Which one did you prefer the Trillum or this? Seems pretty equal. Be interested to know how strong/sweet the malt profile was on this one compared to the Trillium brew

When necessary my vet comes to my house and it is a comfort. I just had a New Belgium Trippel and really loved the spice notes and the 8.5% abv. Cheers to dog and human years.......It is a blessing.

Hard to figure out the canning stamp on Foreign Objects beers, but this one just came in, and there's only one other review on BA - from Tuesday. So, I have reason to suspect this is quite fresh. Hopefully I'm correct.

Sophisticated Anxiety

This beer is best described as a lively, hoppy, thin, puree-like fruit smoothie. From the nose to the palate, there is a blend of tropical and citrus juice, lightly sprinkled with sharp and bright herbs. In some order: papaya, kiwi, banana, oregano, pepper, lemon, mandarin orange, mango, pineapple.

Fairly lively, but smooth and almost thick for the ABV. Outstanding across the board. Definitely a fresh brew.

I don't have a new beer to share yet (I'll have a couple later in the day), but the theme for today's thread put forth by @lordofthewiens is one that, for me and Joy (and James, though he lives in Minnesota), is especially close to our hearts.

We're dog people - really, REALLY dog people. Since we've been married (30 years this coming St Patrick's Day), Joy and I have had dogs. When we were first married, Joy brought two dogs with her, Ruffie and Peanut. Ruffie was a big ol' retriever mix (70 lbs or so) and Peanut was a cockapoo.

Ruffie was just a sweet, sweet dog - he was everyone's friend, and he LOVED treats, specifically DB's (Dog Biscuits). Peanut (or Pee Wee) was a little more feisty and a little less loving - he slept on the bed with us, and every night when I came to bed, he growled at me when I pulled back the covers, then when I would shush him, I'd get yelled at by Joy. As I said, we're dog people.

Ruffie lived to 15 years old, which is REALLY old for a dog his size. We had to put him down on 6/1/96 when the dementia he was suffering from became debilitating and his quality of life started to decline. Joy and I were holding him at the vet when he was put to sleep, and that was especially hard on Joy - she'd had him since 1981, when she graduated from college. Really a tough day.

Shortly after Ruff was put down, we moved to Indianapolis (August 1996) and Peanut went with us, as did our cat Milo, who joined the family in 1993 (Milo was a stray kitten we got from the lady who found him sleeping under her car). They both made the move to Minnesota, too, in September 1999, but that was a hard move on Pee Wee, who was 16 years old, and we had to put him down at the end of the year, right before Christmas. We went back to Indiana and Ohio for the holidays, and the time with our families helped, especially Joy - Ruffie and Peanut were our dogs, but they were really her dogs.

As I said, we're dog people, so when we got back to Minnesota, I looked in the classified section of the paper and saw an ad under "Dogs" that said the Humane Society had a litter of 7 shepherd mix pups. I didn't say anything to Joy, but I stopped at the HS that day at lunch (1/3/00) to check them out.

They were ADORABLE. One in particular stood out - he had a "freckle" on his nose and pranced around the kennel the pups were in like he owned the place. When I approached them, he walked up to me, looked up and barked, then sat down with his little tail wagging, looking me right in the eye. I was hooked.

I called Joy and told her she and James should come and meet me there after work so we could pick one out (there were 5 left when I was there at lunch). She hesitated until I gave her my "We're dog people - we need a dog" line, and she agreed. When we met at the Humane Society after work, there were only 3 left. We picked the freckle-nosed little pup and named him Otis on the spot (to go with Milo).

Otis was 7 weeks old when we got him. He and the other pups were German Shepherd/Collie mix. The mother dog (she was the German Shepherd) had died when the pups were 3 weeks old, so they were cared for by the HS employees (who are truly heroes, IMHO), but they needed work on their socialization skills. Otis in particular was trying to figure out how he fit in with his new pack - after a couple of weeks, Joy (whom Otis took great pleasure in trying to boss around) said, "He's too aggressive - maybe we should take him back."

No, we just need to let him know who the alpha is, and he'll fall in line, which we did at home and by enrolling him in "Puppy Kindergarten" classes at the Humane Society. Otis did great (German Shepherds are very work-oriented dogs), and he eventually grew into a 45-pound "Miniature German Shepherd" - he looked like a German Shepherd that went through the dryer 3 times too many and shrunk.

He was a fantastic dog. We put in an invisible fence in our backyard and he patrolled that yard like it was his - because it was. He loved EVERYBODY - the only danger to anyone entering our yard was being licked to death.

Unless you were a squirrel or a rabbit (or, once, a deer) - then Otis would go berserk, barking and giving chase to the offending critter. He never (thankfully) caught one, though, because as much as he disliked the bunnies and squirrelies, he had that much more respect for the invisible, which zapped him once right after we had it put in (I had to train him for a week). That was all it took - he'd hear that tone from the collar, and he'd freeze.

We had Otis for 12 years, and all 12 years were fantastic with him, save for the final 90 minutes, when he was struck by a severe case of bloat (which afflicts shepherds and other breeds with broad chests and narrow hips like mastiffs, etc) and we had to put him down in 5/19/12. That hit me especially hard - he was our family's dog, but he was MY dog. I could give him a look, and he knew what I was thinking. He was just a terrific dog, and I still tear up when I think about him.

The way he went was particularly brutal - completely healthy, at least to the eye, one minute, less than an hour later, you're trying to decide whether to drive him 90 minutes to an emergency surgeon in Minneapolis that he probably won't survive, and if he does, he'll have a very arduous recovery that'll last upwards of 6 weeks, and his quality of life will definitely decline.

We loved him too much to put him through that at 12 years old. So we put him down, and didn't get another dog for 2 months, then in July 2012, I started looking again for rescue pups. In 2000, the rescue pups were about 2 miles from our house, we drove to the Humane Society, and less than an hour later, we had our puppy.

In 2012, I went online and searched "shepherd mix pups." An organization called rescuedpaws.org in Minnesota popped up, so I went to their site and looked around. They primarily did rescues for Rottweilers, but also had some puppies, which is where I found Ranger. He and his 5 siblings were abandoned when they were 2 weeks old in a box under a trailer in southeastern Tennessee.

A 4-page application and phone interview later, we had our puppy. Ranger, one of his siblings, and 30 or so other dogs made their way from Tennessee to Minnesota and we picked him up on 8/11/12. He was around 10 weeks old and weighed 9 lbs. During the phone interview with the young lady from Rescued Paws (they're no longer around), I patiently answered her questions - and she had a LOT of questions - before I told her, "You know, the dog we're going to adopt has just hit the Doggie Lotto." The interview ended right after that.

Nearly 8 years later, our little Ranger is all grown up .....

..... and we love him dearly. He's around 75 lbs, and is a really sweet dog. He's an uber mix of probably 5 or 6 breeds (including Shepherd - his snout is pure Shepherd), but his primary breed is supposedly Mountain Cur, a breed that is good at hunting critters and birds, and Ranger is certainly that. Like Otis, he patrols the yard, and keeps a sharp eye out for squirrels and rabbits, but he also tracks birds - I've even seen him track a plane on a few occasions.

He definitely takes it personally when any birdies enter Ranger's airspace, which includes his yard (and it is definitely his yard - we're just allowed to use it) and our street, so he's constantly at work. He loves to be outside, and he LOVES "Happy Hour" when he gets to enjoy an "FP" or Frosty Paw, otherwise known as Doggy Crack .....

...... but his most important job is inspecting his Dad's beer boxes when they arrive as he did this box from @Ozzylizard during NBS BIF 007 in March 2018 .....

My apologies for the tome I wrote, but as I stated, we are dog people, and I agree vociferously with the point @lordofthewiens makes about rescues - they make wonderful pets, and they need help, or they will be euthanized. No dog deserves that - they're literally on this earth to love humans. If you show them a little love in return, you'll have the most loyal, loving friend you can imagine.

For the price the Reading Premium was excellent and I could see this being in my regular rotation, especially during the summer.

The Black Lager is delicious and I am really glad that I got a four pack, I can totally understand you wanting to drink this on multiple occasions. RIP Stoudts but at least will still have Sly Fox.

Hope everyone has been enjoying their weekend so far. It's really cold and snowy here finally although today's over freezing. I got up early to brew a "fëbzen" this morning and have a pretty chill rest of the day planned. It was my birthday yesterday and although I didn't do (and didn't really care about doing) much, I have gotten to enjoy myself and relax all weekend. I went and got my skates sharpened this morning and went skating for the first time this year. I don't do it near enough, but it is super fun. Sure makes me wish I was good at it haha! For the rest of the day I plan on trying some beer with you fine, friendly folks so fond of fermentation. I've been kind of congested all week but I think I'm improved. We'll see how it goes.

Since I like to try different stuff on here when I can, I figure I might as well start off with this "Estonian-style farmhouse beer" from the folks at Vrooden, a local purveyor of pretty solid more traditional styles/lagers. They are nothing flashy but they make some decent beers. They have started doing some more niche styles (for lack of a better term) that I have never heard of lately and I have enjoyed getting to try them. According to the label, this family of beer is traditionally made with baker's yeast and drained through juniper branches and was made with (or at least with input from) local beer celeb Martin Thibault. So I guess a little like traditional beers made with kviek. No idea on if this one just has an addition of juniper or of they actually use it to lauter I doubt they used a bucket of Fleischman's to ferment it. But maybe...

It pours very clear, glowing gold with a finger+ of kind of anemic off-white head. Okay retention; some lacing. The aroma is doughy with some pepper, banana bread and something that almost rinds me of peanut butter (very faint though). It tastes round and sticky sweet, banana, pizza dough, cloves and black pepper, some spicy herbal thing at the finish that I imagine is from the juniper. It is pretty sweet yet not cloying or underattenuated tasting. It is also fairly drinkable and the alcohol is not noticeable. This is a nice beer with some interesting flavors that go together well I enjoyed drinking it and enjoyed expanding my horizons a bit. I have a hell of a time rating beers like this. I usually use 3.75-4 as a baseline for "brewed to the style" however without knowing the style it's hard to be sure. I would say this one leans to the lower end. It was nice and tasted cohesive, the juniper could have popped a little more and the nose could have popped more I feel when compared to the flavor. I'd have it again, but can't see it being an every-day drinker. The label says it was/is brewed for weddings and the like and I think that sounds perfect.

I think I'll be back in a bit with something else. And maybe some pet/NBSiversary musings.

For today's beer I've chosen something that sat in my cellar for far too long, migrated to my kitchen fridge a few months ago as a means to motivate me to drink it, and is now finally taking its rightful place in my belly.

Also, I'm a cat person. That's right, I said it. I'm a cat person. To that end, you're getting pictures of two of our three cats, like it or not! (Poorly written review below cat pictures)

Schneider – Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock

12% ABV – Bottled 2016

L: Pours a dark brown that I would have thought was a root beer if I didn't know better. Very little head retention and no lacing, but it's also 4 years old, so no idea if that's driven by its age.

S: Nice malty smell, with some booze also noticeable, but not overpoweringly so.

T: Interesting. I'm not sophisticated enough to pick up on what the underlying ingredients are, but this is fairly enjoyable. I can taste the alcohol, but it's fairly balanced given it's 12% ABV.

F: Very little to say on feel. Low carbonation, but again, it's 4 years old, so.....

O: I like it, but don't love it. Definitely not a style I'm super familiar with, so this may take some warming up to. For me, this is a sipper that I'll likely enjoy over the next hour +.

I have had a thought about buying a 4-pack of this beer but my homebrewed Tmavý Ležák (Czech Dark Lager) is bottle conditioning right now so I will soon be 'full up' as regards Dark (Black) Lagers.

Afternoon all, been meaning to get involved here on NBS for some time, and figured today was as good a day as any to start. 15th anniversary just makes it all the better!

My new beer is a baltic porter from Finnish brewery Sinebrychoff. Founded in 1819, they are one of the largest Finnish breweries today and are now part of Carlsberg Group.

The appearance of this beer is top notch. It pours a lovely dark brown almost black - completely opaque and rather "thick" in appearance. The head is pillowy, 3-4 fingers high and mocha colored. It dissipated slowly, but steadily, leaving a thin layer of sudsy foam on top of the beer.

The aroma had notes of roasted malts, some dark fruits, licorice, and dry cocoa. There was a slight smoky aroma reminiscent of smoked meat.

The taste followed the nose with notes of roasted malts, cocoa, dark fruit and licorice, with a smoky finish. Very earthy almost herbal hops provide some bittering on the back end. A light smokiness came through in a more pronounced manner as the beer warmed up.

Feel was medium bodied with a certain dry chalkiness to it. Moderate carbonation provided a prickle sensation on the tongue almost immediately. The dryness noted previously carried into the finish.

Overall this was a really nice baltic porter. There was something about the smokiness in this one that I personally didn't like - I found it to be lacking the more pronounced character that I like from the smoky porters ... but in not being pronounced enough, what was there just didn't meld well with the other flavors. Either go big or go home ... or in this case, either smoke it or don't ...

As for the theme of the NBS this week, we had 2 dogs growing up - a golden retriever named Duke and a Scottish Terrier named Bethie. Both of them passed some years ago and at this stage in life we don't have any dogs, but I do look forward to getting a dog again someday.

And you have already contributed by buying/drinking your three pints so hopefully between us and others they will do something like this again The cans are really awesome, though, especially with the homage to Black Flag. And interestingly enough the BL has the 360 top on its cans and the RP did not...I am not a big fan of the 360 top so for me I can take it or leave it.

9% ABV, an imperial oatmeal stout (I am a big fan of their normal imperial: Night Tripper) with maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon added.
Pours very dark, good head that settles slowly and leaves light lacing. Mouth feel is smooth and almost viscous as a BA brew.
Taste, well, very good despite the fact that the cinnamon was more prominent than the other flavorings. I suppose if you like cinnamon in your hot chocolate then you will be loving this, I’m just not that person. It’s quite good, but I have beers I like better. May be interesting to see how this cellars.

Toppling Goliath Dragon Fandango American Wild Ale
ABV: 4.2-5.0% (brewer doesn't say, so it depends on which web site you believe)
IBU: 10

Hawaiian punch aroma: tropical fruits galore, pineapple, mango, dragon fruit, very, very tropical.

Dark cherry red body with an airy pink head that lasts all of a few seconds before it disappears completely, resulting in a Hawaiian punch appearance as well. No visible carbonation. Can't say I'm all that impressed with the look, but it is probably exactly what the brewer intended. So that is just me.

Taste, as expected from the aroma, follows on with the Hawaiian punch theme, but is much tastier than the aroma led me to expect. Only just tart, so not a mouth pucker-er, but tart enough to offset the sweetness of the fruit flavors. The fruit flavors are much deeper and with more gravitas than the aroma. Quite enjoyable (for a beer that doesn't taste like a beer!)

Feel is moderate with a tingling from the tartness.

Overall, a very well done and enjoyable wild yeast fruit ale. This would be a great summer thirst quencher, but also it would pair well with a rich dinner.

Personally I love dogs but after losing my last one in one of the strangest ways you could imagine Ive found it hard to get another, but Im ready. She was a Golden and super itelligent and loyal. Would lay in the corner every night and "talk" to me- Id say hello maia! And she would woof woof back to me every time. One night I got home from work and she was a little hesitant to go out but she did. As I was walking down my driveway she was running around as usual. I turned walked and when I spun around again she was running torwards me and romping. All of a sudden in mid stride she flopped to the ground. Me thinking she wanted a belly rub I ran over. It was was then I was shocked to realize she was dead. I actually tried to give her mouth to mouth but her eyes were open and she was gone instantly. Never did find out the reason. Must have been an aneurysm or something. My saving grace was she died happy- running towards me to play. That being said all my animals, dogs and cats, have been rescues. I have 2 cats presently. A (what used to be feral) female living downstairs and my 18 yr old blue/cream calico who follows me every step of the way...and absolutely loves ham. Dog me.
Todays brew:
True New Englander DIPA. Dry hopped with Galaxy and Sabro.
Pours a hazy golden orange with a two finger head that thins to a cap and ring leaving plenty of sticky lacing.
Aroma is peach, tangerine, passionfruit, pineapple, grapefruit and yes- I get this with this hop (Sabro) coconut.
Taste follows with stone and tropical fruits, some pith bitterness and raw bitter coconut. The bitter is on the soft side like most of Trilliums IPAs but theres a green edge Im not sure Im liking. No sweetness or less than Id expect to provide a little more balance.
Feel is a little soft but with a super dry edge with very tiny carb. Not oily or creamy.
Not sure if I wasnt ready for this but it seems a bit off. Its not terrible by any means just not what I was expecting from typical T's IPAs. Ive had a few Sabro hopped brews and liked them so I dont think thats the issue. Anyhow OK....not great. Heres Lucy-
