Brewing Projekt Resist Double Vanilla Milkshake NEIPA, 7% ABV. Pours hazy orange with a three-finger white head that left foamy lacing. Nose is strong vanilla and lactose. Taste is strong vanilla, lactose, slight citrus, slight sweetness, moderate bitterness. Decent mouthfeel, overall excellent.

Since I was outside, I edited the picture on my phone. I was getting ready to post it when I noted it clearly showed the black lab across the street taking a dump, so edited that out. You're welcome.

Good Afternoon NBS and Thanks to @JackHorzempa for the opening this AM. Reading his reviews is always entertaining and a learning experience. That being said I agree with @SawDog505 (and others )as stated earlier. There was something more welcoming and comforting about the old format. But lets not beat a dead horse its still a great thread, if not the best on BA, and I am happy you let me join in. I did skip last week because Vinyl Saturday (Ditties and Beer) wore me out quite a bit. Great time and participation thanks to all.
Anyhow been really excited about this beer since I saw it mid week so lets hit it.
Area Two Experimental Brewing (Two Roads) RUMBLL Rum Barrel Aged Passionfruit Gose
Pours a medium hazy yellow/gold with quite a large head initially that actually stands up for longer than expected for the style but eventually settles to a thin ring with zero lacing. Its actually a very pretty beer right after the pour.
Aroma- Wow this is more than I was hoping for- Upon opening the can and sticking my nose
in I get that wonderful wave of candied sweet rum notes followed by a deep fruity passionfruit aroma, sour orange, guava and vanillin.
Taste is a lot more of that delicious rum and barrel, a little rum sweetness that gets balanced by a drying oak vanillin, passionfruit, sour orange again, tart saltiness that has a ton of flavor that lingers for quite a long time. This verges on being a cocktail beer, not quite, buts its right there and you get the best of both worlds which why Im really enjoying this.
Fell is light/medium with a slightly astringent, slightly salty, pleasantly tart barrel drying finish.
Quenching with some alcohol in the back of the throat - but more rum character than alcohol
    presence.
Being kind of a rum aficionado I always try a beer that is rum barrel aged and most are a let down. Not this one. This is one well put together brew. Each ingredient is identifiable yet they sing so well together as a group. The best RBA brew I can ever remember having if not the best ever. Its a different take on the style for sure and is reminiscent of Mas Agave from Founders the Tequila Barrel Aged Imperial Lime Gose though I like this more. Doesn't have the heavier sweetness (From agave) that beer has. Its pricey- 14 bucks for 2 -16 oz cans but worth every penny. Two Roads is really coming out with some great stuff in this series. Look for it and drink it if you can. Cheers and Peace to all!

Godless, a Sour Ale aged in red wine barrels for 14 months by Spanish brewery La Calavera (8.5% ABV).

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep, dark amber coloration with a small, fizzy head. Smells quite lovely of light, doughy malt, tart, fruity esters, light funk and some tannic, oaky accents.

Taste follows the nose, with an excellent balance of light, doughy malt, fruity esters of tart green apple, red grapes and berries, mild, musty funk, just a hint of vinegar and distinct oaky and quite tannic accents. Finishes with a medium tartness and some red grapes/berries and oaky tannins lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

An excellent Sour Ale that really feels a lot like a Lambic and came as a huge, positive surprise to me. I had not expected such a lovely balance from this obscure (to me) Spanish brewery, with a distinct fruity and woody/tannic character rounded out by some subtle funk and tartness, while the relatively high ABV is not noticeable at all. Very enjoyable indeed, while it comes at a very fair price as well.

Numero dos for today is this killer smoke helles from Fox Farm Brewery courtesy of @Roy_Hobbs.

Pours the clearest golden straw color I may have ever seen. The clarity is damn near perfect. Thick three finger white head collapses slowly ultimately leaving just a thin layer of foam on top of the beer. Aroma has light notes of grain and white bread with a smokiness that doesn't appear initially, but slowly builds on the nose finishing with a pronounce smokiness. The taste follows the nose with a nice bready malt backbone, some light grainy notes, with that smokiness not immediately noticeable, but building on the palate towards a pronounced, but not overbearing smoky finish. What is really nice about this is the earthy spicy hops are still not only present but really play an integral part of the flavor profile. Feel is light, crisp, and bright. Vibrant carbonation with a semi-dry finish.

Overall this was a stellar beer. Frankly, its better than the Schlenkerla helles lager bier - although admittedly this is a bit fresher than the freshest example of the Schlenkerla I have had.

    Yes, freshness is indeed important.

I discussed this earlier today in another thread:

"FWIW I have pretty much stopped purchasing imported bottled/canned European imports of Pale Lagers, Kolsch, etc. due to the above. I have had good luck with draft versions (because they are kept refrigerated, have expedited transport?).

I am fortunate that I live in an area where there are many US craft breweries that produce high quality German beers (e.g., Helles, German Pilsners, etc.). I can purchase those beers very fresh and they are brewed to high quality."

“Chop Chop” — A collaboration between Falling Knife and BlackStack (NEIPA)

    Look
Opaque orange-golden in color, topped with a dense off-white head. Great lacing.

    Smell
Huge tropical fruit character on the nose (papaya, pineapple, orange, and mango), along with plenty of mint. Very good for what it is, and what it wants to be.

    Taste
More of that tropical fruit character, along with plenty of sweetness (IT’S JUICE!), and a solidly sturdy, underlying bitterness. Mint aspect of the hip blend still makes this one a bit more distinct, and stands out in the aromatics.

    Feel
VERY easy-drinking, and just about perfect for its 6.6% ABV. It’s almost too easy to drink — much like many of the DIPA / NEIPA from BlackStack.

    Overall
Another solid, juicy HAZEBOI. I didn’t expect anything less, but have never had (much less visited) Falling Knife, and they’re the newest MPLS brewpub. A solid effort, and I hope to get over to try them in person.

One thing about Magnify that bothers me is that the IPAs fall off quickly. I finished the last can of this a couple of days ago and it wasn't nearly as good as when fresh. It's a shame.

NBS #2. @FBarber's been busy spreading Chicago love. I'm joining @Pinz412 in reviewing this gem. Russian Imperial Stout is my favorite style and this one, Barrel Aged Chocolate Caliente Malevolence from Spiteful Brewing, is amazing. In addition to the chocolate and pepper heat, this features lots of raisin, which I really like in a RIS. A really excellent example of style. Thank you, Frank!

I received a can from @FBarber in a BIF. Canned on 1/29/2020. Poured into a snulip glass. I took it out of the fridge about 2 hours before pouring, then put it back in about 15 minutes before pouring. It pours a very dark walnut - approaching black. The medium mocha head dissipated very quickly, a sign of the alcohol content. Lots of raisin on the nose, along with roasted malt, chocolate, a whiff of freshly-brewed coffee, and earthy charred nuts. You can also readily smell the bourbon barrel. This is right in my wheelhouse taste-wise. It opens with bakers chocolate and coffee but the raisin has carried over, as well. There are also notes of caramel and earthy char, and the caliente pepper adds heat. The bourbon barrel is strong but not distractingly so. As the glass warms, I think the chocolate is stronger and a bit sweeter and the pepper hotter. The feel is viscous and creamy with lite carbonation and there's no avoiding the 14% ABV. The 12 oz. format is appropriate. Overall, this is a superb example of RIS - my favorite style, and it richly deserves its World-Class rating. I really like the combination of the chocolate malts and dark fruit.

    Cask Beer Rules!!!

Second and final pour today is also a new beer pour for me.

Spiteful Brewing's If It's Too Loud, You're Too Old
(A Collaboration with Kuma's Corner). If you are looking for a light session beer, this 4% pour is packed with flavor and was very refreshing. So glad they are canning this! Purchased earlier this week at Spiteful Brewing.

This is an English Style Brown Ale, 4% abv, canned 4/8/20 @ 14:06:56, 12 oz poured into a nonic glass. It's usually draft only, but canned due to the pandemic.

Appearance: Clear dark red brown pour, mild carbonation, light tan head leaves light thin lacing. 4.25

    Aroma:
Roasted malt, caramel, bread and toffee aroma, edges sweet. 4.25

    Taste:
Mirrors aroma, roast malt caramel and bread. Balanced and refreshing. 4.0

    Mouthfeel:
Medium creamy body, light fizzy carbonation lingers throughout the pour, easy crisp clean finish. 4.25

    Overall:
Excellent English Style Brown Ale. 4.25

Of the beers posted today, I have always enjoyed Surly's Darkness and Spiteful's Chocolate Caliente, tried the later on draft but didn't bring any home this season.

De Ranke Noir De Dottignies and Bohemian Pilsner are the two most tempting new offerings at this point, hope to see more as the day continues.

Also, I couldn't agree more with @TheDoctor 's post, and sentiments posted by several others. Would love a restoration of New Beer Sunday to the formerly great threads through February of this year. I too stayed out for several weeks, but have posted the past few in an attempt to help restore this weekly thread and new exploration highlight for many of us.

    Cheers!

Poured at near room temp from an undated can picked up at the brewery today. The body is black as can be, not even a hint of non-black on the edges when held to the window. The medium head is dark brown, but fades quickly and offers minimal lacing.
Aroma is strong - Chocolate, marshmallow, with strong cinnamon and vanilla aromatics.
Taste is sweet in front followed by a hard hit of Ancho pepper that for an instant feels like the cinnamon challenge but eventually turns to that familiar capsaicin burn. Other's may not like this but I love it. This beer has so many things going on per sip. It ends with a the pepper burn that fades nicely to a subtle cinnamon ending.
Mouthfeel is oily and sticky, phenomenal.
This beer is one of the best new things I have had in a long while. I do understand its profile is not for everyone, but I will seek this out again. Oddly, when I searched for it in the BA database it was listed as retired. However, I bought it at the brewery TODAY.

@MacMalt @FBarber @dukeandduke - thanks for putting up several of these Spiteful beers recently. After spending significant time in Chicago, I still think they were my fave underrated brewhouse. Everything was on-point - and I hope they survive the "now and near-term" in Chicago. I was there on opening day at the new taphouse in 2017, it was clear that there was much love for them, and yet they still somehow fly under the radar in the broader Chicagoland area. Cheers!

I don't think I've ever posted three new beers on a Sunday, but that's where I find myself today. I had to drive down to NC Friday and back to CT yesterday to move my daughter's stuff out of her college dorm. It was very odd to be on a beautiful college campus in the middle of a semester and see basically nobody. Anyway, after over 20 hours of driving between Friday and Saturday, plus nice weather today, I was ready for a few beers today.

For beer #3, I'll be reviewing Cynosure Apricot Mango from Homes brewery courtesy of @FlintB He sent me a killer box of beers in the Rookies BIF a couple months ago. I have no shortage of new beers to try after participating in back to back BIFs (Rookies & NBS #11), which included a couple return fire boxes that added to my stash. It's a good problem to have.

    Anyway, onto the review.

Poured into a tulip. Hazy, golden and very appealing looking. Two fingers of head that dissipated relatively quickly. Smell is great, with the apricot and mango both clearly present. Taste follows the nose with both the apricot and mango shining through. Taste doesn't linger on the tongue as long as I would have expected. Overall, this is a very good, refreshing beer. Perfect for a nice spring day.

Its true. Ive been really frustrated lately with the age of the imports around me. I actually got pretty fresh schlenkerla helles lager bier when B United started shipping the tankers of beer over and canning it here, but since then its largely just become as old as the bottles that used to sit on shelves.
