Just poured a can of this fine ale out to discover the glass is only half full ! When did they reduce the can size to 440ml ?

I just checked and in Ontario it is still being sold in 500ml cans.

Would that be a can with a widget (nitro pour)? Could explain the volume coming up short. Maybe they're reporting the real measure of its contents... Does the can say 440 ml? Does it appear to be the same size as the '500' ml can?

Considering the Total Wine shops here have had the 440 for a long while.... yeah it's been more than a hot minute.

The importer (Total Beverage) says it comes in 12oz & 16.9oz (.5L) bottles and 14.9oz (.440L) cans. The page was last updated in September

Speckled Hen used to be a fine beer from Morland of Abingdon, 5,4%ABV from memory. It did not seem to travel well though.
Morland's was bought by Greene King who brewed it in Bury St Edmonds together with lots of other brews. Unfortunately they needed to use the house yeast and this gives all of the beers a similar background taste.

I don't care what size it comes in now. I want to be able to buy it again.

You don't find the widget can to be far superior? I know many shit on Nitro as a surrogate for cask, but since cask is not part of American culture, and home drinking very much is, it does a decent job in finding a middle ground between draft and cask to give a small taste of pub drinking.

I would say, IMO, that OSH and Bellhaven Scottish Ale are both superior in widget can to bottle.

The can is a bit smaller than a standard can , but 440 ml is taking the piss.

I hear you. Those clear glass bottles went putrid pretty quick though.

Could be that I started drinking from bottles but I seem to perfer them. I like nitro more now but I cant seem to shake the idea that is different and the new kid on the block. Is it closer to cask Ale then C02 bottles?

Nitro is not any closer to cask than Co2.

Hey man! it’s been at least a year and a half since you started discussing English ales and cask ale and whatnot here on BA. You mean to tell me you still haven’t tried a pour from a cask yet? If that’s the case, what is holding you back from doing so? Genuinely curious.

Cheaper drinking at home, @JackHorzempa told me about a good Real Ale Pub in Philadelphia that serves English Ales. I was thinking that would be fun as my first cask ale experience. maybe a weekend trip. 2 hours isnt bad though. I should call them to see what they have on tap, I appreciate the reminder.

    Cheers

Ah, I see. Completely understandable and I did not mean to come off as condescending or sobby with my reply. I don't go out to pubs/taverns very often myself (once a week typically, often less than that). There are plenty of places in Maryland that offer cask pours but still, going to PHL will be a really great time. I hope you enjoy cask ale as much as I think you will! Cheers
