Anyone else hear rumors of this happening? I'm not sure if Surly will be sponsoring the team itself but I see that Rising North is NOT on their 2020 calendar. Someone in the Dark Clouds said something to someone else in the terms of Summit taking over the beer duties for the team.

If true, maybe it has to do with the team's move to their new stadium (i.e. not essentially next-door to Surly).

ITOH, if true, I'm a bit surprised, since this kind of thing seemed to be where the new Surly direction was headed, with a greater emphasis on marketing and less on being, well, surly (in the dictionary sense).

Although Summit is in St Paul and Surly in Minneapolis. Summit is further away. Very close between the 2 thou.

Technically, Surly's overflow parking lot -- on land that, as I understand it, Surly owns -- lies on the St. Paul side of the border, so Surly does have a legitimate if tenuous claim to being a St. Paul brewery.

As fast back as 18-24 months ago, the club was looking for sponsorship dollars from multiple breweries to go into effect once the exclusive Surly relationship ended. Summit could likely be taking a more active role as far as an MN United sponsorship, along with a couple other larger MN breweries, but I'd be surprised if Summit or any brewery produces an official beer for the club. When one brewery gets "Official" treatment, it forces other partners into a backseat relationship —a privilege a brewer isn't likely to dole out big bucks for. All that said, I could very well be wrong!

Surly is still a sponsor of MN United, and as part of that agreement, we do have the option to produce a MN United beer... although we're not pursuing that option at the moment. As others stated, Rising North made a lot more sense from a production standpoint, when the games were still at TCF, practically next door to the brewery. We still do a lot of sponsored and combined events with the team (we just helped present boot soccer at the stadium last weekend, in fact) and will still have a large presence at Allianz Field.

Who knows — they still might be planning a taproom-only Dark Clouds beer. They wouldn't put that on the package calendar.
