And you can purchase 12-packs in Delaware for a total of 15 bucks today.

If you can figure out Sierra Nevada prices in PA please let me know. This situation is crazy (but you already know that).

Non-Cheers to SN pricing in PA!:slight_frown:

Why not ask your local Sierra Nevada* distributor? I'm sure the brewery would be happy to send it to them.

    * Sadly, like so many other brewers' websites, SN's website is constantly adding bells and whistles, fancy graphics, moving captions and nice pics while it deletes real information like the list of it's US wholesale distributors which used to be easily found on one of its pages.

Jack, is this an SN thing or a distributor thing? IIRC, Alchemist sets the price for anyone who sells their beer so it’s not overpriced. Assuming that is correct, SN could do the same?

    Yes.

There is a business relationship between a Brewery and a Wholesale Distributor (e.g., Distribution Agreement). Within this agreement a number of terms and conditions are spelled out. For example, Brewery A could stipulate that Wholesale Distributor B must store all of Brewery A's beer at their warehouse at a temperature no higher than x degrees F. Needless to say there will be lots of other stuff stipulated.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has multiple 'partner' Wholesale Distributors within PA. For example, where I live (SEPA), Origlio is the Wholesale Distributor for Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Origlio has a 'monopoly' on selling Sierra Nevada beers in the Philly area (Philadelphia County and surrounding Counties). There is an agreement in writing between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Origlio Beverage LLC.

You live in a differing area of PA and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has an agreement with some other Wholesale Distributor (maybe you know the name of this company?).

Are there terms in the various (and separate) agreements which stipulate pricing? For example do the two parties agree that the Wholesale Distributor can only mark-up the beer by no more an x%? I have never seen any of these agreements (have you?) so I do not know.

What I do know is that I can purchase a 12 pack of Sierra Nevada beer for 15 bucks in my neighboring state of Delaware while my local beer retailer is pricing this same beer at $21+. Is this due to the price that Sierra Nevada is charging the Wholesale Distributor? Is it because the Wholesale Distributor has a HUGE mark-up here? Is it the specific beer retailers with the HUGE marhk-up?

I am pretty sure this is not a specific beer retailer thing since all of my local beer retailers have similar/common prices.

So, what do you think? Is it the brewery or is it the Wholesale Distributor?

You are buying beer that came from a different Wholesale Distributor than me but we seem to be paying essentially the same price. What is common between you and me here: the same brewery - Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

If you ever obtain a definitive answer on why we PA beer consumers are getting hosed here, please let me know.

FWIW when I purchase a Sierra Nevada 12-pack I will be buying it in Delaware.

    Cheers!

    Hi Jack,

This is very good information and you do make a good point that there is one common factor.

I don’t have any answers to the questions you posed besides I do think that Wilsbach is the SN distributor in my area.

I don’t get it, why do breweries put these kind of packs available? They’re common beers available at some gas stations here. At least they didn’t bury in shit beers that they can’t sell any other way.

Pa also has an enormous sin tax on alcohol in general. My dad buys in NJ, and DE has no state tax. I’d be damned if I’d spend a penny in Pa if I had an alternative. You just have to follow the laws on volume, Liquor Agents used to hang out in DE store and pinch guys for bootlegging, my dad was a cop back in the day too. They’d fine and confiscate the product, the car, plus a fine. This was back when I was a kid, but they were serious about out of state alcohol. Now I don’t know where they stand on that. Bars were inspected for the PA seal on the cap, I suppose they still are.

As has been noted many time during these "PA Beer Prices" sub-threads, Pennsylvania's excise tax on beer is among the lowest the US (coming in at #46 - 4¢ less than #42 NJ) and amounts to less than 1¢ a 12 oz. bottle.

Why’s Pa prices on beer, alcohol and wine so much higher than NJ or De?

Pa loses Aton of revenue to border states at least those in far eastern counties. No idea if guys hustle to MD, WVa, or Ohio, I’d guess perhaps not NY.

The top revenue generating Total Wine & More store is in Claymont, DE. That store is located just across the border (probably less than a mile as the crow flies). I go there 3-4 times a year mostly to purchase wine but I occasionally purchase beer (e.g., 12-packs of Sierra Nevada beers like Celebration Ale) and spirits as well. There are always plenty of cars with PA plates in the parking lot.

As to the other border states (Ohio, MD, etc.) I really have no experience.

    Cheers!

Ended up slurging for a case of the retro bottles. Mine are dated 3/9 and with the 2 week hold for bottle conditioning, they are about a month old.

That’s about as fresh as it gets for SNPA, I really enjoyed mine.

I’ll be honest. Everything kind of fell into place. My local store had even stored it in their cooler since they got it in and that’s some rare stuff. I couldn’t pass it up based on your point above and it being refrigerated.

I just got the same pack. Same dates. Still the coffee stout is tasting good! Btw it's flipside red ipa, not fireside.
