To be quite frank with you I didn't catch the reference originally but now I remember this is the guy who wasn't allowed to get his bottle because he was caught selling it on the secondary market

Thanks for the heads up. It turns out, I ended up being full with errands for my father today (he had a knee replaced on Monday). I wasn't available to assist my friend with this, but it looks like it's still available, so I assume they had no issues (haven't heard anything all day, but I was incomunicado, so..)

    Appreciate it.

How do Sulla Terra and Anabasis compare? Haven't been fortunate enough to try either so don't have a frame of reference.

last ST blend utilized a blend of bourbon and maple bourbon barrels. it’s also a different recipe(s). ST was damn good. maybe not as hefty of mouthfeel as anabasis (full disclosure: anabasis b4 is one of my favorite pours of 2020).

Echoing Luscious, both great beers, but Anabasis is on another level.

Despite having maple barrel involvement, Sulla translates as more traditional, and brings to mind classics like Thomas Hardy's.

Anabasis is that new school, ultra thick, yet also heavily barrel influenced bw.

Could get further into the differences, and they also have overlap, but I think those are the primary departures for me. Just my personal experience.

What’s an example of this? Does BCBBW (pre 15 or post) qualify? I may not have had a “new style,” so i am curious.

I think Perennials Blue Ridge was very much in the same style. Very dark. Almost stout like in some ways. I strongly prefer Anabasis though

Breweries weren't really making stuff like this until the past 5 years, max? All these ultra viscous, almost gloppy modern brews I think of outside of SP/Perennial stouts and barleywines (to @AlexIrigoyen 's point, I loved Blue Ridge) would be from breweries like Angry Chair, J. Wakefield, and Toppling Goliath for example. Younger, less widely known breweries like Ingenious are consistently putting out similarly bodied stouts lately as well. (And @Luscious_Malfoy I agree Hand of Glory was fairly viscous, but I don't think Holy Mountain is consistently putting out hugely thick brews as a trademark like SP, AC, TG...)

Although some GI bottles have definitely gotten close, I don't usually think of anything by them as absurdly thick or viscous like I do Derivations, Anabasis, even Shared's CSV. But that's not a bad thing either. Even Dark Lord has a lighter body, relatively speaking, despite it being known as such a sweet brew.

For me it's a pretty small population of breweries that are making brews so damn thick. Other breweries venerated for barrel aging don't typically aim for that type of viscosity. I'm thinking Cigar City, Goose Island, Firestone Walker, Bruery, Alesmith, Revolution, Bottle Logic, Hill Farmstead, Jackie O's. You get the idea. Although, BL has done one or two recently that stood out from their usual, like Hypermash, but that was laid out explicitly as the point, and I'm not sure I favor it over the rest of their catalog, although I did love it.

Personally, Cigar City, Revolution and Bottle Logic hit my sweet spot for barleywine, particularly the barrel character they develop and the mouthfeel they achieve are both Goldilocks for me.

Thanks, Guys. Hope to try Anabasis some day. I think I favor BA stouts more than BA BWs, but I think that’s because a top tier BA Stout is easier to come by. I always save BA BWs for really special occasions or a bad day, and i think they hit way more of that “sweet spot” for me than stouts. Course, maybe that’s just influenced by how few top tier ones there are relative to stouts. Either way, hope to try Anabasis someday.

    Thanks.

good point on Revolution @Sabtos - i’ve been able to buy Straight Jacket through distro in Central IL the last two years and it is so good but doesn’t have the mouthfeel that Anabasis has (not does VSOJ for that matter even though it’s one of the best BWs i’ve ever had). on another Rev note, Ryeway is an incredible beer too and kind of BW-esque.

i’m yet to try a BW from BL or AC. will have to check into that.

I would add Fremont to that list of strong barrel character without being too thick. Usually the big bottles have to be saved for a share but I can drink a 22oz Fremont bottle solo no problem.

    Hell yes, Ryeway is golden.

And BL's Arcane Rituals is one of my favorites of all time.

I knew I'd miss one, Fremont is a good one at that, I'm with ya.

Thanks for the commentary and good, helpful views overall. Haven't had a bw of this type before and admittedly haven't had a bw blow me away before. Hoping to try one of these at some point!

Wonder if anyone can compare anabasis to 8th state neck and neck b2?

I'm not a huge BW guy but liked b1 and really enjoyed b2
