I had nearly forgotten about the Black Lager, that was a wonderful beer!

There is a bar in my apartment building that used to get the Sam Adams mixed packs, including the Fall pack, and the Black Lager was the first beer to sell out. Sadly, the Spruce Beer was the last to finally go, months later.

Thumbs up on the Boston Ale. I like it better than the lager yet, sadly, I haven't seen it distribution in Colorado for ages...their web site still lists it under their Brewmasters Collection...

No kidding! I shelled out $300.00 for a bottle last Nov. It was worth it. Still have about 18 oz. left.

I find it strange how many people like this particular beer but it’s nowhere to be found. The other crap is everywhere.

Call me a cynic, c'mon do it!

If every BA regularly purchased the beers they post they like the breweries would indeed make these beers regularly.

This had been discussed plenty on multiple BA threads in the context of Sierra Nevada Stout & Porter. People claim they want these beers but when Sierra Nevada makes their irregular drops of these beers they just 'sit' for months.

Like the old saying goes: actions (money) speaks louder than words.

    Cheers!

You're saying that you don't get Boston Lager in NC??

One place in the ATL burbs has Boston Ale regularly. I buy it quite often.

And if I was a betting man I would say this is a supporting reason why you can find this beer. In other places people 'say' they want Sam Adams Boston Ale but if they do not purchase this beer frequently it is not available to them.

Cheers to you for putting your money where your mouth is!

Their imperial series was a bit jazzy for me. If they’d throw some of those in a variety pack, winner!

I haven’t seen this beer here in as long as I’ve lived in NC, so since the mid 90s. I bought it quite a bit when I lived in PA though. I always felt their lager is a tad to sweet for me now, in the 80s my palate was quite different though and thought it very bitter compared to beers like Miller etc.

I find that SABL with a few months on it has a notable caramel (which is sweet) aspect to it. I have been told that a very fresh SABL is different with the hop flavors being prominent and the caramel more in the background. I have never found a super fresh SABL so I have no personal experience here.

    Cheers!

I don’t buy it so I have no age info, but I’m doubting it’s a high turning beer most place except perhaps at some grocery stores. I find many amber lagers to follow that sweetish trend, they call it a deep malt backbone, but my palette disagrees. Same with beers like Ayinger, a truly beautiful pour, just too sweet for me.

For years I've really enjoyed the seasonal mix packs that Sam has put out, and I've even defended the universal inclusion of Boston Lager, but dammit, I am disappointed in the now-universal inclusion of Sam 76. Now that's two spots taken up by year-round offerings when they could be giving us something more special.

I’ve bought it when I lived in New Hampshire, getting on draft at a local restaurant under a private label, and out of 12 pack cases from a bottle shop. The beer finder on their site doesn’t indicate anywhere even close to DC which sells it, which is a bummer. Otherwise, I would buy it more often.
