I haven’t had one in about two and a half years but don’t recall this particular flavour. As an aside, I think the much less discussed and hyped Hacker Pschorr Hefe is an excellent beer for those who enjoy the style.

Mediocre beer with a great reputation

Maybe by German standards... compared to most AAL? No contest

In what way is a weissbier comparable to an adjunct lager?

Wow! My second fave behind Paulaner. Drink this at least 3-4 times a year . . . sometimes by the case. Never had that taste. W is always fresh in Western PA too!

My first with this one as well, again it was a light bubblegum nose and taste. This is certainly uncommon with this beer, but bubble gum, banana, and clove aren’t unknown with Hefes. I’ll chalk this up to the odd duck beer.

To each his own. Big W has been rated highly among hefes if not at the top for years.

I’d agree with that, it’s the only one I buy. This odd bottle non withstanding.

When you get this on draft and it is right it is the standard for a German Hefe.

If you don't like a Hefe that is a different issue. This is arguably the example of the style. If not than top 3 for most people.

I’ve never ever seen a Hefa in any flavor here on tap. It’s Weihenstephaner or none at all.

I find it is still good with several months on it, but nothing beats having it on draft in Germany

You will find your opinion to be in the minority. These folks have been brewing beer for almost 1000 years. I think they got this one nailed down, lol.

I stopped seeking out new hefes after having this one. To me, this is THE hefe all other hefes should be measured against.

I think my statement made that already clear that I'm in the minority. When it comes to German styles, due to the limited range of brands available, like you, I tend to stick when I find the one that is on the money. Weihenstephaner never passes that test for me. I'll take Franziskaner, Ayinger, Paulaner, and even Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss first. The aspirin chalkiness of Weihenstephaner gets right on my tits

Anyway, I"m not stirring it up, just telling it like it is

As in Hefeweizen? Oh, it's available. Hacker-Pschorr is big in my area, but Hofbrau's Weizen has become a very common tap handle too. Used to see Franziskaner now and again, but not as much anymore.

I've found that my palate greatly affects what I pick up from weissbiers, so I bet that's the culprit. In particularly whatever I have eaten recently has a major effect on it.
That's both next-day fresh at the source and and from 8-month old bottles. The same thing seems to apply to nearly anything with lots of fruity esters.

I think the bottled version is great too when it's on. But on draft it is all a German style hefe is meant to be.
