Do you have additional time to travel? If so, I recommend Carmine St Beers as @jrnyc stated above.

It is very easy to get there from Penn. Take the 1 train downtown to Christopher St (5 stops from Penn, the stop right after 14th St). It’s a 2 minute walk from the stop. Walk east on Bleeker.

Carmine St is easier to take the A/C/E from Penn to W4, it’s 1.5 blocks and a quicker ride. (2 min diff only, splitting hairs).

very true. I just have a bias for the 1. Also that W 4th station is the fucking pitts. Saw 2 guys shooting up down there the other day.

168 is the armpit of the MTA, W4 is the crotch.

Food Emporium on 49th & 8th has just about everything, including the 2-Year ($32.99) and Rye ($20.99) Reserves. The latter two are not on display though, you have to ask. Think they had 2 cases of each late yesterday afternoon, hidden just beyond the checkout lines downstairs. A display with boxes of the Vertical are just past the registers in the opposite direction (near the stairs, can't miss it) and there's a big stack of Mon Chéri, Café de Olla and regular back in the main beer section. Plus there's some of last year's stuff as well. I just picked up a Rye and a regular ($14.99). According to BeerMenus the 42nd St. location doesn't have nearly as much, unfortunate as that would have been more convenient for the OP.

I google mapped it last night. Said both identical (I’m guessing based on specific train times at the time) but recommended the 1 train. Don’t beat yoself up

Yea and the 1 forces you to walk by bleeker st pizza, blind tiger and murrays cheese. So you’ve already had a beer (or 6), pizza and more cheese before you make it to Carmine St.

Yeah, but then you’d miss the locals shooting up either inside the subway or upstairs in Minetta Park. And...if it’s late enough, you can catch the latest drunken fight at the McDonald’s on 3rd.

I used to be around that area all the time. I even had a cop take weed from me in front of Minetta Park when I was 18 or 19. MacDougal Ale House was an old spot for us (great jukebox and a pool table) and Bleecker Bob’s was my favorite music store. Of course, you also had Ali Baba (RIP) and Mahmoun’s. That Saigon Shack has some kickass Pho. The Peculiar Pub on Bleecker was my favorite bar for years.

Peculiar Pub is great but definitely more of a younger crowd on the weekends. Bleeker Bobs is no longer around but Generation Records still is. I go there all the time and hit up Cuba afterwards for a Hemingway and Empanadas.

You all can't be that old if you're phased about junkies shooting up in front of you. Dead bodies in the street, burned out buildings, feral street gangs, constant muggings. I sort of miss the old New York. LOL

Bleecker Bob’s not being there was a sign to me that neighborhood was changing. I used to plaster my bedroom walls with all the punk and hardcore fliers they used to have by the front door. I bought a ton of demos there. Generation is good but BB’s was grimy. I always stopped in there. I used to get $10 cases of nitrous on 8th on the other side of WSP but that’s another story for another day.

I’m 30 and definitely not phased by junkies. Just look at my generation and massive rates of opiod abuse. Figure I would just make a point to bring it up because somethings just dont change haha.

My first beer in a bar was at Vol de Nuit almost a decade ago. I think I was 17 or 18 at the time. I guess that was my introducstion to "craft beer"

I love Vol de Nuit. Always a great selection of belgian beers.

edit: I had my first Tripel Karmelait there about 8 years ago. I’m going to grab a bottle of that for tonight.
