Correction: Follow-up research shows Hirschau is no serving Löwenbräu. I wonder if that means they had to take down the nice, vintage Hohlwein Spaten poster? And what did they do with it?

Here's a question I've had and I'm guessing someone here will know the answer...

Alt-Bamberg. Beers under that name are listed as being from Kaiserdom here and elsewhere. Is that what the normal Kaiserdom beers are sold as locally, or are the styles they share totally unique? Is it simply a brand they brew/sell or something else entirely? I've never actually seen a Kaiserdom bottle in the wild.

Their website has a unique story (http://www.alt-bamberg.com) that doesn't line-up with Kaiserdom's much. What's the story behind that brand exactly?

Sounds like a question for @herrburgess

Kaiserdom used to be imported by Merchant du Vin in the 1980s. Their Rauchbier was the first I ever tried and it was pretty awful -- tainted my perception for a long time and nearly kept me from visiting Bamberg. I was glad when I learned they weren't typical.

I've found this on the subject, hopefully it will make sense after running it through an online translator because it's actually a little confusing. The gist of it is that Kaiserdom has a very bad reputation in Bamberg and that is why they are selling their "premium line" under the brand name of Alt-Bamberg there instead.

used to see them all the time. the alt bamberg branding was coming around just as I was leaving. but there were still tons of kaiserdom bottles on shelves

Good to know! I've seen Bürgerbräu bottles before and wasn't aware that was them, too. I've never had anything from Kaiserdom before, so I don't really have a reference point for how good or bad they might be. My wife and I planned to visit them last summer, but we both got sick of walking and ended up at the Kronprinz instead. It just far enough to be legitimately inconvenient.

FWIW @Domingo the name Bürgerbräu is not protected by trademark laws and there have been many beers marketed from various breweries under that name.

Servus! Tonight I’m drinking Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel

It’s rich and delicious, if somewhat muted with age. Still not too much oxidation. Wish I could get these by the case!

    Prost!

Yup. Unfortunately that is too often the case with imported German beers.:slight_frown:

    Non-cheers!

Ask the retailer, he gets them by the case. He could order an extra and not break it down for you.

Just curious, how old is it?

I’m not sure, Ayinger’s date codes are unreadable. It seems like it could’ve been up to 8 months. Still, the store took good care of the bottles and left them in the cold fridge instead of on the shelf.

Was there a code on the back that started with an 'L'? If so, can you share it? Their code starts out with the letter 'L' followed by four digits. The first is the year, and the next three is the day of the year.

Yup, thanks to their julian dating, Ayinger are actually one of the very few traditional German breweries that have a clear bottling date on their beers.

My bottles say L0010. Made fairly early in the year then, so the tenth day of 2020? In that case, it is surprisingly fresh.

Yup, bottled on 01/10/20 then. Not sure if I would call almost 6 months old "fresh", but it's not too bad, I guess.

It is for imports over here.

Hence the operative term “surprisingly.” I’d prefer fresher of course, but this isn’t bad for imports.
