My 6 year old loves this can and thinks this is probably the best beer ever - we shall see.

Pours a dark orange-tinged amber color. Somewhat cloudy with a thin weak white head. Aroma is mild, but very nice as hints of orange and pine along with some caramel malts come across the nose. The flavor of this is really nice - its balanced yet flavorful with notes of orange, pine, lemongrass and some herbal-earthy hop notes. The bitterness is initially moderate, but builds on itself as the beer is consumed leaving a bitter aftertaste on the finish. Feel is crisp, easy drinking, with some bright carbonation. Overall its not the best beer Ive ever had, but its a damn good really enjoyable IPA.

I am a big fan of Half Acre's Daisy Cutter, and most other offerings from this great local brewer, but this is a rare miss for me. I went to pick up the new Keeping Together offering brewed by Averie Swanson, former head brewer at Jester King who has opened her own small batch brewing shop within Half Acre. This DDC was also offered when I logged in for purchase, so I picked up both (later returned for more Keeping Together and Fader, their Pilsner).

When I saw the enormous line (sold out a few hours in) when picking up the beer yesterday, I feared this wouldn't be a balanced version but rather a very sweet NEIPA haze bomb. My fears were realized this afternoon after cracking this pour open.

Appearance: Murky darker orange juice colour pour, bubbly white head dissipates into a spotty soapy lacing a few minutes in. 3.25

    Aroma:
Strong sweet sugar bomb, grapefruit citrus aroma leads, light pine backs. 3.75

    Taste:
Less sweet than the aroma would lead, but still very sweet. Light dry bitterness attempts to balance this pour, but sweetness reigns. Citrus dominates, lemon and grapefruit back. Tastes like Tang with double spoons of mixture, or a mouth full of orange tic tacs. 2.5

    Mouthfeel:
Light fizzy carbonation, medium creamy body, fizzy sugar aftertaste, lightly dry. 3.0

    Overall:
This is not the style I crave. Balance attempted but too sweet. Have three more to go, would never pick this up again, especially at this price point. Rare miss by Half Acre. 2.75

Of the many great reviews posted so far, I am most apt to seek out @GrumpyGas 's EGLe's local collaboration the most, and would love to come across @Ozzylizard 's Bruery Barleywine, @JackHorzempa 's Evolution Lot No. 3 IPA and @WunderLlama 's Daily Serving Mixed Berry by Trillium (and congratulations to Noah, Mom and Dad!) down the road.

Looking forward to more great beer ideas as the day progresses.

    Wittorfer Brauerei Komfortzone IPA

Pours a hazed yellow to orange color with a huge, stable head.

Smells of a multi layered hoppiness, defined by limes, luscious oranges and pickly passionfruit and kiwis. This gets balanced by blueberry bush, light cake malts and a whiff of wild honey, adding to the ripeness of the hops.

This has an utmost creamy, smooth mouthfeel with an outstanding softness. After its first impression, the beer develops a pleasantly lively and refreshing carbonation, gently balanced by the creamy mouthfeel.

Tastes just as fruity as the nose indicated, releasing an initial bitterness, resulting from prominent limes in this, which get enriched by riper oranges and pineapple sorbet. The fruit basket in this gets not only coated by a prominent bitterness but also by a lighter, well working carbonation and subtle malts, lending a lighter sweetness to the hops. This finishes with a world class creaminess and a refreshing interplay between limes and blueberries, creating a long lasting, dry finish with rock sugar sprinkled bread being able to add in.

This is a real surprise to me. The beer works on all fronts, it actually tastes great to me. These guys nailed it, even though they‘re quite new to the haze boiz scene and manage to release their beer‘s for fair price without any rambling social media advertising.

I'm having my first Thomas Hooker #No Filter New Englan IPA. It's a fruitbomb. There are strong aromas & flavors of citrus & tropical fruits. The smell is strong with orange, lemon, mango, papaya and apricot. The taste follows closely, but is even stronger. Appearance is
very light golden orange color. Hazy. One finger white head that had ok retention and left meh lacing. I rated it at 4.09, which was 3.3% lower than its overall rating of 4.23. It was pretty good in a style I'm not super fond of.

Workhorse Margarita Key Lime Gose with Sea Salt

This one's pretty tough for me to rate. It does taste somewhat like a Margarita (naturally), but it's much thicker than the namesake drink - and thicker than I expect from a Gose, as well. The Key lime (I'm damn biased toward that fruit, so you'd better nail it!) comes through quite nicely; both on the nose and the palate, it's somewhat sharp and musty up front, but the Key lime flavor on the second half is excellent and on point.

This hits me as somewhere in between a Gose and a fruited American Wild Ale. It's not perfect, and it's not as quaffable and crushable as most American takes on the Gose style, but it's also very darn tasty.

You may be interested in knowing that Trendler Pilsner has ‘evolved’ over the years. Back in 2016 I discussed on New Beer Sunday a version of Trendler Pilsner that was brewed using Citra Hops:

“Trendler is our Old World meets New World Pilsner. Brewed with wheat. Well hopped with Citra. We brew and can this beer for Jean’s grandfather Joseph Trendler, but make enough of it to share with everyone! Balanced and intentional.”

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-sunday-week-606.453774/#post-5036260

While I enjoyed drinking this ‘version’ of Trendler Pilsner it was not exactly a favorite for me.

My understanding is that the majority of Tired Hands customers then (and even today) are Haze Bros who expect to obtain a ‘rush’ from New World hops and back in 2016 Jean Broillet provided that to them in the case of a Pilsner brewed using Citra hops (and wheat malt too).

The ‘good news’ (well, I think it is good news) is that Jean over the past few years has seemed to arrive at a position where he chooses to produce Juicy/Hazy IPAs & Milkshake IPAs to keep the majority of his customers happy and produce ‘traditional’ beers as well. The 2020 version of Trendler Pilsner you consumed is brewed the ‘right’ way now:

    “Trendler Pilsner

Our Pilsner. 5.0%. Brewed with all German Pilsner malt and hopped emphatically with Spalter Select from our most recent German selections. Fermented with our house lager yeast and cold conditioned for many moons. We brew this beer for Jean’s grandfather, Joseph Trendler, but make enough of it to share with everyone!”

I am a BIG fan of contemporary Tired Hands lagers: e.g., Trendler Pilsner, Trendler Helles, the latest version of Austere Modular which I discussed recently in NBS (see link below).

As regards how ‘best’ to describe Pilsner Malt flavors, it has been my experience that beers which feature Pilsner Malt (e.g., Pilsner, Helles, Kolsch, etc.) will have varying flavor profiles depending upon the brand of Pilsner Malt used to produce the beer. Tired Hands chooses to use Weyermann Pilsner Malt. I too buy big bags of Weyermann Pilsner malt for my homebrewing (I recently brewed a Kolsch &1896 Michelob using Weyermann). For my palate the dominant flavors provided by Weyermann is a combination of bready and almost cracker-like flavors with just a very tiny bit of sweetness. Below is how I described the aroma/flavor of Tired Hands Austere Modular which was brewed using Weyermann Pilsner Malt:

    “Aroma:

A vibrant combination of bready malt and hop aromas of herbal/spicy but also a bit of floral as well.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with the combination of bready malt and herbal/spicy flavors (the floral aspect is not as noticeable). There is a firm bitterness.”

So, I listed the dominant flavor of “bready” there.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-sunday-week-794.639339/#post-6897233

I feel that I should once again state my obligatory caveat of: we all have our own unique individual palates and our own desires in what we desire in a given beer style.

    Cheers!

Thanks to Secatogue Brewery for online ordering with delivery. This is the Electro-Lit Yellow. Very lemon forward, with quite a bit of carbonation (a little too much IMO). Tart finish like a slice of lemon meringue. Fun spring beer, and while not up to the level of the Cherry Emoji I had from them yesterday, I'm just glad to support my local brewery and enjoy their efforts.

Second and final pour today, Aleman's Mademan. This is the second local offering on my beer list for the day, and the preferred pour.

OK price point ($2.19), no can date but picked up within a day of drop from the distributor at Beer on the Wall last week. 8.2% ABV poured into a nonic.

Appearance: Darker brown pour, oof-white head leaves light soapy lacing in its wake. Medium carbonation lasts throughout the pour. 4.0

    Aroma:
Sweet melon hops aroma, nice malt bread back. Well balanced. 4.0

    Taste:
Mirrors aroma, nice malty bread tast leads, backed by fruity melon, pineapple and mango. Sweet, very interesting blend works well, a pleasurable pour. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Medium body, fizzy carbonation lingers throughout, light bitterness and lightly dry, clean crisp finish. 4.0

    Overall:
Another solid offering by Aleman! 4.25

I prefer an IPA/DIPA leaning on the bitter portion of the scale. This one leans sweet, but well balanced and complex, which resulted in a favorable enjoyment. Glad to have on offering to recommend to Beer Advocates today. Look forward to the remaining shared pours, and rejoining the thread next week for one or two "vintage" offerings.

    Cheers!

Thanks for the background on how this beer has evolved. While I might enjoy a Citra-hopped or dry hopped Pilsner, I too prefer a more traditional take on the style, especially when executed this well. One of many "straight forward" Pils-based lagers I've had the pleasure to enjoy recently, really, and if Tired Hands were local to me, it's the kind of beer I would love to have on draught!

I definitely can't identify specific Pilsner malt varieties (in the way I can identify specific hop varietals by taste and smell), so it's possible that some of the "less" pleasant tones I identify with Pilsner malt is more common with certain varieties. The last several have featured grassy, peppery notes, light cracker and honey, and a touch of pungency, but very little of what I would call "earthiness."

    Cheers, Jack!

Hello NBSers. This week I bought an experimental IPA made by Beer'd, a brewery I have a lot of respect for. This is part of their "Next Episode" series. I could not enter a review in the BA database because, although there are reviews in the db all the way up to Next Episode #16, this one is not numbered.
Side of the can says that the hops are Idaho 7 and Strata. Bottom of the can says 4/28/2020 "WE STILL DO EPISODES". No series number anywhere to be found.[IMG]
My aggressive pour, resulting in a spillover, did create a nice frothy white head. This head laced well for the entire session.
The aroma is... a little odd or maybe hard to identify. Kind of dank with burnt or over-ripe orange. Well, lets taste it. Not as wierd as the aroma but definitely dank. Also sweet, but it does finish dry.
Overall, not bad, I wouldn't refuse it, but I probably wouldn't buy it again given other options.

T: Similar to the nose, loads of fruits. Sweet pineapple, mango and orange as well as some pine with a nice bitter finish. 4.5/5
F: Good amount of carbonation with a nice creamy mouthfeel. 4.5/5
O: Fantastic NEIPA if you still like a nice hop bite. Commonweath make great IPAs and this is one of the best I've had from them. 4.5/5 for a BA generated 4.45/5

Very excited for both of the new beers I am presenting today! Honestly, I was having a pretty lousy day up until about two hours ago where I finally decided to get out of the house and go grocery shopping. I put the beers in the freezer so they'd be ready for when I got back.

Just gonna vent a bit first, before I get into this fantastic lager. Things have been a little odd lately... the lady I've been dating for the past two months decided in the middle of the week that she would like us to take a break, and we jointly decided upon two weeks with little-to-no contact (we work together so there is gonna be some moments we're forced to interact, but we're both professionals so it shouldn't be bad) to see if things can work themselves out. She has felt like we've moved a little too quickly, and we got in an argument last week that became a kinda heated. The discussion we had about the break and setting the ground rules made us both feel oddly at-ease, though, and she told me I didn't have to take the stuff I've had at her house for the past few weeks. I feel like it'll probably end up fine, and I'm glad we had an adult conversation about it, but I just hope we can pick up where we left off... I would not be keen on losing her over this situation, but I guess the future is uncertain right now.

Alright, here goes nothing; sorry about that, by the way. Let's keep on the subject of beer from now on!

Desítka is Notch's 10th anniversary pale lager and it is, according to the brewery, " as traditional as it gets in the Czech Republic; triple decoction, open fermentation, natural carbonation and lagered forever." It was made with floor malted Czech barley and Sladek hops. The pour is a beautiful semi-hazy golden color with a deep yellow/goldenrod hue to it if held to direct light. The head is fine and well-built, but doesn't last forever; it eventually peters out to a very thin ring held up by active, effervescent carbonation visible rising in distinct streams from the bottom of my glass.

The nose here is very clean and crackery with a focus on simple but evocative ingredients that bring out notes of apricot, nectarine, floral/herbal aspects, and light grapefruit undertones. I am expecting this to be a beautifully well-balanced lager experience right up there with some of the best American lagers I've had. Notch constantly improves on their game, and this seems so carefully developed that I have a hard time thinking I'll be let down at all.

First few sips are an amazing paradox... it's so crisp and drinkable, with subtle but evolving flavors of light florals, peach/nectarine, and a light breadiness, but I almost feel guilty for drinking it so quickly. The carbonation is superb and the feel is balanced between the maltiness I want in a beer like this and the slightly aggressive zippy hop elements. I'm surprised by how bitter this one is, but it feels perfectly spicy and well-made at the end of the day. Would gladly drink many more of these.

Cheers, and I'll be back soon with a very different beer... time to catch up on previous posts. :beers::beers:

taste is peach and fruity, hit of creamcycle sweetness, to me a bit thin given the strong fruit smell.
