Does your "source" have these beers fresh?

The Retail Beer Distributors in my town typically have 'old' German brewed beers.

    Cheers!

THIS!!! Moonglow was my absolute favorite for years. I would grab a case every year as soon as it was available. Hopefully Victory will get it back into production sometime...

Same with me, I would buy one and see if I liked it enough to warrant a sixer

Ah, yes - I remember well the golden age of Dunkelweizen in the US.

IIRC, it was a Thursday. Mid-Afternoon to sunset.

They used to keep Franziskaner Dunkel at my local BJ's years ago on tap. It went away. I miss that one. I was drinking it regularly when I began my craft beer experience. I don't see it in bottles anymore either. I'll look next time I go to Total Wine. Apparently the Weihenstephan is the better Dunkel. I tell people all the time to go to Beer Advocate dotcom and you can learn this stuff. Untapped ain't no BA. They'd rather be lazy. I can't remember every beer. BA does it for me. Prost!

Now that you mention it I haven't seen Franziskaner Dunkel in a long time either

There is a whole shelf of those beers at Bevmo that nobody ever buys except maybe around Octoberfest. They're usually not fresh and are about $10/ 6pk. I like German style beer. I like Weihenstephaner, but I never really buy them. I discovered Modelo Negra dunkel lager fresh 12 pks for around $12.

Dunkelweizens aren't super uncommon here in Colorado, but they do seem to pop up on lists in early spring. Of course, my local liquor store gets (and quickly sells through) the big Bavarian examples (Andechser, Weihenstephan, Ayninger, HB, etc) as well. Honestly though, it's not one of my favorite styles.

That would explain Ascent 54, the Fort Collins entry in the Anheuser-Busch regional beer program back in the Spring of 2007.

It was a very well-made Dunkel of which I consumed copious amounts as I was part of the Los Angeles development team at the time.

It's been a while since I was there, but on a trip to Munich, every beer stop went something like this:

    My friend Brett: Hefeweizen bitte!

My brother Dave and I: Dunkelweizen!

    Brett: D'oh!

But seriously, just about any bar/restaurant/cafe had both. But that was 2003, so things might have changed since then.

German Brewers use the distinction "Ur-Weizen" to indicate a traditional 19th century recipe, which are darker than the modern bright Hefeweizen.

Actually, the current BJCP Guidelines (2015?) list Schneider Original under Weißbier. However, they list Ayinger Ur-Weiße under Dunkes Weißbier. Rather confusing.

I see that Rate Beer selected the best beer in Bavaria for 2019:

    Best Beer: Gutmann Weizenbock
    Best Brewer: Brauerei Aying
    Best New Brewer: Blech.Brut

FYI, thread relevant I think as BA classifies it as a bigger and beefier Dunkelweizen, so interesting nonetheless.

Contacted Victory about how sad it was to see it removed. They replied back saying it’s still available in there taprooms on occasion.

I think it's more the place than the time that's at work here. Munich is a bit of a different world compared to Cologne, especially when it comes to Weißbier, obviously .

Not all Weizenbock is dark in color.

Good selections, the Gutmann Weizenbock was indeed one of the best I've had and Blech.Brut are brewing some excellent IPAs straight outta Bamberg.
