To be fair to old nation, they make wondeful non-neipa beers in an array of styles but those don't move in packaged formats so they are only on tap at the brewery. They are very near my folks house so I stop.in whenever I visit family and I almost never get an IPA at their taproom and have always left quite pleased with their beer

This is what makes it so easy to skip stone these days. For a company that hitches it's marketing image heavily to the "only for the true beer lovers" kind of image they sure have shown no compunction about churning out whatever latest IPA trend they can in pursuit of the mass of casual beer drinkers at the expense of their interesting beers that were in under represented styles. Nothing wrong with trying to produce beers with broad appeal, but miss me with the arrogant beer snob marketing if you're just going to be another trend chasing IPA factory

Saranac, I used to drink a ton from them in my earlier craft beer days. The diversity of their portfolio was amazing then. I cant even think of the last time I bought any.

Chalk up another for Stone. The RIS and Old Guardian were regulars for me.

Victory is also something I used to buy a lot of with Old Horizontal and Storm King in regular rotation.

Final one to the list would be Brooklyn. I know the beers are still solid, I havent bought something from them in years, not for any particular reason. Black Chocolate Stout was also a mainstay.

May keep some of these in mind next beer store run.

To put it another way there’s a few breweries I used to see a lot of and enjoyed them but they aren’t around anymore.

    DuClaw
    Flying Dog
    Sixpoint.

I bought every single flying dog brew house rarity I could find. They were so creative and amazing. Same with DuClaw they seemed to just fall off the map. I used to be able to find them everywhere and if anybody can remember 2014-2015 I was very outspoken on Sixpoint and was given permission more than several times to announce their releases on this site before anyone knew otherwise. Very sadly I’ve lost contact and the other two breweries seem to not been in my area as much. There’s plenty of great beer around but those 3 are stuck in my memory.

Victory is a staple in Philly especially golden monkey. Arguably the most popular beer in the city even amongst non craft drinkers followed by sour monkey. I don’t have exact sales numbers but the word of mouth love is very real.

Before I moved to the DC area, my girlfriend lived in DC, so I would go out to Herndon when visiting her. I was a victim of the Type At Me Bro?! fiasco. Ever since, I've approached their beers with skepticism. Seeing confirmation from others as far as their inconsistency has only strengthened my skepticism, though I will have their beer on draft from time to time and I've had fewer misses. I'd say those good hop forward ales I had in those earlier days were excellent. I, like you, can't justify paying a premium for "I don't know what I'm going to get" beer. There are so many breweries and pretty much everyone is doing hops, I'd rather go with a brewery whose consistency I trust.

Have you tried Humble Abode (1620 E. Houston Ave)?
If so, interested in your opinion. I recently tried their De-Stress IPA (canned), and it was OK. Thinking if I manage to try some of their product on-tap, it might be a better overall experience.

What I've had from them I've liked, but I don't get up that way too often. I have not had that particular beer.

I have almost stopped buying imports because bottle codes are so far out. Otherwise, it's been a lot of personal taste change and again the fact that I've gotten (perceived) diminishing quality from a few breweries.

    Green Flash
    Drake's
    Bear Republic
    Ballast Point
    North Coast

    Amen!

The only imported beers that I do not worry about their old age are Belgian Ales such as Trappist/Abbey Ales. Those beer still taste good for my palate.

    Cheers!

@JackHorzempa I always check the Czechvar dates at my local BevMo, one of my favorites (aka Budvar in Europe).

I am simpatico here. I drank many ½ liter glasses of Budweiser Budvar at the U Medvídků Pub in Prague during my two week visit last year. Those beers were served from tanks at the Pub; nice and fresh!

    Cheers!

Single Cut. I don't often pay attention to pricing on decent beer, but these guys are on a whole other level with with their price levels in Connecticut.

Are you still in West Virginia? If you are...where on earth are you regularly finding Toppling Goliath?

As far as Three Floyds I still love them but I always thought Zombie Dust was overrated. Alpha King and Gumball headis where it's at. AK is one of my all time faves. And Robert the Bruce is a great Scotch Ale. Never had Dark Lord but I hope to try it someday.

Kinda makes sad to see so many dumping on Stone. I still love them for Arrogant Bastard alone if nothing else, but they've made a number of beers I've loved in recent years and Xocoveza is always great. Stone IPA is also still a really great old school WCIPA. I do agree with others about missing many of their old, discontinued brews though.

I'll add Ballast Point, Rogue and I gotta throw in Sam Adams. I probably stuck with Sam's a lot longer than some around here, partly because that's used to be just about the only craft you could find in WV, and then I hung on because I still enjoyed their seasonal packs. Until they started throwing Sam's 76 into everyone of them. Now I'm done with those too. The only Sam's I still buy now is I will usually get one of the 28 packs of Octoberfest they release through Sam's club every year. It's not the best Octo but it's consistent and cheap, esp in the 28 pack. Which is also the only 28 pack of beer I have ever seen.

The og pale ale was so good. Pale ale 2.0 is garbage.

As for me Lagunitas and crooked stave top the list. I used to drink a lot 9f new dog town, now I cant find it. It took a year after I reached out for someone to get back to me from their staff and it was to ask if my question was answered. As for crooked stave, I had a von pilsner recently 5hat was all DMS and an IPA that was pretty flat. Such is life.

The only brewery I can think of that I will not buy( if at a party and it’s the only choice I will drink) is Yuengling.

Look at my avatar and it might explain why. I grew up with it , it’s cheap and just ok. I still prefer a good AAL but was always good for 8-10 cases a year, especially the IPL.

At a gathering if it’s the only beer option I will drink it as it’s already been paid for and someone is going to drink it, I don’t feel I’m adding any $ to their pockets this way. I will not be putting my $ out ever again to this brewery.

    Enjoy
