Okay so just an update. Previous thread was locked. I am now in SF. Walked to Mikkeller first full day I was in town. Decent bar with great selection but extremely pricey and food was ok but not great. Tonight I walked to City Beer and Cellarmaker. City Beer is really solid. Great tap list with cool laid back bar staff and really nice shop and some rare selections, albeit pricey. Burger I had was excellent. Would definitely revisit when in the area. Cellarmaker was decent, but very small and super packed. I didn't stay there long, just purchased one beer on tap and one beer to go.

I see what people mean with the homeless problem and things you'd rather not see. It's kinda sad that this is the state of affairs in this city. Overall I've enjoyed my visits here, hopefully things will improve. I've heard LA is even worse. In total, my assessment is as follows: City Beer is a must visit, Cellarmaker is nice (you might as well go if you visit City Beer since it's close), Mikkeller is okay if money is not an object (skip the food). I'll going to attempt to visit Bartlett tomorrow.

I think your time would be better spent going to Toronado tomorrow.

The crafty fox always has good beer on tap and a good lunch menu. However there are lots of food places in the mission that’s worth checking out and good change of pace from union square.

I'd have to uber or lyft over there. Probably will be visiting Bartlett as it's close. I've heard Toronado is overrated anyway. Don't have an unlimited budget. Will settle for Bartlett's, especially for their happy hour specials.

Cellarmaker House of Pizza is great. Has guests taps too. Old Devil Moon is walkable from there too. Bonus, the neighborhood is in MUCH better shape than the ones you visited.

Toronado isn’t over rated however they can be dicks about stuff. Can’t beat the selection and price, yet I’m still partial to the crafty fox which is closer. From union square you walk down to mission st and take the 14 mission bus which cost like $3 but Uber might be cheaper if it’s 2 people on Uber pool. I honestly to go downtown much to eat and drink. The closest would be city beer or cellarmaker.

Live it up! Explore the city! I think a trip to the Toronado is never a waste of time, by the way. The weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow, and believe it or not in spite of the hills SF is a very walkable place. Go wander, and have a few beers while you do.

Sounds like you had good time, but unless you had more beers at Cellarmaker, how can you make your judgment off of one beer on tap and one to go?

To be fair cellarmaker is super tiny and in my experience not a super pleasant place to drink as a stranger since it fills up with groups/regulars. Good beer and I'll check out their pizza place but I don't make an effort to get there when i.m in the city alone

I can see how that would affect someone's opinion of the place or the experience (which is important). Given that they're the best brewery in the area, I let that slide since I prefer drinking from the source.

Yeah I'm not necessarily knocking Cellarmaker by any means, but I enjoyed the atmosphere at City Beer more. I don't really have time to wander around much so looking for more options close to where I'm staying at. Thought I'd check out Bartlett tomorrow as it's my last full day in the city before I head home to MN.

What pat said. Of course Celler and City are a must. But Toronado is a no brainer.

Crafty Fox or Toronado would be much better options. Ubers are cheap and worth it.

Bart it to closest station. Uber from there. I’ve walked from Bart station to Toronado. 20 minutes.

Liquid Gold always has a fabulous taplist and to-go options, and is easily walkable from Union Square. But to pile on, it would be foolish to flat skip Toronado.

    Definitely!

I usually go by myself and end up striking up conversations when I’m there. Made some friends that way.

As a local born and raised SFer and ***** of all things Cellarmaker here on BA, even I don't like going to CM after work or on weekends.

Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday at 3pm. Or Friday at noon. It's empty. The bartenders are really cool. And those in the taproom will either be visiting or the faithful.

I didn’t want to put you on the spot, I just realized this after I posted. I was merely being facetious and please don’t feel obligated or take it the wrong way.
