    Hi All,

In July we opened Brewery Extrava in Portland Maine, right in the heart of East Bayside. We specialize in Belgian-Inspired beers and have a family of Saisons and also feature Abbey-Style ales. We serve in our tasting room as well as can all four of the traditional Abbey style beers, Single, Dubbel, Tripel and Quad.

I am curious to know if there are any other breweries in New England currently brewing and canning all four of the Abbey Style beers. We would like to use this fact in our marketing but don't want to provide false information. Thank you in advance for your help.

    Cheers,

Not sure about canning or the four you specifically listed but I would look into Idle Hands, Lamplighter, Medusa and Spencer Trappist.

Two Roads brews all those styles, not sure they always have them all at the same time. I also don't think they can them, my guess is they bottle them like most traditional Belgian styles.

Overshores in East Haven CT also brews all the traditional Belgian styles. Again I don't think they can them. Everything I have seen is in bottles.

There are several breweries that make those styles, one or more of them, anyway.
Some of those package for distro. However, I don't know any off the top of my head that specifically CAN them - maybe Ommegang. Allagash does make them, but they're still packaging mostly in glass AFAIK.

Allagash does not currently brew a quad, a dubbel, or a single. (Not sure if they ever released a single). They have never canned any of them. They brew a saison, but do not can it. They stopped brewing the dubbel and the quad because neither sold well for them. Of course they could brew any one or both of them again, but they haven’t done so in some time. They most certainly brew a tripel, but it is not canned.

I feel like "we are a brewery specializing in Belgian beers, and are the only brewery in New England concurrently offering packaged versions of all four traditional Abbey ale styles—Single, Dubbel, Tripel, and Quad" is a really weird marketing flex in the current world of beer (especially in the Northeast), but you guys do you, and I look forward to trying your wares next time I find myself in Portland.

I stand corrected there -- I could have sworn I saw an Allagash Dubbel fairly recently. I thought some of the other specialty beers are quad-based.

I kinda like the thought - every brewery around has one or a dozen NEIPAs these days, and having alternatives isn't a bad thing. As long as there's the flexability that if the market demands, they can create one - just look at Mystic; they started under the thought that they would never do an IPA, then later pretty much had to.

You could argue their House Beer or River Trip is a “single”.

    Indeed. You could.

Allagash Dubbel has been gone for a year now but you may have seen a lone stray bottle in a store?

I'd agree that brewing IPAs is a lifeblood for most breweries these days but at Brewery Extrava's stage of growth, I think there focused on branding at this point. Mystic as you mention is a good comparable for future, and brewing a Table beer at 4 ish percent would complement Extrava's portfolio (I think the single is higher than that) and stick to the Belgian theme. Ditto for the Belgian IPA - in fact they could go down the line with differently hopped Belgian IPAs to satisfy that IPA itch. And if you look at Spencer - one of the better comparables - they've even started adding fruits (Peach, grapefruit, etc. I think) to some of their offerings. Bottom line - I think there are lots of possibilities to explore prior to going down the IPA road in the interest of keeping it Belgian. AND, the most important thing - I've had the single and it's awesome, reminded me a bit of Table Beer. Can't wait to try more. Cheers!

Ommegang could put a quick end to this claim at any second by just switching packaging formats.

I wouldn't say quick. Building a brewery takes time.

    Ommegang isn't in New England.

Kind of wondering if the OP is coming back to this thread to Thank/Dispute/Acknowledge people taking a moment to respond? Or was this just a thinly veiled "Advertisement" for the brewery......

Are the beers can-conditioned like Allagash’s cans?
