Anybody ever use burgundy style wine bottles for beer? The ones I’m looking at have a punted bottom so they should be able to handle at least some pressure, right? Morebeer sells them in their wine section and I’ve been trying to find a pressure rating but have been unsuccessful. Anyone with experience or numbers for me? Thanks!
If you're looking to package still beer, they'd probably work. Pellitant, they might work. Don't know that they'd handle carbonation without a top that would handle a mushroom cork and cage, or a crown.
The punt isn't there to handle pressure, it's there to accumulate sediment in an tighter cake. Glass thickness and the closure are a better determinate of whether or not a bottle will handle pressure.
Huh... I always thought (at least partly) it was there to strengthen the bottom of the glass... you learn something new every day
There are a lot of beers you can buy that are bottled with high pressure where the bottle has no punt. They're still thick glass, though. Look at the Orval bottle.
