went into self-titled expecting it to be very sweet. this beer takes very sweet to a completely new level. the cinnamon is nice but its all just too much. don't know why they thought chocolate would improve anything here. couldn't drink more than ~5oz. i regret buying two bottles.

followed this all up with a can of mike solo. loved every bit of it.

I picked up my bottle today and their was a 10-15 person wait for draft. With the release and the food truck, they were busier than I thought. So I didn’t get to try it or Blender like I planned. I did grab a Poetic Hustler 4 pack to see if I can taste any difference after he mentioned the Nelson sourcing for this one. As far as Self-Titled goes, I hate having 750’s of beer I’m scared to open alone lol

almost grabbed blender but i was already invested in EC today. poetic hustler is always a good one.

wait to share. i split the bottle with one other person and we still didnt finish it. ended up corking it for my buddy to finish tonight.

I grabbed 2 bottles of Self Titled today, along with Poetic Hustler (one of my favorites) and In a Blender. I have an enormous sweet tooth, so I think I'll be OK with the sweetness on this one, but I'm a little worried.

Buddy had that over the weekend. He's a bigger fan of Mikerphone than I am and frequents the brewery due to his proximity. We've shared a 608 Da Beetus before and I thought that was the most ungodly sweet beer or sweet anything I've ever tasted that resulted in a drain pour. He commented that Self-Titled was sweeter than that and he couldn't finish the draft. Just pop some sugar cubes if that's the case. They'll taste a lot better.

First time someone mentioned 30% maple syrup I thought they were joking. Does someone have a link to the description for that? That's mind boggling....

original post on brew-day mentioned it was 45% maple.

a more recent post said it ended up being 30%.

i love most of what mikerphone does and i think they have one of the nicest taprooms in the area. beer was a mistake though. i cant imagine any of the brewers being thrilled with how it turned out.

I was really hoping that the barrel character would cut some of the sweetness by adding a tannic note, so I purchased a bottle. There is absolutely zero barrel in this beer, making it cloyingly sweet, and difficult to finish more than a few sips. I love maple in BA stouts, but this one was not executed well.

I assumed that the 30% maple was before fermentation, and that it was intended so that a lot of the sugar from the maple would get eaten up by the yeast. Maybe that didn't happen as planned, or maybe I just misunderstood.

Did anyone here try Mikerphone's draft-only "fresh maple" ISLBS variant? That stuff was nuts. It's the only beer in my life that I thought was too sweet to drink.

Looks like Mike's daughter picked bubble gum for her birthday beer this year. More specifically, it seems like they are going to use Big League Chew, unless that was just for the pics. Here's the post:

I like her Willy Wonka label, which is probably the best thing I'll like about the beer. I'll probably try it on tap, since he's releasing the BA Snap, Crackle, Pop at the same time. That's going to be one huge sugar spike, so I'll have the insulin shot ready.

As an aside, one of the questions in the interview is:

I realize this is taken out of context, but he means her favorite conceptually, right? To be 100% clear, that's rhetorical and me being a dick...I'm in no way accusing him of being a bad parent. Just pointing out that it reads funny.

I've heard people report the flavor of bubble gum in beers (I guess, probably most frequently in belgians, like dubbel's, trippels, and hefe's), but...In an IPA? I dunno, seems wierd, but I also haven't had many (ok, 1?) milkshake IPA, so I'm probably not the best judge. Just sounds...like a flavor I don't want in that style of beer. At all.

does that note come from the yeast when it’s an accident? I remember a Special Sauce that gave me that flavor once

Poop. I just got home and probably missed it by 2 minutes.

Ah well, it'll be on tap so I'll still get to try it.
