Ah, someone just posted a picture of a beer aisle from 1994, and what struck me was how classy the labels were. You definitely wouldn't have a problem figuring out the style and name on the bottles.

Can you post a link to the post with that pic?

Same, I'm not going to pick up the beer and search the label to find the style. I find the biggest offenders to be the newer breweries that exclusively use the 16oz 4-pack format. That format has me pass over beers also, 90% of the time it's either a hazy IPA or fruited lactose sour.

I had an older HT recently and it was not very good, I think it was somewhere around 6 months. SN beers hold up significantly better.

I just wish I could find some pics of local joints and their selections. No doubt, I passed a few during my childhood trips to the groceries (mid to late nighties, early two thousands)

I like the Anchor plopped right in the middle -- and the two (different) Hubers.

I think I checked once against the BATF's 1976 list of brewers, and every one is represented except Yuengling and Eastern Brewing Corp. (I guess they either didn't give their permission or didn't buy O-I bottles?)

    For Yuengling around that period:

I thought I was the only one annoyed by this. Calling it a “pour” always sounded awkward to me.

The other one that always gets me is, “How’s it drinking?” It feels unnatural for me to ask it like that.

Yes I do, I hate to pound out the carbonation, if I want a nose I’ll stick it in the can.

I’d be willing to bet the NEIPAS age poorly, I can see them turning quickly because the natural ipa bitterness is already light.i hate when IPAs turn to the malt forward side, you can smell it before you taste it.

I agree with you here: NEIPAs are not stable beers and are best consumed very, very fresh.

For completeness (for others): I do not consider Heady Topper to be a NEIPA.

    Cheers!

I noticed the Yuengling Porter in that "microbrewery" poster from @thesherrybomber 's post. Was it considered part of that club in the 90s?

Thanks for the follow up. That Brooklyn Lager really stands out. In my eyes, that work from Milton Glaser is on another level when compared to most graphic choices in the beer world... and yet pretty much nobody here will mention something (even remotely) like that in a "favorite labels" thread. @steveh

To be honest, I didn't know (or remember) that was a Glaser design, but it caught my eye because I didn't realize it has been around this long.

Don't forget, I'm in Randy Mosher's backyard -- I often get blinded by his recognizable style and all others fade to gray.

There's an Anchor Liberty near the middle of the other poster too. Their presence really highlights how frozen in time those beers look - and I mean that in the best way. That Jim Stitt work is a little bit of treasure on today's beer shelf. Makes me want to go buy some in support of continuing that longevity even though I've pretty much given up on buying Anchor. I like these things sticking around and rules are made to be broken - I'll have to give them a look once we're out of Oktoberfest season.

The Ballard Bitter is in there too, that was always the sort of style the fit beer to me.
See, I always thought a good trademark or logo was supposed to have longevity -- not change up on the whim of someone in the front office with no marketing knowledge. People stop recognizing your brand and look to something else.
