A stout is a strong porter, no? The fact that we have imperial porters now makes it seem redundant, but stouts are usually fuller, heavier, thicker, can be stronger, etc. but a porter can be big and strong as well.

Never had an imperial porter, why not not just call it a stout?

Porters are supposed to have little or no roasted barley, but some brewers still use it and call it a porter and not a stout anyway, so the lines get blurred. A stout could/should be darker and more roasty by definition, but people do what they want to do and make things how they want. A ‘robust porter’ has some roasted malts, more than regular porter but less than a stout.. it gets pretty confusing.

I picked Stout on the grounds that I drank Guinness as an occasional treat during my AAL decades.

I used to consider Stouts to be the most flavorful and big bodied of all Beers.

I find that most of the Stouts that I have tried are not as coffee-d out of it as many Porters are.

    Cheers.

Stout, as has already been mentioned, is short for "Stout Porter", Stout meaning strong. So the strongest porters in a brewery range was termed a Stout. The recipes were often identical except for the water content ie strength.
But post WW1 with high beer taxation beer strength was reduced, the Stouts were no longer brewed but the Porters continued but relabelled as Stout. Many beers have been sold under both labels, Guinness West India Porter became Foreign Extra Stout for example.

This is what we get from the modern idea of dividing beer into ale and lager, a concept with no historical justification. British brewing was in two camps, Ale and Porter /Stout, which is why there are so many brewery signs advertising "Ales and Stouts"
As Stout was never an Ale it didn't matter if some was bottom fermented. Lager was regarded as a process rather than a style.

I drink and like porters, but there are more stouts around and I prefer their more robust flavor.

I won't turn my nose up on a Porter, but to me a lot of them taste like weak Stouts.

Although the lines are blurred, there are still some distinct sub styles. I love a good robust porter or oatmeal stout. There are times when a nice Irish Stout is the only ticket. And a Baltic Porter or Imperial Stout warms my bones when it’s cold.
