Troegenator is really good, I revisited it recently and was impressed (and it ages well too). I revisited Java Head recently too and I need to drink this beer more regularly than I do.

I was completely unaware of this and appreciate you filling me on the kegging date for your sixtel. No doubt that I'd give anything to have a bottle (or pint) of this from the way it was in '05 or '06...

Troegenator is one of those beers that you never hear about, but is at the top. Really good!

As far as JavaHead, I was never really a fan of that. The coffee in it was too bitter for my liking. Might have to try it again soon.

Crazy, I didnt find it even remotely bitter. To me in my mind I kept comparing it to really fresh SNPA (which is almost impossible to ever find less than 3 months old in my area but when I do is also superb). It's not west coast ipa bitterish at all. To me it's very middle balanced like a good pale ale - SNPA and zombie dust, but a touch fruitier than those.

^^This was my experience the last couple times I've had it. I remember drinking NN when it was still just in bombers and it was some of the dankest stuff on the market at the time. The last time I had it and was impressed was 2013. Between then and 2016 (I think), when they entered the WNC market, it was not available to me so I can't speak to those years. But when it did arrive, I felt it did not have the vibrancy it used to. I'm willing to admit it could be the classic case of changing palate due to my frequent IPA consumption over the years and/or the other classic case of hoppy beers in general advancing beyond NN, so it pales in comparison now. And, like ESHBG said, it's not a bad beer, but I definitely pass on it every year due to so many newer, better offerings being available.

That's the other thing. It's now a fairly pedestrian beer at a non-pedestrian price

I've not had this year's batch but I remember how much I enjoyed it on 2011-02-18 at the old Harrisburg brewery. It was eye-opening. I left there with a 64oz growler for $11.00. I've had it every year since. The first batch at the new brewery wasn't as good as the 2011 but by 2013 they'd dialed it in quite well. So many extraordinary Red/Amber IPAs have come out since 2011 but I've continued to enjoy Nugget Nectar although it no longer seems mind-blowing. Looking forward to trying the new batch.

This is pretty much me exactly. When I first tried NN back in 07 or 08 it really was a game changer. I thought of it very much as a juicy, citrusy, easy drinking IPA with just enough bitterness to keep the sweet malt in check. It was exceptionally well balanced, and at the time, there were no IPA's remotely as good being made on the East Coast (at least not that I could find). Quality wise, the only IPA/DIPA that was even remotely comparable to it was DFH's 90 minute DIPA, which of course was a much bigger and far boozier beer. Frankly, I much preferred NN back then.

When they first started making it at the new brewery in Hershey, there was obviously a problem. I didn't think the initial batch was as terrible as some members did back then, but it clearly wasn't as good as the beer they had been making previously in Harrisburg, and I could certainly understand why so many people were upset and disappointed (it didn't help that Troegs at the time didn't seem to be very forthcoming about acknowledging the pretty obvious drop in quality at the new facility).

Since then I think it's more or less been back to roughly the same quality as what was made at the old Harrisburg brewery. Some batches have been better than others (IMHO), but it's difficult for me to tell if that's due to a recipe problem or just palate/taste shift on my part. I don't find drinking NN to be the mind-blowing experience it was back in 07 or 08, but it's still an enjoyable beer to have on hand, and is a beer I always looks forward to trying every year. Unfortunately, since moving from Baltimore in 2013, it's become much more difficult for me to obtain it.

I bought Oak aged Moufkan a few years ago and I think they gave BA Mouflon available now.
Too far away for me to drive for this but if I’m near I will be stopping.

    Enjoy

Thanks. I bought some of the first batch of BA Mouflan and absolutely loved it. Is it still $48 per 4-pack? Not sure I can do that again, the market for barrel aged beer is wonderfully saturated right now. Too many outstanding options for less, a lot less.

Still holding out hope that we get the non barrel-aged version one day...

NN is a bit better than an average beer when it’s fresh. Imo really it’s that simple it’s only off with age and it never ever reaches the superb status for my palate. But everyone different, worth buying ? Yes, always worth a 6 every year, two or more if you dig it, but this beer doesn’t age gracefully, it gets malty sweet pretty quickly. I’d love to try it fresh on tap though.

Probably. Their BA beers were around $13 a bottle or $50 a 4 pack a couple years ago. To me, not worth it especially when Lagunitas Willetized was $13/6 pack (now it's in 4 packs I believe - still a much better price).

They did have Oak Aged Mouflan back in 2016? and that was awesome! It was like $17 a 4 pack too! They apparently had a bunch of cases that were dumped once they hit the one year mark though.

Never saw any willetized in the Lancaster area. Between Central Waters, Founders, Boulevard, and a few others I am more than content with my reasonably priced barrel-aged options.

Never had the Bourbon, I really like the basic FM and the oak aged was really nice. I think I paid around $8 a bottle. It was much more if you drank it at the bar. If the basic FM came in 12 oz bottles I would be very happy.

    Enjoy

Not sure what the future holds for regular Flying Mouflan, but they did do a revision to Perpetual Darkness from last year, and in my opinion it was for the better. Far more of an actual barleywine than last year, which to me came across as nearly a Black IPA. It has come and gone this year, despite being canned in small quantities, but it does appear on their website as once a year, so we all know that that means.... exactly nothing.

I do also yearn for the original Flying Mouflan to come back. What a great beer.

Nugget? Yeah, I had one last week. It was fine. Completely average but drinkable beer for me. Has been that way for a few years, really.
