My experience was similar to @swanfungus . Thought it was excellent in August, but something was not right when I had my second bottle in December. The dissolved oxygen explanation makes perfect sense.

I had it tonight. Tasted pretty much how I remember batch one tasting. A little too much cinnamon flavor for me.

Most people don't care to see what others say before checking in. Most people can also tell if a flavor is "off" even if they cannot determine the specific reason.

Traveling in from Virginia and looking for a little help from the locals. I'll be visiting San Diego for work in about a week and will be staying for about 10 days and am hoping to pick up some leftover BL distro and maybe some Fremont bottles. I'll be staying on base at the Naval Station located close to Logan Heights around Senn St.

Which bottle shops or liquor stores located nearby would be my best bet at bringing home a few bottles?

Thanks for any help, its greatly appreciated!

Best damn beer shop downtown (it's inside a grocery called Krisp). Also bottlecraft (any location) has some BL bottles on the shelf

You're in the wrong thread. You should revive the following: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/visiting-san-diego-12-28-12-30.629355/

I looked at that thread and honestly don't think it would have given me the info I was looking for and found right here. I would think the BL thread where fans of BL discuss their beer would be the best place to ask where people typically have luck finding the bottles they distribute. And what do ya know, just above your post I got what I came for. Funny how that worked out.

To those that responded to me questioning me about the Untapp'd checkins, I tpught you might like to hear that I found myself in the 17% (1/6) club tonight myself.

I looked back for BLLindsey's response about the D.O. explanation but couldn't find it. Anyone care to refresh my memory?

Welcome to the club! The post here was something about dissolved oxygen (DO). I emailed BL asking about it and haven't heard back anything.

I also think I opened a bad one yesterday, when I poured it out I got about as much foam as I would with bud light. It was still drinkable and my two friends who tried it though it was fantastic, but they were also drinking bud light. I do think there was something a bit off on it though.

Hi All -- I think someone posted most of my email text already, but to bump it forward in the thread, here's that information again:

We test in-house for Pediococcus, Lactobacillus, and Dekkera/Brettanomyces with the industry-standard BrewPAL and BrewDEK tests at each stage of the debarreling and packaging processes. These tests came back negative throughout the beer's movement, so we know the liquid was clean as it made its way to bottles.

After receiving a handful of messages similar to concerns expressed in this thread, we sent several control bottles down to White Labs in San Diego for a full-panel workup in their world-class facility. Their extensive testing confirmed our in-house results -- there are no foreign yeast strains or known beer spoilers present in the liquid.

Unsatisfied, we've held tasting panels here at the brewery over the last four weeks and have experienced odd flavors in a few of the bottles we've opened. Working backward armed with the powerful reports from White Labs and the odd flavors we've experienced ourselves, we hypothesize that we're looking at a DO (dissolved oxygen) problem that will have affected bottles that moved through a single faulty capping channel (out of six) on our bottling line. Over time, increased amounts of dissolved oxygen in a bottle would affect the natural oils of the considerable cacao nib additions, melding them into off-base, undesired flavors.

Regardless of the cause, the result is that a small number of our customers ended up with bottles of Number Crunch that fall short of their (and our) expectations. I'm here to help! If you personally purchased an affected bottle, please shoot me a direct email at [email protected] with the following details:
    • Where exactly did you purchase or source your bottle(s)?
    • How many do you have?
    • Do you still have the bottle(s), empty or otherwise?
A genuine thanks to all of you who are reading and reporting in. We take this very seriously and it was important to spend some time thoroughly researching the scope and science behind this scenario.

So last week I decided to give the whole “put a vanilla bean into your beer and recap it” thing a try, and wow. The vanilla flavor mixed with DN is fire. Gonna try it with REN next.

How long did you let it soak before pouring?

Just one week. I cut a vanilla bean in half, sliced it down the middle, put it in the bottle, and put the cap back on. Nice little experiment if you have a few extras laying around.
