Well, given the fact that Abyss 2010 is well, 2 years old, it should carry more weight $4$ than the Utopia I can just grab down the street for a good while right now.

That said, trading for Utopia doesn't go down often because it's hard to gauge what's a fair deal for it.

If I had Utopias available on the shelf, and I wanted some 2010 Abyss, I'd ask for three + $ to cover. If the person insisted on doing less than three, I'd end the trade. If they were OK with three, I'd open the Utopias and take a pour before recrimping and sending. If they insisted on doing more than three, I would send it unopened.

Some part of the Utopias blend is 19 years old, what's your point? The only effort involed in cellaring a shelf-beer is will-power, and the only cost is a small bit of opportunity cost for the space. So sure, instead of 13 bottles to match average retail $4$, maybe 12 would be "fair".

Please go down the steet and order a case of 2010 with a bottle of Utopia. Can you really not grasp my point?

Yes I grasp your point, and I addressed it in the 2nd part of my post. In my and some other people's opinion (apparent from this thread), the value of 2010 Abyss is only marginally more than a 2012. Utopias and Abyss were both on shelves probably in similar numbers at each store (if not less for Utopias because the distribution is so spread out). Hence $4$ with a little kickback. But of course, trading is just bartering, so whatever makes both sides happy is what should happen.

gonna go meta here and point out that the real reason the trade sounds bad to you is that the abyss receiver so obviously wins the trade, but you also don't want to think of trades as win/loss if i recall.

i'd do it either way, assuming when i'm on the abyss-sender side i have like a case or so of abyss lying around, don't want to drink all of it, and don't want to spring an additional $200 on utopias (incidentally, this is exactly the scenario described by the OP).

sure, my trading partner can't go out and buy abyss 2010... but if they "win", i won't be losing sleep.

Not about winning or losing at all. Just pointing out that a beer you can get on shelves today most likely wouldn't trade for a 2 year old beer at $4$. I don't think anybody who has a case of 2010 Abyss is just going to trade it for a bottle of Utopia they can get on shelves down the street, just not a likely scenario. Again, just speaking theoretically. Just summing up pretty much shows why speaking about beer trades is dumb, and people should just trade beer instead of just talking about what stuff "goes for".

I think the OP should find a Utopias thread and BM one of the guys that said there's a ton sitting on the shelves locally and ask him if he pick it up and send it to him for the cost of the beer and shipping. Gas and packaging would be on the guy doing the footwork because he's a good BA.
I've done that for people when there was nothing I wanted to trade for.

Honestly, I have had both recently and the 2010 Abyss is superior beer IHMO. I view Utopias as a novelty, I would not even consider $4$ in this case.

Perhaps I don't understand the situation well enough to know that this suggestion is stupid, but why don't you just invite friends over, drink the Abyss 2010, which absolutely is drinking amazing, and buy the Utopias? Sounds like the way to avoid ridiculous shipping, and get to enjoy one of the most delicious stouts out there.
