Something has come up that has me trying to downsize my cellar - so I'm thinking of trading more bottles for fewer. My question is how many 2010 Abyss would it take to land a Utopias? I know I can buy the Utopia locally but I have the Abyss and don't really feel like dishing out $175.

I would say that it's unlikely you'll find a taker for that trade, but that's just my opinion, unless there's someone who REALLY likes the 2010 Abyss and needs a whole ton of them. Stuff like Utopias is hard to trade given the price. If I shelled out the $200+ it takes to get one and planned to trade it, I'd probably be looking for one whale-type beer that I couldn't get any other way in return for it. I don't think quantity is going to get it done, personally, but I could be wrong.

I have never tried Utopias, but 2010 Abyss (as pictured in my profile pic) is drinking amazing now and I wouldn't give up more than 6 bottles for Utopias... but that's just me.

My guest would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-15, which would be roughly $4$. Problem is I don't know if anyone would be specifically looking for that many of one specific vintage. Regardless, good luck downsizing the cellar. Hopefully you'll find someone looking to help out.

I think you may have a chance, it's really how many Abyss bottles you have. If you were offering '11 or '12 Abyss, I doubt you would get any interest, but like sukwonee stated, Abyss '10 is drinking incredible right now and is regarded as one of the best vintages.

You have a fighting chance, but it would take a solid 12 pack. Utopias is a $200 bottle. Abyss is $15, and the 2010 vintage isn't old enough to command much of a premium. That's an awful lot of Abyss though...

if you don't set up a trade for all your 2010 abyss, I will gladly help you dispose of/drink them

If I didn't just pop my Utopias, I would think of doing this.

I just had my only Abyss, which happened to be 2010, last week. It was glorious.

I think $4$ goes out the window when the price is that high. Can I get 9 Rare's for a LA Box Set? No.

I don't see why Utopias should command anything more than $4$, granting that it's a lot of $$$s. Utopias doesn't exactly fly off the shelf given the price tag, right? Could you do it for all Abyss, I don't know. But it seems like someone who wants to start building a cellar ought to be willing to shell out for the Utopias in exchange for some beers out of another person's cellar.

This is exactly how I feel. Let's be clear here, Utopias is a shelf beer with ~15,000 bottles released this year. The only factors that makes a trade difficult is the cost, which is $160 MSRP but most seem to be going for ~$200, and the fact that the ABV laws prevent it from being sold in every state. If someone wants to give a whalish beer as a part of the trade that's great, but it really shouldn't be necessary. As for your trade, it could happen if the right eyes see this as there are definitely people out there that love Abyss.

i don't see why 2010 abyss wouldn't go $4$ for utopias. one great shelf beer for another, and neither particularly easy nor cheap to just go out and buy.

It would be idiotic to offer $180 worth of 2010 Abyss for a Utopia.

While this is true, the alternative is also true: it would be idiotic to offer/trade a Utopia for less than $180 worth of 2010 Abyss. Hence why trading Utopias really isn't worth it.
