Haven’t seen any discussion of them since they opened, but I’ve picked up most of their canned offerings and have been pretty impressed. They are mostly about trendy stuff like hazy IPAs and slushie-like fruit sours, but their Pilsner was legit good also. I’d say the hazy IPAs are up there with anyone in the area not named Spindletap, and the fruit sours are delicious. I’m curious though why they don’t list anywhere the ABVs of the fruit sour “Spilled” series, as honestly I don’t have a clue where they would be given how thick they are while generally pretty easy drinking. Would love to know if anyone has thoughts/insight there or any other thoughts on this new brewery.
I've been a fan of Dave Ohmer since he first started brewing at Whole Foods Post Oak. He's been brewing world class "trendy" beers since way before they were trendy. So it will come as on surprise to anyone that I'm loving what he's doing at Urban South. I think he just helped them jump into being one of the best breweries in the city. And I don't say that lightly. I have huge love for Holler, Spindletap, Astral, Saint Arnolds and other local breweries. Everything Dave is doing, including his pilsners and grisettes, are fantastic. I even enjoyed his banana beer for goodness sake. Frankly, I consider Urban South to be a local brewery. They aren't brewing any of the same beers as the original Urban South. It's all Dave and his local team. He just wisely took their money so he could open up a kick arse brewery inside the loop. Good on him and good on Urban South. It's a win/win situation. Good question as to why they don't have the ABVs on their cans. I would have thought that was a TABC requirement but I guess not? I will say the fruited beers don't feel like they have high ABVs but I'm not sure. Anyway, I love what they're doing and highly recommend everyone check them out when they can (given the current state of the world, that may be a bit hard at the moment but they can a bunch of beers. I need to get restocked soon myself...
Yeah that banana one was a tough sell looking at it on the menu, but being labeled a grisette, I had to try it. While not a big banana person, it actually brought out the flavors that I tend to like
I had no idea that the location opened - I rarely make it inside the loop these days. I love the Urban South beers the NOLA location has done. Any idea if the Houston (or NOLA brewed) Urban South beers will see retail distribution?
Their NOLA location was pretty middle of the road albeit a great space. This one is anything but middle of the road. Highly recommend you make it in to check them out. They are offering daily crowler offerings during the stay at home measures with some great offerings
