I've met a lot of BAs around Chicago, they are some of the biggest turd burglars I've ever met.

It's all geography.....but some of us/them are a bunch of dicks. Just look at the pictures of the bottle grabs and quarrels at WLV on Saturday. One guy I talked too who never tasted a cantillon managed to grab a fou foune, classic, kriek and Lou pepe because he heard good things and they have high trade value. That kinda sucks but while that nonsense was going on, 50 cool folks were sharing the rarest of rare beer in the back and at the bar. It's like life....80% cool, 20% shitbirds but sometimes u only notice the shitbirds. If you haven't noticed the Great Lakes forum is the most popular regional forum so we're/they're also a bigger group so the 20% shit larvae can shine.

    ((Nice shit analogy Ricky))

I have not noticed this, but maybe I'm not paying attention. I guess you get some big city swagger from time to time, but that's to be expected. Besides, I used to live part time in Chicago so I know what it's like(would need a enormous salary to go back), but most of the people I know from there are fine folks.

I love those assholes in Chicago! Some of my favorite beer traders are from Chicago.

Well, I'm from Chicago, and I would probably qualify as "a lurker" but I hope that doesn't put me in the "bad egg" category. To be honest, the wealth of knowledge about tasting beer, brewing beer, and knowing the people in the beer world on here can be a bit intimidating. I'm not sure how much I have to add other than a little quip here and there. I lurk more just to keep up and to be entertained with beer as the backdrop.

Anyway... hey. What's up. High five?

It seems like everyone has a "cellar" now a days. And nobody is happy with just one of something, they want extra to stick in their cellar and not drink, so they can trade it for other beers they'll put in their cellar and not drink. This isn't just a Chicago thing, but something I've noticed exploding over the years. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse on that point.

I'm out in the Western burbs and haven't met a lot of other Chicago BAs except for lines I've been in, most recently Map Room 20th and black Friday at South Loop Binny's. But everyone I've talked to has been very nice and knowledgeable.

There are a lot of pompous, monied idiots in Chicago and they have all recently begun enjoying beer and that has drove up prices and made it harder for the rest of us to find beer. This isn't to say that everyone is Chicago is bad or that there aren't any great BA's there, but the Chicago beer scene has really expedited the gentrification of the entire midwest's beer scene, and that has engendered a lot of understandable anger.

Personally, I'm strange. I enjoy things that, like me, are dirty and strange. I've only been in to craft beer since 04, but in those 8.5 years I've seen the community change from a handful of straggly derelicts enjoying a surprisingly inexpensive hobby to a bizarre, pricey, and self-infatuated ritual meant to demarcate Caucasian social status. This has been unsettling. And I blame Chicago for it having happened.

Perhaps everyone who hates what the craft beer community has become should move on to craft teas. There aren't too many pompous, moneyed idiots in Chicago in that scene driving up prices and making it harder for the rest of you to find teas. Not yet, anyway. Maybe in 8.5 years, though...

I remember when those damned asians gentrified our midwest tea scene, what was that 3500 years ago?

This isn't new and isn't unique to the beer scene. Rich Chicagoans have been doing the same to lake properties in Wisconsin for years much to the chagrin of the locals. The acronym FIB was coined a long time ago and likely had nothing to do with beer releases.

Nine page thread about WI feelings about IL: http://www.city-data.com/forum/wisconsin/14113-why-strong-hatred-towards-illinois.html

Just stating the facts, not my personal feelings towards anyone - I like anyone who isn't an asshole regardless where they come from.

Rural Northern area disliking more Urban / Suburban location to the South = happens everywhere.

We Mainers refer to MA people as "Massholes", hate their driving, buying up water-front property and so on.
"Keep New Jersey out of Maine"... I could go on forever. Point is that phenomenon isn't anything new or specific to the MidWest.

I'm not "from" Chicago and would never claim to be but I have been drinking Craft Beer since 1997 and find the current environment, interesting, shall we say.

For sake of being long-winded I'll leave it at this: Craft Beer is the "hot thing" right now and as such there is a lot of bullshit one has to tolerate. The only reassuring thing is that everything gets 15 minutes of fame (though oddly this is Craft Beers second-round of 15 mins.) and, one can hope, things will level-out and get back to a more normal state. What's more the bullshit is easy to tolerate if you ignore it.
I've been to some rare beer releases that I didn't enjoy and as such have stopped going, problem solved.
Same with Breweries who seem to be too cool for my money, I don't buy their beer, problem solved.

Chicago's a great city but as the population increases so does the number of dipshits... just a mathematical reality.
