A very good question. And I agree on the "look at my murky slurry IPA. It's quad hopped, but none in the boil using our house yeast." homebrewer profile. Should poll them to see who can explain what decoction means.

Armando DeDona at Long Live has at least some beer education and he brews the haziest of haze. His cask stuff is also awesome but it is definitely new age. I had an IPA old fashioned once. It was incredible.

"Armando honed his brewing skills over the many years as a home brewer. To get legit, Armando studied commercial beer-making and traditional cask-conditioning in the U.K., and continues to stay in-tune with the latest in the scene."

I know it is only one example and totally anecdotal but I like to mention Long Live whenever I can.

I don't think this is very difficult to figure out.

The vast majority of new brewers in the last, say 5 years, are brewing New England IPAs.

Just go to your local liquor stores. How many brewers are doing lagers, and how many are authentic? And how many of those are good?

And if more brewers are now doing lagers, they most likely started off with mostly New England IPAs.

If I want an authentic Czech pale lager for example, I'm going to go to...Notch...Schilling....um?

If I want some authentic German styles there's more, but it's still not the vast majority.

And don't even get me started on all the breweries just slapping the term "Czech Pilsner" on something that in no way resembles a Czech Pale Lager.

Driving to Schilling tomorrow for the first time. Have a bachelor party in North Conway, but making an extra loop up north. Looking forward to some pizza and lagers by the river.

No judgement, just curiosity...but how’s a bachelor party during Covid going to work?

Also, kind of funny, this reminds me of my one and only trip to Hill Farmstead. Picked up beers and a couple samples at Hill, and then went to Parker Pie for more HF on tap plus pizza. This was also a detour on a bachelor party on the way up to Montreal.

Everyone was asked to quarantine the best they could this week. 10 guys drinking beer and eating BBQ at a rental house is fairly controlled. Best we could do and didn’t want to lose a chance to fete a good friend.

Agree, but that said, kuddos to those at least making the effort to brew them. And most of them are pretty decent drinking beers, even if they're not great stylistic examples of their namesake.

I hear ya. At the end of the day I agree with you, but some of them are so bad I never buy them again. And it just shows a lack of effort towards figuring out how to brew one properly.

And STILL there are few that are as good as the imports. The imports unfortunately are laughably old around here, despite the fact they do hold up quite well.

I still think the imported Oktoberfests are better than any US brewed versions, although some do get close. And the imports come in fresh...in July/August.

I really wish this was available in cans or crowlers for curbside pick-up. :sob:

Rooted in biscuit(y) malt complexes with light graham cracker awareness, and rigid bitterness…Recent rendition (7/28) has an earthy, floral, spiced hop backing to mellow peach and coiled grapefruit = Smooth execution on soft rural grains with an accustomed dry, clean acuity…2021 for side pull gratification is itching

Have you been to Moonlight? If so, did you have their Reality Czech, and how does it compare to Notch’s offerings?

Desítka is softer, smoother, and calmer with extensive distance in the malt workings. It’s a calculated representation with an impressively historic, studied feel

Reality Czeck is clear-cut, self-evident, and one of the few to seek out stateside…A sure necessity: It’s quieter on malt existence, but brighter, sharper, and edgier in presentation

    …both are technically sound

Moonlight lagers aren’t decocted I don’t think. Could be wrong but pretty sure they’re system is just single infusion. Great beers nonetheless.

    Interesting. Thanks for the insight.

Sounds like Reality Czech leans more South German.

Went yesterday. Dunkel Weiss is mind blowingly good.

Got a mixed case for 60 dollars. Can't beat that.
