Perhaps for beer, but in my opinion marketing has become far more ubiquitous and effective. Not sure anyone would be persuaded to clamor, even wait in line, for products which not only know where you are, where you plan to go, everything you purchased or plan on purchasing, or spy on conversations in your home, but also target additional ads based on your known behavior.

The Stasi were pikers compared to Silicon Valley over the past two decades.

Yes, the only beers I would drink were primarily Guinness (available in every Irish bar) and Heineken in non Irish bars (even if they had it, they could not pour a proper pint). This was in the 1980s-1990s. Nearly all my male friends drank Miller Lite, except the peeps from the Emerald Isle who would drink Guinness.

Was a Michelob fan back in the day, their light beer was the only light beer I liked, though they changed it a few years after Ultra came out, consistent with most other changes by AB and other Macros over the years, lighter, less taste, less bitterness.

I like Nitro draft pours (and love Cask) to this day, guess that makes me an outlier. Few places carry either, so it's a treat when I encounter this, with one local brewery (Alarmist) a destination primarily just for cask pours. Goose Island and Revolution are the other two Chicago breweries which occasionally carry cask.

How was Guinness and Heineken in a half and half? Sounds interesting.

    Do you like cask?

I didn't see too much Guinness draft in the late 60s and into the mid 70s, but bottles were available if not ubiquitous. Heineken, Lowenbrau, Bass Ale, and Guinness were our exotic choices for a good while. Then Beck's Dark became a local favorite. We found the Norwegian Ringnes in Richmond in the early 70s and loved it. It was very clean and crisp, and cheap. I would buy it now.

I'm curious how you're approaching the cellar treatment of this beer, are you by any chance kräusening it or spunding it? I would imagine that Michelob of that time period would have followed the typical American process of aging the young beer first in ruh vats followed by some time in chip casks where it would be kräusened (the abbreviated process of which is of course still followed by AB with Budweiser).

A sense of shame is something I never really developed. :joy:

Nah, that “flat” Guinness was my first beer of the night. Those were just the days of feeling invincible and having a “What’s the worst the could happen” approach to life

We sold a LOT of Raspy nitro back in the old Green Frog days. That beer is much better on nitro than CO2.

Agreed. In fact, I'm fairly sure that's the only way they sell it at the brewpub. Had forgotten about that... And you're right Terry, it's really good on the nitro.

This thread raised my curiosity. I popped into a local grocery store today and picked up a six pack for $6.99. Keep in mind this store chain (Schnucks) is St. Louis based.

I suppose 20069 means March 9th, 2020 for the packaging date. I will include a picture and comments once I get into the six pack. Today is for Mexican beer...

While I may not always like Inbev/AB beers. I can always say they're well manufactured, and consistent in how they're manufactured. Get one, they taste the same from one beer to the other, no matter where you drink one. Michelob Original Lager for me is generally their best product in terms of what this company brews in the USA.

It sounds like @KentT values consistency and perhaps he still has memories of the infected BCBS beers of 2015?

    Cheers!

I am talking Macrobrews here, not Inbev craft or imports. BCBS I like when I can afford their beers, by the way.

Yep it's a definite challenge to brew a light tasting beer that exhibits no flaws.

Some folks (not me of course) would argue that the lack of any discernable flavor is itself a flaw. Those folks (not me of course) would argue that beers like Michelob and it's ilk (bud, miller, coors, etc.) are some of the most flawed beers on the market, just for that reason.

The ability to make the same lightly flavored swill over and over again, and have it taste pretty much the same every time, and all over the country, is impressive I suppose, but doesn't make me look upon it with any more fondness.

For example... "Wow, this almost completely flavorless swill I'm now drinking here in Portland tastes almost identical to the nearly completely flavorless swill made by the same producer that I drank back in Baltimore. Wow. That's really impressive." (sarcasm intended)
