That's right! Michelob and Molson were "fancier" then Bud and Miller.

I remember my first Guinness was in 2008. I was 18 at the time and I tried it, thought it was gross, and returned it to a gas station because it was “flat.” :flushed: Being an idiot teenager I didn’t know it was just that I didn’t like nitro beers or that they had a different mouthfeel. Changed it out for a six pack of St. Pauli Girl Pils with no ID

Nice! Thanks for posting these pictures! I remember the ones on the rights - but they must have still been available in the '80s as that's when I became of drinking age - and man I used to chug them down!!!! If I saw a six of that type of bottle available now, I'd buy one in a heartbeat!! One of the memories that came to mind was sometimes when you pull off the cap, you wouldn't get the whole piece of paper in between the cap and the paper on the bottle so you'd have to peel it off...just a little thing, but one of those unique things about Michelob that you never forget! Also, when you sip it from the bottle, which most did, you could feel a bit of the paper from the bottle on your lips. And let's not forget the taste, which was in its own lager hemisphere. Cheers to Mich!

There was also a thing where you'd rip the label upwards from the little semi circle with the eagle, trying to also get all of the red ribbon. Never could do it, though.

Weedy, now that you are a mature and experienced beer drinker what are your thoughts on nitro beers? Still not a fan? Or have you 'evolved' in your thinking here?

    Cheers!

Yup, I remember that one now too! Thanks! Hey - I've always meant to ask you - is that Jerry Garcia in you picture during his Old and in the Way days?

Uncanny resemblance, and I get that a lot but it's not Jerry at all . It's the character God from an old cult show called God, the Devil and Bob. If I were to start a religion it would probably feature a God who drinks beer and hangs out at dive bars :sunglasses:. And looks like Mr. Garcia...

What a walk down memory lane!

We got cases of PBR Bock when I was in HS from a bar/takeout place that would serve almost anyone. I remember liking it but I liked anything I could get my hands on then.

I used to love becks Dark. My Friday reward was to hit the tavern for a swiss cheese burger on dark rye with a couple of dark becks to wash it down.

I have my first Guinness when I worked at an Irish bar in college. Our owner would let each of us invite a friend to stay after hours. Once we cleaned-up the bar, we could drink anything we wanted for free. I had the Guinness and he must have saw my expression as he said "Son that is an expensive beer, make sure you finish it". I did and probably went 5 years before I had another. Switched back to Special Export in the returnable Green longnecks...

Very nice!! I sensed that as there didn't appear to be any other Dead likeness to the picture, but nice that you know who the Jerry God is nonetheless! And do love the picture either way! Cheers!

One thing that was pointed out to me recently was that I tend to have strong reactions to flavors or things I don’t like. I actually have a kind of embarrassing gag reflex that is triggered by a big change in mouthfeel so if I go from a highly carbonated beer to a lowly carbonated beer, it’s like I need a palate recalibration sip. I also don’t like lowly carbonated hoppy beers.

To me, nitro beers just feel silky and flat in a very unpleasant way that I can’t tolerate. In fact, I used to do some nitro beers at Blue Pants and I would never actually drink them. I’d pour them to make sure the cascading effect was working as it should and then I’d dump the glass.

We used to go for the Molson Brador for the high alcohol imports.

Whoa! You sound like Erica Goldberg!?!:grimacing:

I am personally not a fan of beers that have been nitro'ed because it seems like this 'dumbs down' the beer for my palate. I once had a side-by-side of two glasses of Troegs Nugget Nectar (one CO2 and one N2) and the nitro'ed one seemed like it had no flavor.

Let's just say "No to nitro".

    Cheers!

Also when we crossed the border into Ontario from Upstate NY we would get the Molson XXX for the real high alcohol beer. I don't think that one was available at the time in the US.

I generally don't like Nitro but I have to hand it to Left Hand, their Nitros are quite tasty.

Whereabouts? Somewhere in Milwaukee? I ask because I visited a pretty nice Irish place just north of (then) County Stadium where we were called to judge a home-brew competition -- cozy little joint, but I can't remember the name.

I'll beg to disagree... Well, at least for a couple of specific examples/styles.

Belhaven's Scottish ale seems to show it's best when on nitro. Also, the very best glass of Deschutes Abyss I ever had was on nitro. Other than that, well...

Otherwise, I tend to agree. In particular, IPA's and APA's do not seem to show well on nitro.

For some reason the brewer at North Coast Brewing seems to like the nitro treatment on his red seal ale (an APA). If you go to the pub in Ft. Bragg, you can drink red seal on cask, CO2 and nitro. The bartender there always gushes about the nitro version, and every time I tell her the same thing you do Jack. "I don't think the nitro helps this beer at all... I think it dumbs down the flavor so please give me a glass of cask red seal instead" (cask red seal is sublime).

Nitro NN ought to be outlawed. IMHO.
