I take full responsibility for having let things get out of CANtrol. The problem was going out to drink, buying armloads to bring home, then going back out, not touching the stash. It took being homebound this past summer to realize the need for action.

Onward! I begin the day with an N2 CAN from my mate, Steve Jones at Oliver B.C. in BALMD:

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

I would have loved to participate in Small Business Saturday, yesterday. I didn't, because the weather was horrible. Just a lot of snow, and some sleet. I just went from work straight home after work.

Today, more of the same, so I'm just going to enjoy my day off, and not leave home.

Another reason I'm not leaving home: New BEER!

The Kindness Trap - Coffee - from Oliphant Brewing. 10% ABV.

    From the can:

"This is a blended bourbon-barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout that is an Oliphant Brewing and Historic Casanova Liquors collaboration.

Kindness is doing or being nice to others.

The kindness trap is when doing something nice for others leads to a non-enjoyable experience for oneself.

For example, giving someone a can of coke as a thank you after they use their skid steer to shovel your driveway but then be regaled for over an hour on the current status of their roofing and siding project including the names of people you don't know, the issues with the project, even more names of people you don't know and all the while you're trying to get away to finish shoveling and you can't help but think you'd rather have just shoveled but then they are still talking and it's still about the siding project and it's the middle of winter so why are they installing siding? But that can't be asked because it's gone too far and you can't escape because they're your neighbor and you wanted to be kind because they were kind to you but it's gone too far and the blade to the shovel looks nice and sharp how sharp do you think? Sharp enough..? Is it sharp enough? Is it SHARP ENOUGH? It isn't. Nothing will ever be sharp enough to cut yourself away from this conversation. Nothing but time and being unkind.

This beer is a praise to being nice and a tonic for everything that follows.

    Swig hard and ease in."

Holy cow, that was a mouthful. Better submit that for the brewer's notes.

This beer is another great beer from Oliphant. Nice rich coffee, and the notes from the barrel back it up nicely. Damn good, and it's really hard to tell that it's a 10% beer.

    Highly recommended.

Pours pitch black. 3 finger brown, foamy head. Head retention is really good. There's some lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
The nose is nice and deep rich coffee. The coffee is the main aroma. I do get hints of chocolate also.
Taste - definite coffee bomb, but there's more. I do get some caramel and chocolate. There's also a lactose flavor to this.
The body is quite thick. Slight creamy feeling. You really don't get the feeling that this is a 10% beer.
    Another home run by Oliphant.

I'm going to be stuck in The Kindness Trap for a while here, but I'm sure I'll be able to try at least one more new beer today.

    Tree House Double Shot Espresso

    Happy Sunday, BAs.

I missed Black Friday beer shopping this weekend, as I was instead roped into Thanksgiving Weekend traveling and going to my sister-in-law’s 1995 high school basketball team’s induction into the town’s high school sports hall of fame — four-and-a-half hours of listening to 70-year old men relive their glory days play-by-play.

The upside is that I got to stop at Tree House on the way home.

Double Shot Espresso pours a dark, chocolatey brown with slow effervescence and a finger of dark tan foam head. The head settles into a thin crown and wisp with some sloppy sheets of lacing.

Chocolate and sweetish coffee are what show most in the nose.

The taste follows closely. The first impression is of sugared coffee with some creamy, high-quality chocolate behind. As it goes on, the coffee presents as darker and lusher (as espresso even), but there’s tons of brown sugar, molasses and Hershey’s syrup in front of it. There are hints of cherry and plum as well.

It’s medium bodied and slick feeling with modest carbonation (as appropriate for a single stout).

The espresso on this takes a second to find, but it is a really nice addition to what is otherwise a decadently sweet dessert stout. 11/27/19 canned on date.

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! @cjgiant my only Black Friday shopping consisted of a 10 minute jaunt to Whole Foods to look at their BCBS selection. Ended up buying only a couple of bottles, since I knew I’d be trying them all on draft later that day. And glad I did, since the winners of this year’s BCBS release were the 2 reserves (which I never saw here) and regular, which should be easy to find for awhile.

Today’s new beer comes courtesy @Victory_Sabre1973 . This is the last of the crowlers James sent me from the cold northern tundra. Had to add the beer to the db. Also my first beer from this brewery.

Unlike most peanut butter beers, there isn’t even a hint of artificial flavoring here. The body is a little thin, but that’s the only fault I can detect. Highly drinkable for 10%.
