Well.... it's brings up the same question in response as it often does still today:
    "By whom?"

I mean, I wouldn't have (nor would the Association of Brewers I'd guess but I'd have to check) but I imagine some did. Same goes for the DIXIE, the BLACKENED VOODOO, the STONEY'S and that BRUIN PALE ALE ([EDIT] which was a Hudepohl-Schoenling brand) Not sure about that SARANAC, either - where F X Matt stood; the beer itself, "Season's Best", existed as a Matt product before they created the Saranac brand.

I'm sure it has been brought up before but the incorrect use of the word adjunct to refer to non-fermentable flavorings makes me go nuts.

    |Blackened Voodoo was (is) a brand of Dixie. I hate to question the expert here, but why would Dixie not have been classified a Microbrewery at the time of the poster?
They were bought from a corporation by an individual (husband and wife, technically) in the mid-80s, and owned by them until just a couple years ago. (they are still minority owners.) They did go through bankrupcy in the late 80s, emerged, then contract brewed for some time after Katrina destroyed the original brewery.

I just used that word in the Black is Beautiful thread, but I used it as an 'adjunct' to the word flavoring. :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol, well, you shall be forgiven. I was just watching a documentary about the evolution of the english language and how many words have acquired different meanings over time (even if they were technically incorrect). Their widespread use made them "become" correct. Maybe the word adjunct will evolve to actually mean "any" ingredient other than malt, hops, yeast or water.

    Well, again: "By whom?"

A "microbrewery" in the 1980s and 1990s was usually defined by the industry (including the forerunner of the Brewers Association, the Institute for Brewing Studies' Assoc. of Brewers) as a brewery with a yearly barrelage of 10,000, 12,000 and finally 15,000 bbl. or less*.
*and still today, for that matter.

And a "craft" brewery, at the time called a "Specialty brewery" by the AoB, was one that "produced an "all-malt" or "specialty"-style beer for their flagship brand". Dixie's barrelage in the 1980s and 1990s dropped pretty dramatically through that period (1980 = 140k, 1999 = 25k) and was even below 15k for some years in the 1990s** but it was clearly just a down-on-its-luck regional brewery (w/capacity of 200-300k bbl/yr) rather than what was understood as a "microbrewery" at the time. And, of course, the flagship Dixie Beer was an adjunct lager (something the B.A. didn't consider "craft" until 2014).

For example, the IBS/AoB's 1996-97 BREWERS RESOURCE DIRECTORY listed Dixie as a "Regional brewery"- same as other "old-line" pre-craft breweries like Yuengling, Straub, Schell, The Lion, Hudepohl-Schoenling, etc.

** Yeah, I knew BV was a Dixie brand (doesn't everybody ) - when I was in New Orleans and vicinity in the mid-1990s I was shocked at how little Dixie beer I could find but I did have a Blackened Voodoo bought at the Oak Alley plantation gift shop:grin:

Another one of those Beer Bottle posters, a bit later than the previous one I guess (©1998) with a bunch of imports - even an AB product. (And two more Dixie-brewed beers, too ).

As someone who is always trying to learn more about why I like something (especially some IPAs but not others) as opposed to just the fact that i like it or not, I REALLY wish brewers would put ALL the following on the label in addition to ABV: IBU, hop varieties, and calories. Ya, I know these descriptors don't tell the whole story but IMO it sure helps in the selection process when I am faced with a shelf full of 10-20 IPAs. I have already noticed some correlation between how much I like an IPA and the specifics of the hop mix.
Second pet peeve is beers whose label states 'keep chilled" stocked on a room temperature shelf by a merchant.

So, how man breweries had a brand called "Old German"? The last one I recall seeing was made by- I think- Pittsburgh Brewing in the mid-2000s, which may be the same one as on this poster. Got an empty can somewhere in the attic. Your Yuengling post also shows one.

nc41's post reminded me of the beer stores in my town who do not pay attention to stock or deliberately leave old stock on the shelf until it is sold. Recently, I almost bought a case of Paulaner until I remembered to check the date, which was 1.5+ years past due. Really? Of course I left it on the shelf. This store has done this so many times. I had not been in there for over a year because of that practice and will not venture in again for a long time. What I want to know is . . . why do these store owners leave this on the shelf at the same price instead of putting it on sale like produce that goes bad so they can move it? Would someone please enlighten me?

    Dinkel Acker CD-Pils? :slight_frown: sniff.

Why is Beck's Dark in there twice? Someone not paying attention to labels?

I just picked up a couple of 500ml cans for like $1.50 each, so it's still around.

Not that version -- that was when Spaten brewed it for DA for export. Was a different beer than what's coming over now.

I tried the new stuff when it first hit shelves, then a couple years later -- just not as good. Local store used to keep 12-packs for $10 and that was my "house" beer back in the late 90s. Really miss it; great melanoidin malt flavor with a great hit of Nobel hops.

"If one of those bottles should happen to fall..." I believe an alternate version of the song went.

(Hopefully that little bit doesn't turn into an ear-worm. There's some damn commercial that's playing a lot lately with a female singer performing Willie's On the Road Again and damn...)

Yeah I noticed that, too, after I scanned it. Even if they were short a bottle, they could have spaced the two Beck's Dark's out a bit better.

Ha! I've wondered the same thing... and even have a jpeg ready with some (but nowhere near "all") of 'em.

    Some reference sources list dozens.

There was a period when at least two of them could be found on the same store shelves (the bottom shelves) in NJ in the mid-70s - Yuengling's and Eastern ('dba' Colonial) Brewing Corp's. Pretty sure those two existed at the same time as Peter Hand's and Pittsburgh's with the famous mascot, Herman, but whether they were sold in the region, I don't know.

Pittsburgh's (bottom row, #2) had previously been a product of the Queen City Brewing Co., Cumberland, MD - I swear I once read about a lawsuit over the name involving that brewery and another - "Good luck with that! Hope you've got a law firm willing to be paid in beer!" - but never found it again.

Oh, it's definitely not at its glory days level. But it still packs a nice punch, especially for the price.

Really liking the old pictures of craft beers from the past. Anyways... back to the topic of the post.
Coasters. I f#!king hate coasters. Oh give me some advertisement bullshit under my beer glass full of condensation so that when I pick up my glass the coaster comes up with it then drops and rolls away. I don't give a shit about your properly sealed bar/table surface that is not going to stain from my beer. And while we're at it, WTF is with a cocktail napkins under a beer?

It’s either intentionally done or they’re supremely lazy. Either way, I find a new beer store.

I was thinking that the name is specific enough to be proprietary, but apparently not. Good thing they weren't using the totally unique word "stone" in some fashion.

More power to you if you like it, but it only made me sad to think of those glory days.

Thanks AB-InBev (or whatever incarnation they were when they closed Spaten's door to DA).
