A Porter by any other name should taste so Stout.

He'll only go on aboot cask ale, bless his heart. I wonder, though, if he's had Porter/Stout on cask.

Ooh... I love when the stouts are/aren't the same as porters threads get going. Seeing as I'm working from home and generally not leaving the house these days, I hope this one gets ridiculous. I could use a good diversion. So let me say yes, yes they are the same.

@19etz55, whether a commercial brewery chooses to label their beer as a Stout vs. Porter is a marketing decision. In today's beer world Stout and Porter are the same.

I voted "I like them both" accordingly.

    Cheers!

Well, he has oft made the point that "stouts" are merely "Stout Porters". And, yes, I'm sure he has had both on cask. Threads like this is when I miss @Ding.

As long as they're below 8% abv I'll go for both.

The overlap of the Venn diagram of these two styles is very high.

According to the style definitions on this site,
Porters range in ABV from 4% to 12% while Stouts range from 3.2% to 12%
Porters range in IBU from 20 to 50 while Stouts range from 15 to 80
In taste, Porters can be roasty, bitter, balanced, dry, sweet, with tastes of cocoa, coffee, while Stouts can be roasty, bitter, balanced, dry, sweet, with tastes of cocoa, coffee.

    See?

    Obviously, clearly different.

Thats hilarious - I never even noticed that. So we know its for sure a stout if its 3.2% - 3.9% ABV and 50-80 IBU ... gotcha.

Well, since Baltic Porters are Lagers, and most PorterStouts are Ales, are we all just drinking now?

I prefer porters especially when compared to American interpretations of stouts, which I find too hefty for my delicate palate. Drier stouts like those found in Britain or Ireland are much more to my liking.

Exactly what I was thinking. Hmm, I think perhaps we can taste a difference between the big stouts and a porter, but it’s a blurred line.
