    From https://www.universalhub.com/2020/two-founders-somerville-brewery-hopping-mad-over

"Two founders of craft brewer Aeronaut Brewing Co. in Somerville have sued the third for trademark infringement after, they say, he stole the company's recipes, fonts, and even UPC codes to start up a competing brewery under their noses.

In a suit filed in US District Court in Boston yesterday, Aeronaut founders Ronn Friedlander and Daniel Rassi said they began to realize what Benjamin Holmes was up to last month, after noticing he had renamed one of the company's Instagram accounts from "aeronautcans" to "fab_cans" - to go with what turned out to be an entirely new venture of his called Fermentation Arts Brasserie.

They are asking a judge to get Holmes to knock it off, destroy all the Aeronaut-based stuff at his company and pay them lots of damages."

Holmes allegedly accessed Aeronaut recipes right as he was setting up his new place, copied mailing lists and such, used similar artwork and fonts, etc. He currently brews his new stuff at Dorchester Brewing.

I saw the FAB announcement from Dorchester and wondered what was going on. It sounded quite odd that Aeronaut was launching an off-brand contract brewed label, and look at that, it was odd!

    "lots of damages"?

Didn't they just launch? I am no lawyer but I feel like they should have waited a bit longer to lay the hammer down.

edit: I just read the "article". Holycow! Why did the author feel the need to fill it with horrible beer puns?

Would anyone have noticed that the beers were the same if this lawsuit had not come out?

Par for the UniversalHub.com course. Adam does it on the less serious stories quite often, or when things in the news happen over and over and over again, like trucks getting Storrowed, or the Red Line not working on any given day. This particular article would be of the less serious type.

I think its hilarious he stole recipes of their terrible beer to make more terrible beer. Love the drama though.

I don't know their beer has come a long way the past year or two IMO.

Sorry for my ignorance, but is there anything to gain from stealing a UPC?
I know that they've won awards for a couple of their beers, but the initial disingenuousness of having a taproom with low quality beers was a huge turnoff for me. In the first couple of years, it seemed that they cared much more about the atmosphere (which IMO, to their credit, was good for a 20 something that I was) than the quality of their "liquid." It's hard for me to come back from that.

Oh, it's THOSE guys. Now I know who they are.

Fermentation Arts Brasserie is a terrible brewing name in my opinion too.

It really is a terrible name. I don’t understand the use of Brasserie, is there a restaurant involved?

Kind of funny that their website seems less focused on the quality of their beer now than it did at the beginning. When they first started they seemed to really be focused on how much they were bringing "science" to the way they made beer and how that would result in a higher quality product. Now that science part is more of a footnote than a focus.

"Low quality" might be a bit harsh but I certainly don't think their beer stood out. I've only been to their taproom maybe once or twice but it was certainly more of a party vibe so I can see what you are saying. Looking at their current beer lineup at their brewery does look much more interesting than it's been but this development doesn't bode well for them.

Their taproom is the most Somerville part of Somerville.

I completely agree, and the whole basis of my comment is I often find myself drinking their double hop hop or Nandu series and I'm surprised how good I thought it was as expectations were low. Haven't been to the tap room in years doubt its changed.

I had a bunch of their beers in the early years then didn't try until about 2 months ago when a friend wanted to go. I wish the quality was better because they have some good styles that aren't the popular DIPA / stout that everyone does now. Still a shame that they have managed to stay open when other quality places like Mystic have had to close.

Mystic was hard to get to and the brewery didn't really try to market itself. Most people didn't really take notice to what they were doing until they started putting out IPAs. You can't just make good product and survive. You have to make people take notice. Even if Aeronaut doesn't make great beer, they've created a space and environment that people want to go to in spite of that.
